I'm Mike McGuire with the country music group 'Shenandoah'. I've been a HUGE Gordon Lightfoot since I was in high school and have always wanted to see him perform. I used to be married to Teresa Blake, an actress on the soap opra 'All My Children' and we lived in NYC back in 1994. I was SO excited to find out Gordon was playing at Radio City Music Hall that year and couldn't wait to FINALLY get to see him. But as fate would have it, we had an unexpected concert get booked and I missed him. My ONE chance to see him. If he ever gets down Nashville way, someone PLEASE let me know. Everyone has one thing in their life they'd like to do before they die...seeing Gordon Lightfoot has always been one of those things for me...to personally hear 'If You Could Read My Mind' and the Good Lord can go ahead and call me home. God bless you Gordon!

I have been a fan of GL since around 1967, when my brother brought back an LP from Toronto where he had worked for a year. I think I have every album 9 apart form some obscure compilations!! )that your man has recorded. The sad fact is that I have never seen him live!!
I will possibly be over in Kitchener, Ontario next August, some time between 6th and 10th 9 but it is a bit flexible) anyone know if GL will be performing in the area about that time?
As a postscript, have any of you heard a great Irish singer sonwriter called Christy Moore? he has been around since the late 60's and sings nad writes somre fabulous stuff. have a look at his site, christymoore.com there are downloads that you can listen to.
have a great Christmas all of you

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald has to be one of the best Ballads ever put to music. You can think of Johnny Cash music and songs by people like Johnny Horton with Big John and the Battle of New Orleans but the wreck of the Fitz sends shivers down your spine and Gordon Lightfoot tells the story in a way that makes you think you were right there when it happened! This song runs over 6 minutes to boot and was written in just 3 days? A great piece of work indeed!
Lightfoot's voice is so deep however that you have to find the words to his songs somewhere like here on the net to fully understand what he says on some songs.
I like Carefree Highway too and The Circle Is Small is a nice tune...!

Memories of a young boy fresh off a 50's steamer from Southampton, England who along with my parents and my young sister journeyed to Jasper, Alberta, Canada in the early 70's with the sound of "If You Could Read my Mind" playing on the CBC AM Radio.
A memory that will last my lifetime.
There is no town or place on Planet Earth like Jasper and there is no Canadian singer alive today the equal of Gordon Lightfoot.

Hi all, I 've just heard my first song by Gordon Lightfoot in the film The Brown Bunny by Vincent Gallo. I listen to it about 20 times before writing down the lyrics and finding out the songwriters name at the end credits, I can honestly say it the best love song I've heard as it expresses many of my own feeling. I'm 29 years old and after reading this website I recall hearing 'If you could read my mind' and 'Me and Bobby Mcgee' before without being aware of the songwriters name. So great website very informative. Now heres a question, What album should I buy first??

Saw Gordon at the Xanadu Theatre at the Taj Majal in Atlantic City on the 28th of October...this was my second show in the last several months...I took my Son and his girlfriend whom I introduced to Gordons music several years ago...once they heard "If you could read my mind", they were hooked..(they are both in their 30s)...as usual, he was flawless...the band right there when they were supposed to be...this is an incredible group of musicians...I can say this with some certainy
being a professional musician myself for over 30 years...Gordon sang most of his well known songs and some from many years back with the same wonderful delivery he is known for...I had to get my Son to a Gordon Lightfoot concert before he retired...after AC was a show in New York and then to Orillia Canada where Gordon is from for his final farewell...he is retireing after the Canada show to a much deserved rest...(a man 67 years old on the road doing one-nighters deserves a lot of credit)...the show was wonderful Gordon and you will be missed greatly...thank you and your band for so many years of wonderful music...enjoy your retirement which you so richly deserve...you are the greatest singer/songwriter
God ever put on this earth...Ed Leicht, Baltimore, Md.

My mother was a big fan and growing up I heard more Gordon Lightfoot than anything young American should be forced to hear. I simply couldn't stand to listen to any more his inceasent and mumbling crooning. That was until I was in a store one day several years back, and heard "If You Could Read My Mind" playing over the PA. I instantly recognized the tune (as his music was the brunt of many jokes and drunken singalongs between my older brother and me for years - cotton jenny was a big one.) It sounded different - it was the same tune I remembered from my childhood - only this time, i liked it. I immediately raided my mother's tape cabinet and listen to more Gordon Lightfoot than any 20 year old American should listen to, and I feel in love with all of it. Thanks Mom, and Thanks Gord - keep on yearnin'!

to say the least. His album "Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot" is incredible!High energy, great instrumental treatments- I here that Gord approves! The Tony Rice unit also does a ton of Lightfoot(with Cris Hillman from The Byrds on
Mandolin). If you want to get the total Lightfoot experience,I strongly suggest listening to Rice's
picking and strumming techniques. -Robby Lake

I keep on thinking, seriously, that I should go up to Canada and try to make a living just playing Lightfoot tunes. They're so worthy of immediate attention and I believe I could keep that tourch burning;so-to-speak.Anyway,gotta go cut the lawn.
Hey,that's a pretty large spectrum of different material that you've been covering leaving me quite curious.Try to get back to me soon.Keep on pressin' on!

Dear Robbie, I myself have never seen Gordon in concert, although I've been to the Maritime Sailors Cathedral in Belle Isle. :) I'm from Warren, Michigan originally. My brother saw Gordon play in Savannah once and I could have killed him for not getting me a ticket!
My band has just broken up and I've been getting through this by playing GL tunes and trying to improve my guitar and vocal skills. I wish I had someone to help me with my pick-strumming techniques as I'm used to playing with my fingers.
I've been playing current stuff like System of a Down, Godsmack, Staind, 3Doors Down, etc. I know alot of classic rock tunes from previous bands. Been playing bass for about 15 years and guitar / keyboards mostly just for fun and composing purposes.
I have a Fender Strat(Mexican) and a Samick six string electric/acoustic. My 12-string is a Yamaha. My bass collection is quite large.
I'm just going to keep on learning more GL tunes and have some fun.. his music is really inspiring and I love it. Looking forward to seeing your photos. Gordon Lightfoot rocks!!!

Mary,
That's totally cool.I had Gordo and Terry sign my 12-string at a concert and was tickled pink.
Unfortunatly,a psycho ex-girlfriend bashed it in and made it unplayable. So now I just have a cut away acoustic six string and an electric strat. copy.Right now I'm just playing the electric when I play out in clubs.
I wish that I could get a Lightfoot tribute band together but I don't know anyone who can play that stuff.I can strum, travis pick and sing just like him but I couldn't make a living doing that down here. When I perform at clubs on the beach and in local bars I use backround midi MP3
sequencing on most stuff cus' thats what they wanna hear but I yearn to play folk music.
Whadeya thank!?

My dad pulled out his old reel-to-reel tapes a couple of months ago. Apparently he had taped a bunch of songs from records some 30 years ago when he was in the Army. He had quite the amalgam of music on these tapes--everything from jazz to rock to country and we both had a blast listening to them. I quickly became hooked on one particularly beautiful ballad, only I didn't know who was the singer. My dad quickly answered my query. The song was Don Quixote, and we all know the awesome voice behind it.
Needless to say, I've gotten hooked. :) Two months later I'm definitely a GL fan. Bet there aren't too many 20-something fans out there, but I am one!

I'm Bruno the gardener from the north of France and I will appreciate too an autograph of you Mister Lightfoot. This is my third message on "Guestbook". Do you have received my letter sent to you for the first time on april 2002 ?
Please remember me.
Dear Gordon,
Hallo and thank you for all those lovely songs you wrote for us, for that magnificent voice, for those lovely melodies and music that have charmed nearly thirty years of my life. You are a very great artist, a singer-composer with your own unique style, who doesn't have to imitate others to be a success. My dearest wish has always been to go to one of your concerts, to be near to you, unfortunately I live far from Canada and you don't often come to France. You are an example to follow in the special world of show business, because you remain faithfull to your old songs that have won your popularity, to your musicians, to your public that you have been able to fidelise so easily by your talent, which is immense. Please do not change and continue for a very long time writing and singing as you do. We need singers like you.... My letter ends with this motto which is by me "May Mother Nature deign to give us what we have already stolen from her on many occasions !" (18/04/2002). Don't forget me, Ever yours, Bruno Kania, 44 rue de l'Abbé Cousin, 59493 Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France.

Shari Gilbert, 6308 Budlong Lake Ave., San Diego, Cailf. 92119. Now when is the last time you have made someone's millinium?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember the summer that Dream Street Rose came out in the very early eighties. I was staying with my sister in South Carolina and she had the vinyl of it. I was only about 12, but I fell in love with this mans music and it inspired me to take up guitar and still play today. I play and sing some of his songs and people always love them. Thanks for the inspiration Gordon!!

I had the pleasure of see Gordon Lightfoot at the Theatre of Performing Arts in Reading, Pa. on the 19 of August after a wait of 30 years to catch a venue close enough to my hometown (Baltimore) I took my 34 year old son and his friend who also love Gordons music...the show was perfect...having been a professional musician for 40 plus years, I know what I hear, and what I heard was a great concert...not a bad note through the whole thing...as for the people who have negative feedback about Gordon (his voice is shot, he shouldn't drink whiskey before a show, etc.) I can tell you from personal experience, the human voice changes after so many years...I've seen Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdink who have admitted to omitting old songs from their show because they just cant hit the notes anymore at 60-plus years...Gordon stood about 2 feet from the microphone and his voice was clear as a bell!...if you're reading this Gordon , your show , in this mans opinion, was flawless...I'm planing to see the Atlantic City show the end of October with my other son ...to those with the negative comments I have only one thing to say...those who can, do...those who CAN'T, criticize...keep up the wonderful music Gordon, and thank you AND your band for a wonderful evening...you can bet my great-grandchildren will know the name and music of Gordon Lightfoot...Ed Leicht, Baltimore, Maryland

Hello.
My name is Rhonda and I am a 41 year-old fan of Gord. I was lucky enough to catch his show in Aurora, Illinois on August 13th with my son Chris who is a fan as well. He is 16. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the show. There was a brief pause in between songs so I couldn't resist the opportunity to say, "We love you, Gord!!!" He was then met with great applause in agreement with me and then said meekly, "Who said that?" So I felt like I made a small connection to him, even though I was so far from the stage that he couldn't have even seen my face. After the show, I tried my best to meet the man, waiting until about midnight by the backstage door, but he was quickly transported to another location, and we watched him ride right by us...there were about 8 die hard fans still waiting and hoping for the off chance he might meet with us. I had gotten a stone with the word Harmony inscribed on it and I wanted to give it to him, since that is the name of his latest CD and a great song. Unfortunately, I couldn't give it to him personally, but I gave it to one of his managers and he said he would see that he gets it. It's really all about the music. I have been a groupie for a long time and I have met a lot of cool people, but the fact that I didn't meet him doesn't take anything away from the fact that it was such a great show. He is an awesome singer and a fantastic lyrisist! We drove over 3 hours to see him and it was about 4 a.m. when we got home but I would do it again tomorrow if I could. So, if you get the chance to catch a Gordon Lightfoot show, don't hesitate. Just do it!! I'm glad I did! If you could read my mind...I hope to hear from some other Gord fans out there!!

Glad to have you back on tour. I've seen you a few times and I'm proud to say that I just got a ticket to your Oct. 22 show at the Orpheum in Boston.
When I was growing up outside of Philadelphia PA, I began to love your music. I'm the last of 7 and brothers and sisters were into The Beatles, Beach Boys, The Four Seasons, etc. I used to always say ... "I like that guy, Gordon Lightfoot." Man, did I take a razing for that ... So you didn't fill Shea Stadium ... You put out great music.
I've got a HUGE favor. I'm turning 45 on the 22nd of October ... If you could sing "Circle of Steel" I would appreciate it. I know, it's kind of a sad Christmas tune ... but it's close enough. ****, I put you before the Beatles. It's the least you can do!
Best of luck,
Tom DiMartini

I saw Gordon Lightfoot Friday night at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. I was a little sad. The songs I'll love forever, but the voice is gone. No more extended high notes, and a gravely midrange. He has also slowed down several of the faster songs. Before you climb on my ass, I've known Gord since 1967. We played some of the Detroit folk clubs together..The Raven Gallery & Chessmate to name two. We both played a Friday set at what we learned was a porno movie theater trying to up its image. Much fun. Oh, well, I still have my IPod and my Martin D-35...Mike

During the school year of 1958 - 1959 the one room eight grade school Lawndale School located northwest of Dorchester, WI had a teacher named Mr. Kolman. We all adored him. He wasn't a very good academic instructor, but we learned a lot of life's lessons from him. Fights were settled in the boxing ring, and kangaroo court was held with peers as judges. We had long recesses with lots of teamwork in building snow forts and playing games. Mr. Kolman was not rehired again the next term, but he has been infamous to all of us from Lawndale School. You see he was the cook on the Edmond Fitzgerald. Thank you for putting someone who was so special to us into history Gordon. Our school reunion is on July 30th. We well be remembering all those great times and how we've learned from them.

I have been a Gord Lightfoot fan since I first heard him play at one of his first concerts in Orillia, back when he was playing with Terry Whelans. I even liked the Hola hoop song of his. Tonight was at the Mariposa Folk festival and he blew me away again like usual. I just never get tired of listening to him sing. He is unique one of a kind and is well loved here in his home town. Just thought I would drop in and let everyone know that the concert was a huge success. He left us wanting more and thats exactly how it should be.

I have been listening to Gordon's music since I first heard his own version of Early Morning Rain in 1968. This is my all time favorite song, one I wish to have played at my funeral if I have one. I have listened to the albums and songs daily since that time. I have purchased all albums, tapes and now CD's, even have duplicates in case one gets scratched. I live by the words in the music, the loneliness, the isolation and the caring. Gordon has been my favorite singer since that day in 1968. I have seen him in concert in Bozeman, MT., Lethbridge, Denver and in Houston. I hope to make a concert somewhere this year. I think he is a master with the words, feelings and putting it all together in the music. I do favor the earlier music, but I love it all.

I just recently discovered Gordon's music, and it's been like an elixer to my soul. His lyrics, his voice, and his energy come through with such a magical healing power. Thank you, Gordon, for helping me through some tough times recently. I just finished Gord's Gold 1, and I'm anxious to hear everything else. And I hope to see you in concert in either Massachusetts or Connecticut this fall! Or both if I'm lucky enough! Gordon, you are a beautiful soul and a great inspiration! Keep rockin!

Hi Gordon,
When I think of Canadian music, one of the first people that comes to my mind is you. Your songs have a wonderful way of transporting me back to my teen years, every time I hear one. You are the ambassador of folk music.
A lot of your music, I enjoy and in particular your collaboration with David Foster on "East of Midnight" stands out in my mind.
In closing may you have much continued success in the years to come and a heartfelt thank you for the music.
Best regards,
Brian Kehoe

I have been a Lightfoot fan ever since I was 8 years old. His voice has always been distinct, and warming to me. His lyrics have constantly painted pictures in my mind, and I found it pleasing that he used the title A Painter Passing Through on one of his albums, because I would always use that word "paint" when talking about him. His voice in my opinion was at his strongest during the Summertime Dream and Dream Street Rose
albums, but as an owner of all of his works, I am never tired of playing any of them.

I enjoyed very much my recent visit to your website. On memorable lyrics in GL's songs, my favorite is on Home from the Forest.
And as he lay there sleeping, a vision did appear
Upon his mantle shining the face of one so dear
Who loved him in the springtime of a long forgotten year
When the wildflowers did bloom ,in the forest

A Message to Gordon Lightfoot:
For decades I have studied your music since I graduated from th Academy of the Arts at 12 years old in 1970 here in Vancouver. I then, studied for 2 years under John Gould at Bill Lewis Music has, He was/is a specialist in Gordon Lightfoot guitar playing. Yes, as you should know, many of us here keep a watchful and studious eye on you. My ability to play your music for friends, family, etc., has been very special for me and them. Now, at 46 years old, I'm am prepared finally, to produce my music on CD named after it's title cut, 'Sapphire Blue'. I owe you an eternity for the music you have given us. It makes me very proud when I sit in front of friends with a beer in hand and my guitar on my lap and the first thing they ask is for a Lightfoot song. Your name is synonymous with the effect your music has on people. I pray everything is well for you and I really hope I can see your performance when you come to Vancouver. From one fellow guitarist to an other...BE STRONG, PLAY LONG. Thank you always... Dan W.

I just met a fellow Gordo afficianado, rare though we are.
She asked how I got hooked on Lightfoot.
While in high school, I was listening the local radio station, won a little contest and got a stack of promotional albums. One of those was Summer Side of Life by this Gordon Lightfoot guy... Ten Degrees and Getting Colder hooked me right off the bat and many of the rest of the songs caught my attention, even though I was more into Hendrix and Paul Revere at that point.
I got to see GL in concert twice, once at DAR Constitution Hall in college, once at the Virginia State Fair a few years ago...
But Gord's music still runs through a lot of my life and with the discovery of my new friend who has Gordo very high on her list, hopefully we'll be singing along to Nous Vivons Ensemble for a long while.

My father used to play his guitar in the basement & he, my brother, sister & I would all sing along to Gordon Lightfoot songs while my dad played his guitar. These are my favorite memories! Gordon Lightfoot has taught me to appreciate good lyrics and good music. There is no better singer/songwriter in the entire world. He can take away pains that are deeply enbedded into your heart and explain them in a simple and soulfull way!

Gordon Lightfoot has extremely good vocals. Unfortunately his songs are not widely played which I am kind of surprised and thus he did not get the kind of international recognition that he deserves. Fortunately for me, I have listened to almost all his albums and I have this to say. Mr.Lightfoot, you are extraordinary. You can make a dull song comes alive by both your vocal and guitar. You are in the same league with John Denver if not better. Keep up the great work and I will buy your album without a second thought.

Hello,
I have been a loyal fan of Gordons since the '60s!I am a 59 years young senior and recently retired.I had a long commute to and from work and my commute music was always Gordon. I no longer have to commute, but Gordon's music is still played when I am in my car or preferable curled up reading a book and listening to him at home!! As a hopeless romantic, my favorites are "Beautiful" and "Song For A Winter's Night"!

Have loved your music for many years and I still play the old 33,s from our record collection.Love the album covers -you sure were a handsome one- my husband would have loved all that hair!!To you personally, I have a question. I worked at the Parkview Art Gallery in the Foxhead Hotel back in the late 60 and 70,s for Dot and Hal Logan. During the summer months,I became aquainted with a portrait artist who did pastel and charcoal sketches and portraits at the gallery. His name was Alain Langile. He also dabbled in his spare time doing palletknife and acrilic pictures, similar to Kierstead. When he left Niagara I purchased some of his large paintings as he needed the cash and couldn,t take them with him. I have never heard and have always wondered if you have any information to share. He always told me that you were a good friend.
Hope you get this, and sorry about posting this way,
I am 70 this year and an avid camper- We camped on Lake Superior on Canada dday a few years ago and they had a beach partyand fire and everyone sang :The wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. I will always remember. Sincerely Effie Golchuk Niagara Falls Ontario

What a greta website. Gordon Lightfoot is my favorite artist of all time. His music just does it for me. I guess I fell in love with him and his music when I saw him in concert in Albuquerque, NM, I think it was in 1970. I've seen him in concert every time that he's come to NM. I've seen him in CO at least 5 times, Once in Las Vegas, NV, once in Kansas City and once in Tulsa, OK. I'd love to tell you all what my favorite GL song is, but I truly can't pick just one. I love so many. Ok, here's my question. Any chance he'll be in NM, CO, NV anytime soon?

I will be at that concert and oh would I love to meet my all time favorite poet, singer, and guitarist. If that doesn't happen at least I can hope for a seat where I could at least see his features. Small town living has it's draw backs on getting good seats at his concerts.

I've always enjoyed Gordon Lightfoots compositions. I played a lounge gig for years on the St.Lawrence river on the Canadian border. I always put in his music on breaks and it just had this essence while the river water glimmered and the ships went by. I now play with a show in Las Vegas, and playing his music both at home and on the highway fills the void of being away from the place I will always cherish most...The St. Lawrence River, and the warm summer nights with the backdrop of the river, and Gordon Lightfoot. I've loved Gordon Lightfoot's music since the early 60's, when my older brother played his music. Was lucky enough to see him in Boulder, Colorado a number of years ago, and have always wanted to meet him...oh well. In the mid 70's, I cared for my brothers 2 little girls and we used to go jeeping up a small pass near Minturn, Co. Jeeping up this old logging road after a rain, I was thinking about the song "Pussy willows, Cattails", and we came upon this area thick with young pines. These were literally glistening with dew and it was gorgeous and surreal! One experience with Gordon's music that I could never forget. Wish he would come to Colorado again!

With Johnny Cash billed as the storyteller of the United States, I see Gordon as the storyteller of Canada.
Many songs gently seep into the subconcious, and bring about a feeling that cannot quite be placed to an actual memory. That is how powerful the story is being told in song, you end up feeling it while listening.
God bless and good health to you, Mr. Lightfoot.

Gordon, your songs have kept me company over the years. As a former US Merchant Seaman, my favorite is Edmund Fitzgerald. I always took your music with me to sea and it helped keep me sane on insane ships. I almost got killed about 4 times!
I also love the Canadian Railroad Trilogy. My great grandfather was Secretary-Treasurer of the Union Pacific so I feel a connection to the songs.
Unfortunately, I suspect that my ancestor was a fat-cat robber-baron who used unethical means to amass an obscene fortune (all gone now). There was a lot of that in the railroad industry. I think you forgot to mention that! Poetic license!
Anyway, we LOVE you in New Hampshire. Come back soon!

My favorite song? Can't pick just one. "Highway Songs" I enjoy enough to have made a small personal film using it as the music backdrop. So is "Alberta Bound" (but if I sing along, I substitute "Montana" for Alberta--in fact, do the same with "Highway Songs.") I've met Mr. Lightfoot; He's as gracious as his music. And spontaneous too, as I asked him "May I give you a hug?" his reply was an immediate warm embrace. Imagine my suprise--but then perhaps I suprised him too by not asking for his autograph or photo. Back to favorite songs, I'd also have to say "Don Quixote", "Boss Man", and "Patriot's Song." ****, I might as well admit it---I honestly can't think of a single song he's done that I didn't like. They're all great.

My first Gordon Lightfoot experience at age 9 was so vivid that I find it hard to believe three decades have since passed. "It was only yesterday..." are the only descriptive words. It was summertime in the early '70s and my family and I were traveling, the first light of dawn appeared on the horizon and, ironically, the radio played Sundown. If only he could have known how instrumental he was in awakening my appreciation of music. There is no other musician/songwriter that has reached me the same way. We all have our own visions to live, and Gordon, THANK YOU for following yours.

Gordon Lightfoot`s music has been in my life since I was 10 years old. When on a county drive or at home there is a feeling of warmth and great story telling
from the master music artist Gordon! My favorite tune is Rainy Day People.

Ah, Gord's music is so great, and he's been around for so long, I just can't imagine not having Lightfoot tunes in my life. I'm glad he's making a comeback, although his voice is so strained now I simply can't listen to the new stuff. May the road be kind, Gord.

I have been a fan for more years than I will admit I am old. I will be having a bad day and listen to Gord's music and I fall for him all over again. I have driven far just to see a little speck on the stage but it has been worth it. I have to say of all the music I like I trully just love that Guy. I wish some day I could meet him face to face & give him a big old hug.

Gordon Lightfoot, I am thrilled to see you have recovered from your illness and are back to performing and playing the beautiful music I have always loved. You have a voice and tone quality that brings such happy memories back to me of years gone by! I bought some of your music from years ago and I could just roll the windows down in the dead of winter here in Alaska and crank up the volume and just drive and drive and drive. Thanks for a lifetime of joy and such beautiful music, your are a treasure of a lifetime. Thanks for all you mean to so many people!

I first heard Gord in 68' on a program called "folk bag" that ran from 10-12 each nite. The song was "steel rail blues" and I was immediately hooked! I have been to many of his concerts over the years and I am still hooked. I predicted back then that he would be one of the best songwriters and performers ever. I wish him well!

Gord, I look forward to your comeback this year. I wish you all the health and happiness you deserve. You've made a difference in this world. I've been a struggling, starving singer/songwriter for over 20 years. There's peace in living your life the way you're supposed to. The world has much to learn from those of us who shamelessly bare our souls for the love of song. You're a wonderful inspiration. All the best.
P.S. I'm from Newfoundland. A number of years ago while working as a journalist on the Burin peninsula, a lovely lady named Addy Pittman of Marystown told me you and a buddy stayed at her house for three days during a tour of the island.

For me, there is absolutely no better musician who has ever touched me the way Lightfoot has. The song " Is There Anyone Home " is my favorite one in the history of recorded music. In the summer of 1974 when my parents went through a divorce,I discovered Lightfoots music, and it's been a special connection for me ever since.
I remember walking through cold Oregon snow and thinking of the melody to Pussywillows, Cattails, and it will always be associated with winter of 1974. I got to meet Lightfoot in 1985 at a show in Portland, Oregon and talked with him about trout fishing. His eyes really lit up. And you know, I really did'nt feel like a fan talking to a star, but it was more like a one on one with a fellow outdoorsman for a brief moment. Never will forget it. He really enjoyed the chat which made me feel good.

I too grew up in Canada, listening to Gordon Lightfoot and enthralled with the humanity and sensitivity of the lyrics. I attended many concerts, from MAssey Hall to Stratford and found a consummate performer who made everyone feel they were a special friend. Now that I have moved far from my home, I find that I can bring back so many memories, just by playing or singing favorites and now my son is an avid fan as well.
Thanks for a lifetime of thought and emotion provoking tales that ever warm my heart.

Many people set out from Australia to marvel at the natural wonders of Canada. The tourist brochures miss the one thing that would be a "must see" for me (if I had the money ). GL in concert. Most of those reading this will have been blessed with this, some from what I have read in this website , many times. Whoops I must keep such blatant jealousy out of this spiel.
To try to summarise the strengths of this giant of words , melody and spirit is impossible. One very common feature of his songs though, is he recognises the good in people, doesn't shy away from their failings but doesn't make trite value judgements. He never comes across as being self important despite the fact that so many of us can't resist gushing over him. You can almost see him thinking as yet another reporter sucks up to him (secretly rolling his eyes), " yeah yeah I walk on water - and never done a thing wrong in my life ...." Talent like his is so much more inspiring when it is matched with an attitude that recognises he too is only human.

You have always been a favorite of ours. My husband and I Sailed all the great lakes. When we sailed over Whitefish Point I remembered the words to the wreck of the Edmund Fitgerald. That song always got to me. Last summer we stayed at the Coast Gaurd Station at Whitefish Point. It was so beautiful. My Husband is writing a Novel about Sailing and a love lost, but you don't no how he lost her. He also wrote a poem first about the novel. It was publish and I love the words so much that I would like a song with thos words in it.We have some friends playing around with it plus my husband plays guitar alittle and is trying to come up with some music. But these words are special and need someone like you to creat a great song. I don't no if I'm doing the right thing. But if your interested please let us no.

Introduced my dad to Gord's music while I was in high school in 1970. I wore out the University of Maryland's "Lightfoot" cassette listening to it every day in the library while studying in the early 70's. After seeing GL in concert, I had to go get a 12-string, which I've continued to try to play over the years. Favorite song is "Song for a Winter's Night." What a talented musician and writer!

i have a very special friend who back in 1992 was injured in an accident and was in a coma for over a week and a half. his mother knew gordon lightfoot was his favorite artist. they tried everything to bring him out of the coma. then someone suggested they use his favorite music and see what happened. once the tape was going my friend became calm and would respond to questions etc. when the headphones where removed he would become very combative and hard to control. the doctors and nurses credit the music of gordon lightfoot with his coming out of the coma. when i met my friend i was suprised to find someone who enjoyed and loved the music as much as i. i would just like to say thank you for you wonderful music. someday my friend would love to shake your hand and say thankyou in person. thank's to your music i'll have my friend forever. thank you from both of us from the bottom of our hearts.

Hi, I am a single mother of 5 (4 adult children and a 12-year old). I have been a Gord fan since I was a youngster. My family called me an "odd ball" becasue Gord's music was before my time, and why i understood what the words and music meant. I didn't have many friends, so listening to Gord's music opened a way for me to understand the joys and pains of my everyday life.

I have been in love with Gordon since my late departed love (Jimmy)turned me on to him in 1980. He took me to a Gordon concert in Austin, I was completely blown away and hooked on Gord from then on...I was 19 then, and pregnant with our son. I am now 43 and more in love with this mans' music than I have ever been. I just wish Jimmy was still on this earth to enjoy with me, but our 23 year old son is a musician and has learned many Lightfoot tunes and often plays mine and his late fathers' favorites in his own fashion and it is a wonderful tribute to this genius Mr. Lightfoot and his unbelievable music. Dear Florian,
You web site is working just fine with my FireFox 1.0 (on FC2, and Knoppix 3.7) And I must admit that I am pretty impressed with the fact that you have chosen this Great Canadian Topic, for the purposes of your study. I am glad to see that it is not only the Canadians who apprieate his talents.
Sincerly

What a wonderful site. I just discovered it and am thrilled. I first heard Lightfoot in the 60's, when my Godbrother brought home the first album, Lightfoot.
I was only 12 or so at the time, but I fell in love
with this album. Having been already a fan of The Kingston Trio, The Weavers and many other folk singers, I felt the soul of Lightfoot. As time went on, and I found myself in High School, I met a fellow named Jim, who played both a 6 and 12 string and was also a fan of Gord's. We would sing every Lightfoot song, harmonizing the nights away.
The first concert I attended was at the Troubador in LA in 1967 or 8, I cannot recall the actual year.
From there, we began attending every venue we could.
I recall my fascination in Santa Barbara once, in an old either church or college hall, sitting on the floor right in the front and watching Gord and Red Shea (on 12 string) as they did Canadian Railroad Trilogy. Red's fingers flew.....Incredible. The hair on my arms still stands up when I think of that night.
Over the years I traveled to many concerts
and had many occasions to meet and greets bat and am thrilled. I first heard Lightfoot in the 60's, when my Godbrother brought home the first album, Lightfoot.

and I have to say, I still to this day adore and admire Gordon, Rick, Terry and all the way back to Red Shea for the talent and genuine affability the Gordon Lightfoot group brings to the world of music
and wordsmithing! For the world of folksongs....lifesongs.
IMHO, there are few songwriters who can capture an incident, a feeling, a relationship, the land, the sea and the trees as does Gord.

I am not sure that there are better lyrics than written in "If You Could Read My Mind," particularly,
If I could read your mind love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take.
Lightfoot is gifted in his writing and in his singing.

I sometimes here a song that gives me a strange feeling or a cold chill. When I first heard, The Wreck Of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I'm not sure how old I was but it seemed to give me that strange feeling. I ask quite a few people if the had ever heard it but they all said no. I found this web site and got the lyrics. Now I just need to get the song itself. I love Gordon Lightfoot's voice and he was made to sing this song.

Hallo, I'm Bruno the gardiner from the North of France. You can find another commentary of mine the 18 of December 2004. I would like to be with Gordon today,on that special day,to wish him an happy New Year and thank you too. That's an evidence for me since a very, very long time, Gord is the greatest songwritter from all times. I have for you another good french translation of one of these song called "stay loose" (I really think that's a very optimist and good song too): "ne vous en faites pas". I will end with a suggestion by Voltaire: Voltaire's Novel "Candide" ends with the suggestion that the best thing each of us can do in life is to cultivate our own gardens. I will add that luxury with me is to listen to Gord's records in my garden. Me, Gordon and Mother Nature... A WONDERFUL TRILOGY. Please write to me. Bruno.
