I've enjoyed Lightfoot since first hearing him in the early seventies. I learned to play guitar from his records and even corresponded with his (first)lead guitar player Red Shea while I was in college. I saw Gord at the Universal City Ampitheater in '73, the Hollywood Bowl in '74 and met him backstage in San Diego in 1975. My wife daughter and I also saw him just a few months ago in Denver. He sounds as good as ever and really seems to be enjoying himself at the spry age of 61. There's no finer songwriter in my opinion. Thanks for the great website! Bob Graham

Can anyone please tell me which CD of Gordon's may contain the song "The Auctioneer"? I've looked through them at CD Now, but I can not find it. This was a special song of an Uncle that passed away about 10 months ago. His wife is attempting to find the song. Any help would be appreciated! Thank You!

About all I can say is that Mr. Lightfoot, Sir, you have feeling. I just discovered your music a couple weeks ago, and I must say that I cant keep myself from whistling, humming, or singing it all day. I'm 27, and was always into punk music, and it has feeling too, but its more anger than anything. Yours is music for life, love, death, and for the music it self. I don't know if it means much to you, or if you will even read this, but thank you. You have given me a new taste for life, and have made this part of the year (hard days for orphans,) bearable. thank you again. P.S. did she go your way?

hi my name is Rhianna Barr and i am 19 years old. I may be a little young to be listening to Gordon's music, by i think his songs are far better quality and talneted than something Miss Spears would sing. i have alot of his records, and the Gord's Greatest cd from '75. My favorite songs are -Does your mother know,- The first time i saw her- Rich man's Spiritual- You just gotta be- I'll tag along- Canadian Railroad Trilogy-Satuday Clothes,- and "If you could read my mind" just to name a few. i think people my age should listen to Gord's music if they ever get bored of Boy bands and B. spears. keep up the good work Gordon!

Some Texans like Lightfoot too!!! I've seen him in concert 5 times - once in Anchorage, twice in Ft. Worth, and twice here in The Woodlands (Houston). It's a crying shame that Canadian music doesn't do well here in the states, but those of us in the know, know what others are missing.

Been a GL fan since hearing "Sundown" in the early '70's. I am coming to the end of a 20+ year career in the US Navy, and have listened to Gordon's music throughout. His nautical songs will always hold a special place in my life..."Come all you rustic old sea dogs who follow the bright Southern Cross"- 'rounded the Horn in '85 and I swear I could feel their presence. Thanks, Gord- "you ain't been done in yet"!

I have been a fan of Gordy's since I was wee little, my mother having gone to school with him in Tweed, Ontario. She told me of how she used to date his close friend and how they would double date and Gordon would sing at all the school assembly functions. From the start, I was enchanted by the music and his voice, which possesses the ability to take the listener away. He truely tells a story with his songs and I will always love his music for that. He's one of the best!

Its been nearly 40 years since I last talked with Gord. We met when he was singing at a coffee house on McNab street in Hamilton Ont. The band I was playing drums in, "Nicky Moore & The Sceptres" was working across the street at the Flamingo Bar. Gord also guest shot with our band on our TV show "Club Eleven Dance Party" on channel 11 Hamilton. It was pretty obvious then that he was a very special talent, and I continue to listen to his work...keep on truckin...regards from North Carolina

Talking of which, why don't you write a new song and bring it into the lyrics it must be one of Canada's great peices of folk history and highly evocative. It should have a super potential for your wonderful imagary? Please don't forget your British followers, it would be great to have a few concerts from you over here again soon. Kind regards, Nicholas

I first got turned on to Gordon Lightfoot when I was in Basic Training (Air Force) back in the 1980's. I was a 20 y.o. female from Brooklyn NY and had never heard anything like that.(It totally blew my mind). Over the years his music has been such a comfort to me. Though I have never experienced nature and the freedom that Gordon sings about, I feel the music in my soul and feel as though I am with him. Peace to all!

I remember the night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. The storm was truly terrible and the TV 6 news flash that evening stating that all contact was lost with the mighty vessel. I shivered with the cold. The first time I heard the "Ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald", I cried. I still do, especially in Novembers here on the shores of the Mighty Lake Superior. Thank you for immortalizing all of the brave sailors who died that night. There is no greater tribute. I saw Gordon in concert over 15 years ago in Indiana. It would be so wonderful to see him again in concert, but here in Houghton, MI, not far from that Superior Lake.

Originating from Michigan's upper peninsula, I've always related to Gordon Lightfoot's lyrics, especially when living overseas. Songs about the Great Lakes are rare, and songs that move our souls are invaluable. For 30 years, I've loved no other songs as these; every time I sit down with my guitar or listen to a cassette or CD, I want to say thank you. Our hearts have been filled for many years...and we hope many years more. After the privilege of seeing Gordon Lightfoot in concert three times, I can only hope for another opportunity from Wisconsin. Also, the upcoming television performance will be a treasure. Thank you just isn't enough.

Recently went to the Bob Dylan concert in Toronto Got totally freaked when my gal friend nudged me and pointed out 'Gordon Lightfoot'"himself"... sitting in the row behind us and a few seats down. Between sets, some shirted type guy, called him out and we watched him walk back stage, probably because they are friends. ...Well....halftime being over here he comes back to his seat. He had made it clear that he was there to enjoy the concert not to sign autographs and shake paws..but ..I had to take a shot..stuck out my hand and pleaded..."Mr. Lightfoot". ...He shuffled down the row with his back to me...(I was just happy to see him, and woulden't have thought anything if he chose to ignore me)......He stopped,... lightly pivoted towards me, took a step back.. grabbed my awe struck appendage and smiled right into my face. one stoned groove A small thing for some but Gordon was always a great inspiration for me. Wish I could send him some of my songs. Wish I could send him some of my killer dute. Wish I could just say.. thanks Gord.

Gorden's music has had a tremendous impact on my life through some very difficult times. I need a concert schedule, as I do not want to pass through this life without having seen him in person, preferably in a small Canadian town environment. How do you obtain his concert schedule?

I, like many others grew up with the sound of Gordon Lightfoot. I couldn't wait for the next album to be released so I could add it to my collection. I also purchased every song book that was publishhed, one for each of the albums, Gord I hope that you read this. You are much loved and revered by your fans as you can see by the long list of entrys into this site. I loved yor music so much that I played it all the time. I got lost in it and so absorbed in your lyrics and chords oh those unmistakable chords. I play music for a living and you being the wonderful guitar picker that you are would appreciate good guitars when you see one. I bought a brand new d-18 martin like the one you are using im many pictures I have of you and also a j-200 Gibson. Have you ever used one of these. It has a deep resonant base and warm treble sound. I learned to play the finger style for folk music and combining that with the tremendous chord arrangments just blow you away. The first time I played in public was at a coffee house back around 1970 and I was scared to death at performing in public. I had to choose a song that I hoped would grab the attention of the audience as I am not much of a writer. When the houlse lights went down and the curtain rolled back, there I was in front of a large audience and I wanted to be anywhere but there. I started the finger style intro to "Steel Rail Blues" and when I saw toes tapping and people kinda moving with the rythme I knew It would be ok. I have played many of your songs and I hope that you dont mind. I appreciate the fact that you shared them with us. I will be down in your area in the summer of 2001 and hope to get a chance to see you if you would like to meet an old guitar picker fan of yours. All best to you Gord and thanks from the bottom of my heart for all those beautiful songs. Your voice and lyrics have been my musical inspiration. Cliff Redden

Lightfoot is one of the most "irreplaceable" artists in Canadian Music. I think his story songs, such as Edmund Fitzgerald, and Canadian Railroad Trilogy are the best in his repetoire, making him a more "educated" songwriter than anyone else in pop music today. As a longtime Lightfoot fan I feel that he should get back with (sorry CLEMENTine I guess you became a fan too late in his career) Red Shea and John Stockfish. Those two musicians were the BEST he has had in his career, and when they left him, he unfortunately faded into a downhill swirl. He needs Red, and John to make himself successful, and if they are not likely to come back, than well sorry fans, he may not have another top 40 hit or another Juno. This site is pretty cool, keep up the good work CHAR!!! and Gord if you are reading this, get Red and John back into your band, get a haircut, lose the 'stache, and go electric!!! I would love to see you go electric.

I have been a devoted fan of Gordon Lightfoot for years. His music and lyrics have been a constant inspiration. Much of my own songwriting owes much to his style and persona. His songs have been with me as: friend, comforter, teacher, healer. My current obsession is his song "Restless" which I seem to be singing and playing almost daily now. What more can I say, he's a modern day hero. He has touch my life.

I just finished watching"Gordon Lightfoot, Live" and am reminded of what an incredible singer and songwriter Lightfoot is. It's so impressive to hear someone sound so much like his recordings in an age when most artists need 3 or 4 back-up singers to "carry" them through a live performance. I've been a fan for years and will certainly continue to be in the future. I wonder when he'll be back in Saskatchewan performing.

He was kind enough to come out and chat with those of us to remained long after his show. For me, Lightfoot is one of the all-time greats. Favorite Lightfoot song: Saturday Clothes

It was early evening and I let him in. He said he was playing at the Village Corner down the street and had just picked up a copy of his first release and would I give it a listen. I did and was blown away. Breaking the rules I played it on the air right away then gave it to Eddie Houston , the Music Director, the next day. He charted it on the "Silver Dollar Survey" that week. Have loved Gordon's music since the 60's. Saw him in concert many times in London (Royal Albert Hall). Took my kid brother to see him when he was 12-ish ... who is now 35 (and still loves Gord's music!). Would love to see him in concert in England again sometime soon!!! Let me know if this is ever arranged! Haven't seen him live for many many years (probably 20!). Most of my friends are nostalgic about the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc, etc ... but at that time my great heros were Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, etc, etc. Still sounds like magic!

OK, among many of the artists I have in my collection, Gord would have to be my favorite. I have all the albums available on CD and Gord's Gold on LP which was my mom's. I really think Gord's music in incredible. I'm only 22 and listen to at least one of his CD's a week. I love his music, his voice and just the wonderful songs he has written, and me being a guitar player I love playing his music as well. The other important artists i have an abundance of is Billy Joel and Neil Diamond. But, Gord has always been my fav. I just hope to see Gord in concert someday, but he only comes to the Philadelphia area sometimes. Ah well i guess i'll continue to watch Gord as "a passing ship" until then.

What caught my imagination years ago was the Canadian Railroad Trilogy. The epic put to music by someone who could sing and write moved me. My family were Canadian before the Crown came and I just found the story riveting. The music of the simple ballads like Alberta Bound and Love songs like If You Could Read My Mind, touch my heart. And of course the retelling of the Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald still gets to me. Gordy is a moving songwriter and storyteller.

Hi! I too am so thrilled that Gordon Lightfoot is still out there doing concerts! I am from Duluth, MN, originally, and love to hear that Canadian accent!! He is going to be in concert in Duluth I think as part of a 25 year tribute to the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in November! Would SO LOVE to see that, but...BRRR! We live in sunny Florida now. I really AM hoping my husband will take me there, though, because we got married there 25 years ago, not many days after that boat went down, so that song always takes us home. Then we saw Gordon in concert there in Spring of 1978 and sure loved the song, "The Circle is Small", ya sure never hear that one much any more!

I got into him at the very end of 1997, when during a hot night at 4:00am, I decided to put the radio on and flick through some AM stations cause I couldn't sleep. A catchy song (Sundown) came on, and I made a note of it. While doing the same thing a week later, another catchy song came on (IYCRMM). I thought, hang on, haven't I heard this name before. Then I thought, he can't have every song like this. Then I found summertime dream at a record fair for 50 cents. Bought it and heard more of the same. This was a year later!. So, throughout last year, I started collecting all his albums, and found that all his songs are similar - "simple, catchy tunes". My favourite album is actually DSR, with EW second. I like that DQ to Salute region the most. APPT has a special meaning cause I bought that a day before my grandfather died, so all the songs on that remind me of him and a girl that I was getting to know really well. However, we lost contact as she has gone interstate. So, this situation, my grandfather's death, and finishing the undergraduate part of my course all comes back as happy/sad combo when I listen to APPT. Favourite songs @ the moment are farewell anabel, auctioneer, long thin dawn, odr, uncle toad said, endless wire, heaven help the devil, salute, dream street rose and wherefor and why. Most of the songs bring back some special memory. I know it's weird for a 22 year old to be listening to both led zeppelin and gordon within the space of a couple hours, but it does happen! Anyone else around here in their early 20's????? Better stop rambling, Mende

I HAVE BEEN A GL FAN SINCE THE EARLY 60'S. I HAVE A SISTER 9 YEARS OLDER WHO LISTENED TO HIS MUSIC ALONG WITH IAN AND SILVIA, PETER PAUL AND MARY, ETC. I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING GORDON IN CONCERT A COUPLE DOZEN TIMES AND WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE MY PICTURE TAKEN WITH HIM BACK STAGE IN DALLAS, TX IN 1976, WITH AN AUTOGRAPH. I JUST SAW HIM AGAIN ON AUGUST 25TH HERE IN DENVER CO AND IT WAS LIKE VISITING WITH AN OLD FRIEND. I DID NOT STAY AROUND AND WAIT FOR HIM TO EMERGE FROM BACKSTAGE AS I AM RECOVERING FROM SURGERY AND WAS NOT FEELING TOO WELL, BUT I WOULD NOT HAVE MISSED THE CONCERT EVEN IF I WAS ONE DAY POST OP. WHEN I MET HIM HE WAS PRETTY DRUNK BUT HE WAS SO NICE TO ME. I VISITED WITH HIM FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES AND I FELL IN LOVE. IT IS A MEMORY I WILL CHERISH FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I ONLY HOPE THE CONCERT THIS YEAR IS NOT THE LAST TIME I SEE HIM LIVE. I AM GLAD GORDON IF YOU ARE READING THIS THAT YOU ARE CLEAN AND SOBER AND ENJOYING YOUR LIFE. I WORRIED FOR YEARS ABOUT YOUR DRINKING AND HOPED YOU WOULD SEE THE LIGHT AND GIVE IT UP. I AM PROUD OF YOU AND HOPE YOU HAVE MANY MORE HAPPY YEARS. THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AND THE MEMORIES AND FOR THE PRICELESS KODAK MOMENT BACKSTAGE. I LOVE YOU. KATHY

Your website is extremely professional and comprehensive and you are to be credited for all the work you have done in maintaining this. The first Lightfoot song I ever heard was "The Minstrel of the Dawn" back in 1970 and it struck me as, to paraphrase something Salieri says in "Amadeus", as the music of Paradise. All these years later, I can still go back and recollect "the wonder of that night" when I first heard Lightfoot. I also feel, as another contributer stated in your guestbook, that the music of Gordon Lightfoot has been a backdrop to my life, and probably to the lives of a great deal of other people.

When i was a young teenager back in the 1970s i used to go with my uncle down to the corner pub in Dietrich, Idaho. He gave me a few quarters to keep me quiet, and over and over again i played "Carefree Highway" on the jukebox. Since then he's been my favorite artist...i feel sort of like i've grown older with him. Thanks for the website...didn't realize there were so many other GL fans out there. I especially didn't think there were any female fans...seems like my love for his music has probably chased away more than a couple of would-be girlfriends!!

The first album I ever bought was one of Gordon Lightfoot's, I lived in Finland Minnesota when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down, I was amazed at how GL's song about the Fitgerald affected me when I first heard it. My children knew all the words of Gordon's songs and could sing them better than Sesame Street songs. My husband and I had tickets to Gordon's concert in Casper Wyoming, but Tex died before the the concert, I went alone and felt at peace then, it was something we had planned for a long time and I went with my husband in my heart. GL's songs were played at the funeral, it seems my life has always had Gordon in it and I gladly will keep it that way. I missed the concerts in Colorado where I now live so I guess I will be travelling at least once this year to another state. It will be the first time to see him in concert since Casper, it will be a wonderful reunion for me. I hope he never tires of entertaining us, his fans.

Last night after the concert in Denver, for the second time,I got to shake Gord's hand. More about this later.I first saw Gord in concert in 1967 at EXPO 67,the World's Fair in Montreal, Canada, when I was just 13 years old. After moving to the States in 1970 I was lucky enough to see him in concert two times in San Diego, two times in Los Angeles, two times in Phoenix and one time in Fort Worth. It was at the 1987 Fort Worth concert at Billy Bob's Texas that through sheer luck I managed to get a back stage pass [which I still have] from Pee Wee Charles. My wife Cindy and I and Cindy's Mom were having dinner before the concert at a restaurant close to Billy Bob's and I kept noticing a familiar face at the table next to us.I finally asked the guy "Do we know each other" and he said he was with Gordon Lightfoot's band. I said "You are the steel guitar player,Pee Wee Charles. We're here to see the concert tonight."We talked for a while and then he asked me if I would like to meet Gordon. Of course I said "Yes" and he gave me the pass. That concert was memorable to me because I remember Gord playing a few songs solo without the band.I had never seen this before. After the concert we had a hard time getting back stage because even though we had the pass, our name wasn't on "The List" We finally got back stage and talked with all the members of the band and got them to autograph one of our ticket stubs.[All except Rick Haynes the bass player] Finally I got to meet Gord ,shake his hand, talk for a few minutes and also get his autograph on the ticket stub. Cindy's Mom had brought a small camera along and she took a picture of Gord and I standing side by side.I also had the audacity to give Gord a copy of a song that I had written called "Ten Degrees and Getting Colder-Sequel 21 Years Later" I had frantically written down the words on a bar napkin during the intermission. Thinking back on that moment I know that I deserved the blank stare that he gave me. That's the first time I got to meet Gord in person. The next 13 years I was real busy in Colodado Springs starting our own business and helping to raise Our twin boys, born in 1990. During those years I always kept up with Gord's new music and realized how much I missed seeing him in concert. I finally got hooked up to the internet in January of 2000 and the first thing I did was to see if there were any Lightfoot websites. I was astounded to find this incredible website and especially happy to find a list of tour dates. As soon as I heard about the PBS taping of the April 19,2000 concert in Reno, I called to see if any tickets were still available. I was lucky to get 2 tickets in the last row of the upper balcony. We flew to Reno a couple of days early because I had heard that they would be doing sound c****s and rehearsals the 2 nights before the concert. To make a long story even longer, we were escorted out of the theatre several times in the days before the concert and couldn't find a way to get back stage passes. The concert was incredible and I came home and wrote about it on this same web page around April 26[see archives if you are interested] Now about last night and the second time that I got to meet Gord. Cindy and I drove up to Denver and c****ed into a hotel about a block away from the Paramount Theatre. We walked over to the theatre around 3:00 pm to see if we could find a way to get back stage passes for after the concert. We had no luck so we had a bight to eat at the Paramount Cafe and shopped along the 16th street mall and did some serious people watching.[We don't get out in the big city too often, by choice, not by lack of opportunity] Around 7:30pm we headed to the theatre and witnessed a great show. Gord was possitively chatty compared to most of his shows. He talked about how much he likes to tour and "how he was going to tour until the touring ends and then do the big tour in the sky" and how he had had only 3 days to write the Canadian Railroad Trilogy for a TV special back in 1967 and something about papier mache rails and sledge hammers and how he had borrowed the format for CRT from the Civil War Trilogy written by someone who had become his friend but was now passed away. We were in row Z, only 26 rows back but we found the volume during the first set to be too low. The sound guys must have made some adjustments during intermission because the sound levels during the second half were much better. One particular moment of the concert gave me goosebumps and that was towards the end of CRT. It's hard to explain but the volume went up, he slowed the tempo down and he intensified the words and the feelings in the song. When the song was done the crowd went wild with applause and most of us jumped to our feet and yelled. Anyways, at the end of the concert Gord made reference to it being "a hot Friday night" and "wanting to get out of here" He only did one encore [Old Dan's Records] and then came back on stage and bowed to the audience several times and left. Well, when we had gone into the concert hall it was indeed a hot and dry Friday night but when we walked around to the back stage door of the hall it was sprinkling rain and breazy. Cindy was wearing heels, a cotton skirt and a tank top and stood shivering as we waited with about 40 other people for the band and Gordon to come out. As The rain intensified I felt like a real heel. Just as we were starting to go back to the hotel after waiting about 40 minutes,Barry the drummer came out trying to go incognito but some of us recognized him and asked him to talk a while, pose for pictures and sign autographs. It amazes me how incredibly friendly and cordial every single person connected with Gordon's concerts are. Every member of the band ,his personal pilot,Joe, his equipment driver,Bill and especially Gord himself. After we talked with Barry and Bill we noticed that Domino's was delivering pizza backstage so we figured that it was going to be a while before the rest of the band was going to come out so we went back to the hotel, got Cindy into some dry and warm clothes, grabbed the umbrella from the car and headed back to the stage door. As we got close we could see camera flashes going off and the small crowd of people gathered around Gordon.Imagine if you will, 11:30 at night with the rain pouring down and there's Gord with his leather jacket on standing there signing autographs, shaking hands, talking with his fans and posing for pictures. The first thing that I thought was OMYGOD he's going to get a chill and catch a cold and miss some concert dates. I grabbed our umbrella and held it over him and the people he was talking to [much to the relief of one of the guys who was trying to get Gord into a car driven by Rick Haynes the bass player] Since I was holding the umbrella I got the chance to talk with Gord and get his autograph on the picture of he and I from Billy Bob's from the backstage visit in 1987. At that point the guy who was trying to get Gord into the car became adamant with the fans that Gord had to leave and steered Gord to the waiting car. Gord got into the car and I thought that was that.A few minutes later as Cindy and I were walking past the car, Gord rolled down the window and I asked him if he would sign a picture of me standing under the marquis sign with his name on it from the Reno PBS special concert. His eyes lit up and he said"We got to keep every song from that show for the TV special" and he gladly signed my picture. Well that's the story of the second time I got to meet Gordon Lightfoot. Let me just say that I'm a very mellow guy and I'm not a fanatic about anything. But after meeting Gord the first time I always knew that I would get to meet him again. There was no doubt in my mind. He has been a major part of my musical life and has had a major impact on my personal life since the mid 60's. Hopefully a few of you out there will understand why I would go through all this.I understand and accept it and thank God my "Beautiful" wife Cindy understands.... PS. I finally got Rick Haynes' autograph on the concert ticket stub from the Billy Bob's concert in 1987.

I've only been on the Web for a few weeks but have been impressed with the way people can connect. A site like this only reinforces the warm, familiar emotions associated with Lightfoot. My compliments to all the contributors (even the cranky ones who force us out of our complacency and allow us to think a little harder on why we feel so strongly about the music). I've been aware of Lightfoot almost as long as my awareness of recorded music. Dad had three collections from the United Artists years on 8-track (that should date me nicely!) and I proceeded to wear them all out. I moved on to Lightfoot's then current tapes of "Don Quixote" and "Old Dan's Records", back when Canadian radio featured singles like "Beautiful" and "You Are What I Am". Picking a favourite Lightfoot song is like picking a favourite piece of clothing: some days you go for the corduroys that make you feel warm and other days the dress shirt that makes you look good... and some days you just feel like wearing your Saturday clothes. I would struggle to pick a single fave song from each of his albums but Lightfoot's oddball experiments probably dominate my current top ten: the passionate & pointed "Circle Is Small"; the rhythmic "Me & Bobby McGee"; the hoot of "Alberta Bound"; the dramatic "Farewell to Annabelle"; the spacey "Seven Island Suite"; the sexy "Slide On Over"; the cryptic "Too Many Clues"; the funny "Boss Man" (with the "Pet Sounds" backing); the tragic "Talking In Your Sleep" and the narrative "Ballad of Yarmouth Castle". No one describes being alive better than Gordon Lightfoot. Thank you for allowing me to share this fine space!

Whenever I feel lost, I put on some Gordon Lightfoot, and I feel at home, at peace, atleast in my heart for a time. Finding this site has been fun, discovering I'm not the only person who can't ever live without Gordon in my life! I've seen Gordon at Northrup Auditorium in St. Paul several times and low and behold, once I know of he came to Boise and I traveled many hours to see him. A few years after that concert and not having a chance to see him as I lived in remote central Idaho (the place that's burning up now) I wrote to him and invited him to come visit me at my little mountain cabin...we could sit around a quiet campfire, play music or just listen to the crackling fire and watch the sparks rise into black night sky. I told him I didn't think anyone in Dixie, Idaho knew who he was, so he could have a nice break from the public, just relax and I'd show him all around the mountains. Well, he never wrote back or showed up, ****! Guess he was too busy. I still live in the mountains of Idaho, but I sure miss Lake Superior and the little log cabin I once lived in on the Echo Trail outside of Ely where I would listen to Gordon, the loons and the wolves. I haven't thought of these things for so long...I didn't think anyone would understand how Gordon has touched my life...but from what I read here, you all have been touched by this gifted man.

Well, Jeff all I can say is that it has been wa-a-a-y too long since I pulled my first G.L. album from it's slip cover and sat in the dark and cried to 'I heard you talking in your sleep'...tomorrow I'm going to buy the CD. You have put a lot of work into this site...nice job. Listening to the midis took me back to my first apartment in 1970-71 on the water front of Lake Michigan in a small town a couple of hours north of Milwaukee. I saw many ships like the E. Fitzgerald that struggled to reach port on cold winter nights when the wind chill was 40 below with winds that were treacherous. Just about the time you'd hear its horn alerting the bridge tender to raise the bride you'd see the ship. The ship would make its way into port and if it was near the Holidays you'd see a few strings of Xmas lights hanging off of the smokestacks (and hanging on by a thread!) in a tree shape that someone had strung as a reminder of home. Quite a site to see at 2:00 am on a Sunday morning with frost on the window pane and icicles hanging off the ship's bow three feet thick and hanging down 15 more. Those were the days, my friend...jfm

Firstly, this is a great site. It's really FANTASTIC to read the comments of others who have not only enjoyed GL's music for years, but are deeply moved and inspired by his amazing songwriting / singing talent. I could listen to Gord tunes day in, day out, without the music growing stale. It amazes me, because I cannot say that of any other artists, even those I appreciate and enjoy. I'm almost 35 now, and have been listening to Gord since I was about 10. My brother was getting into album collecting in the '70's and purchased Summertime Dream. We were hooked, even my Dad who was blessed with a fantastic opera-quality tenor and thought modern day singers were blasphemous! Anyway, in more recent years ('93), I was privileged to see Gord at the Nat'l Arts Centre in Ottawa with my husband -- front row, center (right in front of Gord's knees!) Got to give him a high five -- high moment and great memory for me! DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET "SALUTE"? I'm missing it from my collection and would really be excited to obtain it. If you know, please email me. Well, y'all, I look forward to c****ing back to this site and reading all your wonderful comments about our much-loved GL. Bye for now! PS: has anyone c****ed out music by James Keelaghan? He's very good, and if you like Gord's stuff, I think you should c**** out some James. He's folksy and has great songwriting talent and a smooth voice (oh, and he's Canadian, too!) An older-time artist to c**** out would be Stan Rogers. He died in a plane crash, but left behind some good music to enjoy. (gee, another Canadian...hmmm...) Let me know what you think! Best to all, M.

We are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Gordon Lightfoot concert at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kansas. I have seen Gordon Lightfoot once years earlier when he played in Wichita, KS. What a performer! It was in the early 70's several years before the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. My ALL TIME FAVORITE has to be that one. I can still remember where I was the first time I heard it....on the way home from wheat harvesting in North Dakota. It had such an endearing melody...almost like the ship was calling out to you sometimes. I've been a fan since the early 70's....Can't wait to see him again next week. Peggy H.

For my birthday this year my youngest son's present was a date to see Gordon Lightfoot performing live at Wolftrap in Vienna, VA. This would be a first for me and it was one of the greatest presents I've ever received. I stumbled on this man's music, by accident, 30 years ago. I saw his name on an album, didn't have a clue who he was and bought the album because I liked his name! For the next 30 years I've collected and listened to...over and over...the works of this very gifted balladeer. Now I've also seen him perform. I still haven't come back down to earth. His onstage style is so quiet and unassuming that you get to experience his incredible musical storytelling talent without the distractions of a lot of chatter and glitz. I am truly awed. And as for this site...lots of class!

I have enjoyed Lightfoot's music for a long time. It was of interest to me to read what my favorite artist (Bob Dylan) had to say about him: "Some guys got it down-Leonard Cohen, Paul Brady, Lou Reed, secret heros-John Prine, David Allen Coe, Tom Waits, I listenmore to that kind of stuff than whatever is popular at the moment, they're not just witchdoctoring up the planet, they don't set up barriers...Gordon Light- foot, every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever." That's pretty high praise of one great artist from another great artist.

i first heard of gordon lightfoot via my home ec teacher in high school. ('81-'82) i know i was late hearing of him, but hey, it was a very small town in the midwest! i am now 36, and just got to go see him live for the first time this past tuesday. WHAT A TREAT! i was enthralled, and so glad to get to go. this man LOVES what he does...it is so obvious...even from the nosebleed seats! i can't imagine playing the same songs for years and years, and still having a good time doing it! i love minstrel of the dawn...it was my favorite song then, and it still is now. i was tickled that he sang it...thanks for making the request (this to the man in north carolina? who was going to see the concert in new york) i went to the concert at wolftrap in virginia, the night before the concert in new york. it was a mind blowing, awesome, fabulous, wonderful, lifetime gift. thank you so much.

I was a fan of GL before I'd ever heard of him. PP&M sang Early Morning Rain and That's What You Get For Loving Me on an album back in about '68. In 1970 I was struggling through university and working in an all night hamburger shop (pre McDonald's) when the radio played IYCRMM. I was hooked. The only album I could get at the time was Summer Side of Life -it started my collection. I recently finally tracked down a copy of PPT - You wouldn't believe how hard it was to get a copy in Australia. I saw GL in concert in Melbourne in May 1974. Unfortunately he hasn't been back since. You people in Nth America are certainly lucky to be able to get to live performances.

Gordon Lightfoot's music was created for listening to on a porch in the summer evenings. Or drinking beers on a snowy night. My friends and I are 25. Probably not, but you would be surprised to find how many French Canadians know and love your musique. I for 1 am a grand fan and wish to say thank-you for the songs that reach into our hearts and souls. THANKS

Mr Lightfoot: Your songs, in some way or another, touch the hearts of all!!! Of course, the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Sundown are two of my favorites, however, Race Among the Ruins has to be my favorite. "So take the best of all that is left, you know this can not be last...how true is that? Keep on singing and writing Gordon...you are the best!!!!

I had one of the most inspiring experiences of my life today. Procured some awsome seats for the "Bob Dylan - Phill Lesh" concert in Toronto. The concert was excellent but who was sitting behind me but the guy himself, ""Gordon"". He left his seat and on his way back, I presented my hand. He passed without regard..then he suddenly turned, looked me in the eyes and grabbed my hand....

I'm an ironworker for thirty some years. I been singing and playing music for another 10 years. I'm about done with the bridges and buildings. Now its time to pick up the music. I'll be singing and playing Lighfoot tunes till I'm gone. He wrote his first songs working railroad bridges with friends of mine and we've held him dear ever since. He knows honest hard work and truth and humility. God bless him.

This is one of the best done websites I have found in dealing with Gordon Lightfoot. It is well organized and easy to get around and find things. I have been a Gordon Lightfoot listener for almost 40 years and have numerous records, cassettes, and cd's of him. One thing I have always wanted to find was a poster of him? Have any ideas? As for the made for TV concert he is doing in Reno,Nevada, I understand that it will be telecasted sometime in December on PBS. Thank you for all the pictures, lyrics and information about Gordon Lightfoot. I hope he comes in concert again here in Florida.

This is a really nice website. I have been a fan of GLs since the mid 1970s. First album I ever heard of his was "Sit Down Young Stranger". Originally bought the album on LP record, and burned through it in no time at all. I bought a second one and then bought a cassette. Since then, I've gotten a little smarter. I bought it in a CD. Have most of his albums, but SDYS remains my favorite. I've seen him in concert five times. I hope hes planning another tour stop in my area, because I never tire of seeing him. Thanks for the info and the web site. JT

i knew you were all out there somewhere, fellow Lightfoot fans. I'm 27 years old and have also been listening to Lightfoot since I was in the womb. I don't know of any other artist who can capture the same observations about life and loves that he can and find the right music to highlight it. A very talented and overlooked artist that at least here will stand the test of time. Actually, I don't think I know anybody who doesn't know of his work, and can't find a song of his they know the words to. I would like to let him know how much I appreciate his music and have been inspired by it. Through my attempts to learn the guitar and also observing life, he has been a great mentor, and even though I have never met him, I consider him a friend.

I always joke with my Mother, about how she listened to too much of Gordon Lightfoot while she was pregnant with me. I'm a month short of 23 and I've been a fan of him all of my life. Sometimes I just need a feel good song to remind me of back home and my family and I'll listen to him. It reminds me of laying by the vent on a cold winter day, listening to him over and over and over again. He puts me at ease, he makes me want to dance a jig, he just plain makes me feel good. I scoff at those who haven't heard of him.. I really pity them as a matter of fact. I know he's touched my life.. And I'm very thankful for it.

I have been listening to Gordon Lightfoot since my teens (about 30 years) and fell in love with the music from the first time I heard it. Over the years his music has helped me survive the usual and not so unusual highs and lows of my life. I don't know any other singer/songwriter that has such appeal to the basics of life. It got me through boyfriend breakup's, falling in love, raising kids (Pony Man is a great lullaby), feeling happy and feeling blue for no reason. I have waited 30 years to see him in concert and I am finally going to do just that On August 25, 2000 in Denver at the Paramount Theatre. My husband and I are really looking forward to it. My husband loves the songs about the railroads, being a former brakeman and coming from a railroad family. My kids, may not like him like I do, but they respect his artistry and musical ability. He's pretty hard to beat!

I had the pleasure of meeting Gordon Lightfoot in April 1981 in Merriville Indiana. I had fabricated a small detailed replica of one of Gordon's guitars out of wood, brass, and fishing line. Pee Wee Charles took it back stage, and then invited my girlfriend and myself back to meet Gordon and the band. Another fellow and his son was there, and brought a camera. I begged him to take a picture of us with Gordon, but he refused. I still have Gordon's autograph though, and a copy of "Harry Tracy" on VHS. I would love to have a copy of the PBS Soundstage he did here in Chicago, in the late '70's. That show is what got me interested in playing the guitar, and writing songs.

Congratulations and thanks for your very thorough web-site. Although an avid record collector since the sixties, I am new to the internet and blown away by the information available on great sites such as yours. I strive at being a completist by having a copy of every Gordon Lightfoot song (need THE TWO-TONES on Chateau label); and I just learned that I am lacking a song called "Movin'" from the SUNDAY CONCERT PLUS Lp. Thanks! Considering my early exposure and interest, it has been easy being a Gordon Lightfoot fan. I was born in Orillia in 1947 and my stepmother worked for Gord Sr. who was the manager of Wagg's Laundry in Orillia. I believe Gord Sr. was very proud of his son because he would always talk about him. I remember my stepmother coming home with news of such events as Gord becoming a dancer on Country HoeDown when his single "Remember Me, I'm The One" was coming out. As a young teen I was indifferent then because my love was the R & B and DooWop on the American stations that I could tune in on the transistor radio when the sun went down. Time does lend better perspective and as I look back on the incredible music that Gord has given thus far, I feel some privilege in my loose connection to his world class talent. Enough rambling! I as well as you, look forward to the next new Gord Lightfoot song.

I have been a fan of Gordon Lightfoot since the late 60s when I first heard "If you could read my mind" . He did a few numbers on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" on British TV and I was hooked. My first "proper" date with the lady who is now my wife was at a Gordie concert at the Albert Hall. I can remember it as if it was yesterday. Since then we have seen him in concert in Cincinnati when on holiday in The States in 1980. His songs, old and new, continue to move me - even as an aging hippy. Any more albums or tours ? Keep on writing the poems. Neil and Ros Poulsom

I have worked out ones like IYCRMM, Sit Down Young Stranger and a few others. But surely there is a music book thats been published!? One I am particularly keen on is Song for a Winters Night. Bonjour Gord! When I first heard you,you where a guest at the Tommy Hunter Show. This was back in 79 or 80...I think. As you were singing "Big Steel Rail" I Turned around to my father and asked him if uncle Reg had a guitar to many.He did! I star- ted to teach myself chords.J-P a friend of mine helped me with the fingerpicking. It took a while but I stuck with it.I worked hard on that thing, being a slow learner.I`ve seen a lot of my friends learning faster than me.They "ALL" quitted. Listening to your music over the years thaught {I hope I spell it right} me to appreciate all kinds of music, especially the arrangements. You do not Know me,but taught me a lot. When I go back to see my folks in Temiscaming I like to sit near the lake and listen to the loons singing the intro of"Whispers of the North".When I hear"Carefree Highway"on the radio,I have to pull over to the side of the road. One of my favorite songs is "Don't Beat Me Down".I can relate to it. When I play music in church on Sunday morning, I thank "God"...and Gordon Lightfoot. But don`t tell anyone, please. Salut! Dan. P.S. Je salut tous les fans francophones.

I've been a fan for about 20 years. I took a year of guitar lessons and am mostly self-tought. I just like to play around the house. I was just on a fishing charter out of Lexington, MI in Lake Huron and the Arthur M Anderson rolled past. Being a BIG fan of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I thought I had seen a ghost and my heart fell to my stomach. I immediately thought of GL and the memories I had as a kid, trying to play his songs and I felt like I saw a long lost friend. I've only had my computer for about a month and thinking of this story I searched the web. This is the first Site I actually explored. I think it's great. Thanks for the lyrics and chords, I'm sure this will clear up a lot of confusion.

Mr. Lightfoot; I doubt that you will read this personally and that's fine by me. I hope that at least one of your assistants will at least read this and give you a summary. Sir; I first heard your gifted tongue in 1966 while I was living in Goose Bay Labrador.(BRRRRRR!!!!) I was 13 and I fell in love with the cords you were using. Do you know there are people in this world calling themselves instrumentalists; but when I asked them to play one of your songs they all made a face and said your chords were too difficult to play. I had never even laid eyes on you until your concert at Spirit Mountain casino in Oregon 2000.(P.S. you put on a great show except for the fact that you have to change instruments too often. SORRY.) My wife pointed that out as well; and Sir I converted her into one of your biggest fans as well. I had never seen you in person before but I was extremely happy with your selection and performance!!! I look forward to your next album no matter how long it takes because the wait is always well worth it. Please keep in your mind always that you are LOVED and APPRECIATED always. Good health to you and keep the wind at your back.

When I first started playing guitar, Gordon (and other fingerpickers such as James Taylor, John Denver & Paul Simon) influenced me PROFOUNDLY. In particular, IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND,DON QUIXOTE, OLD DAN'S RECORDS and SUNDOWN were always in my 8-track player (to give you an idea of when that was!) I continue to play music professionally, and acoustic fingerpicking is still my first love. I recently acquired Gordon's SONGBOOK boxed set which sent me back to dig up many of my old albums and tapes, and I was amazed to remember how many of Gordon's songs I have actually covered over the years. His work is still unsurpassed, and I am very proud to cite his influence on my own music. Gordon, you're the greatest!

I remain a life long fan of Gordon. A professional musician of many years have played many of his songs in the UK, Norway,Hong Kong Singapore, Ireland and the Scottish Isles. Met some family friends of Gordons on the Isle of Skye who sent me his life story..and what a story! Here in England it's always been hard to get hold of information about Gordon. I would love to see some video's of concerts or interviews. Never made it to Canada but recently thought of doing a tribute tour here in the UK of his songs as it seems unlilely he'll make it back over here? Seen him whenever he's been here. Would love to hear from people who could help out with info/contacts etc. Do contact me here in the English Lakes as I'm, not your "ordinary man"(fan)!

What a wonderful place to go. I too have been a long time fan, since 1970. It was "If You Could Read My Mind" that caught my attention. I still remembering hearing it for the first time. I have obtained all availavle LP's, 8 tracks, casettes and now CD's. I am so looking forward to the four WB archives CD's to come out, Salute, Shadows, Dreamstreet Rose and Old Dan's Records that will complete my collection. If anyone knows where I can obtain some pre-United Artist stuff let me know. I would like to hear the Two Tones. I have seen several concerts and met Gord back stage of the Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Yea, we like him in Texas, too. I now live in Oklahoma and he doesn't make this area very often. Would like to catch another concert. I look forward to hearing from any other fan.

I was one of the lucky 1,480 people to see Gordon at the Pioneer Theatre in Reno on April 19,2000.This concert was taped for a PBS special to be aired in December or January. I could go on for hours about what an incredible concert it was but it's all been said before and probably much more eloquently. Here is the song list from the concert. First set---Sea of Tranquility,Don Quixote, I'll Prove My Love, In My Fashion, Beautiful, The House You Live In, Sundown, Carefree Highway,Restless, Ghosts of Cape Horn, Blackberry Wine, Medley--For Lovin'Me/Did She Mention My Name, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Second set--- Waiting for You, Hey You, Rainy Day People, Shadows, If You Could Read My Mind, A Painter Passing Through, Make Way For the Lady, Early Morning Rain, Baby Step Back, Song For A Winter's Night, Canadian Railroad Trilogy. First encore--- Old Dan's Records. Second encore--- Cold On the Shoulder. It's easy to see why Gordon picked this concert hall for the taping of his PBS special. The acoustics were perfect. The songs actually sounded better live than on CD. (and I was sitting in the upper balcony in the last row) The audience was very, very, very appreciative and except for a couple of 'loudmouths' shouting requests, very respectful of the Master Singer/Songwriter. I did everything I could to get a backstage guest pass for after the concert but it was explained to me numerous times by numerous people that due to the nature of the concert the guest list was very limited.(Mostly honchos from PBS and CBC) I did manage to meet Gordon's equipment truck driver (Bill from Tennesee)and Gordon's private pilot(Joe from Ontario) Both of these gentlemen were kind and very gracious to my wife Cindy and I. Joe was kind enough to take a note from me on a page that had a copy of a picture of Gordon and I, a ticket stub with Gordon's autograph and a backstage guest pass from a concert at Billy Bob's Texas, May 24,1987, which was the tenth time I had seen Gordon in concert. My note thanked Gordon for 30+ years of great music. I also gave a note to someone important looking to pass to Barry (Gordon's business manager) requesting a backstage guest pass for the concert in Denver on August 25,2000. Hopefully I'll have better luck next time. I can hardly wait for the PBS special and a chance to buy a copy of the tape of the concert. I will always remember that magical night in Reno.

I just got home from the Easter Eve 2000 concert in Thousand Oaks, Ca. WOW! I have listened and loved Gordon's music since the early seventies, but this is the first time I have seen him live. I play guitar and his music has influenced my style greatly. In 1975 my girlfried at that time broke up with me by saying, "I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back". It just makes you want to cry all over again. In the summer of 1974 I worked at King's western wear in Van Nuys, Ca. Gordon had ordered a custom Levi blue workshirt. It had studs on the front of the shoulders in the shape of musical notes on the scale. Across the back was a large guitar also made from studs. I used to look at all of his album covers to see if he was wearing it. I never did see it though. I wonder if he remembers it. It's nice to be able to share this with you.

Without doubt the finest songwriter/singer/poet and musican of all time. I have never heard him sing without be able to see a picture. "If you could read my mind" is possibly the best love song ever written, and yet it is more than that.I have followed His music since the sixties and his music is timeless. He is the painter, the story teller, who has something meaningful to say. He is simply awesome and real. Canada must be really proud of Him

I have liked Gordon Lightfoot's music for some time now. The first song i really liked was "Poor Little Allison". I like listening to the stories portrayed in his songs. Every song seems to have characters and events and it is so fun to figure what he's trying to say. I especially like "Don Quixote" and "Circle of Steel". One is a funny story and one is quite sad. Gordon - If you even read these comments; I don't think I remember just how I discovered your music, cuz me being a furly old fart myself, it must have been just after they invented the wheel .. *G* ... but I've been playing guitar since about 195 *cough, cough ain't sayin'* .. But I got a couple of your song books as they came out, and have really actually loved playing the songs in them (forgetting the capo usually) .. Since I hadn't heard your version of most of them I would, and still do, come up with a bunch of varied interpertations .. You taught me a lot Bro' and I got a few tunes that I think might even make you proud ... Thank You Sir! Ya just don't know how many hours of personal enjoyement I've gotten from playing through those books .. and yup .. I done chewed the covers off both of 'em!!!

Gordon Lightfoots music has been a part of my life for over 30years, since getting turned on to his music in high school. Anyone who appreciates his music knows that once you take it inside yourself, your hooked for your lifetime. I saw him this past Sat. evening at SUNY Purchase, and it was one of the best . The variety of the music, quality of the band and the clearness of Gordon's voice was a joy. As the years have passed he has gotten more verbal with the audience and it really lends more intimacy and a connection to people who may just be getting to know the man and his music. I have lost track of how many times I have seen him live, and I hope I continue to do so. If you love the music and you haven't yet seen the band live, treat yourself, you'll be so very happy you did. Thanx for a place where Gord fans can connect!!!!

I have been searching high and low for the biography book on you. I looked at every book store in Toronto, and you'd only believe it if you wre me, there was none any where. Please let me know where I can get one ASAP. I would also like to tell you that I also sing in Music Festivals, and only started getting first place prizes when i sing your music. This year I am singing Sundown, however my favourite piece is Rainy Day People because I can relate to the song. Real friends and lovers are always there for you to lend a hand or a tear.

I first became a fan of GL in 1977. My then girlfriend and I were on our way to her parents cabin in Wisc and she put Summertime Dream in the cassette player in the car.I have been hooked ever since. I love the range and variant styles that Gordon has shown us over the years. The lyrics are truly phenomanol. His music has seen me through many a good time and bad. He has truly touched my life with his music. Please come back in concert in Minneapolis Gord..Thanks again

Gordon, do you remember the night at the Troubadour in Santa Monica. Harry Chapin was the main act, he saw you in the audience and asked if you would like to come up and sing a few songs. You sat your glasses down on the stool, grabbed a guitar and sang a few songs. Blew us all away as usual. Harry came back up on stage and immediately sat down on your glasses! This always puts a smile on my face. Hope it did on yours. What I don't think you know is Chapin sat down at my table while you did your solo. You should have seen the way this great story teller watched and listened to you with total respect. When he got back up, he had his band sit down while he did a few solos. Thank you for memories lasting over 25 years. Looking forward to seeing you in Reno April 19th.

"Sundown" was the Gordon Lightfoot recording that got me hooked on his music. I was only 12 at the time it became a hit over here in Germany but I have been following his career ever since. I own of all Gordon´s efforts (I think), including the beautiful 4 CD collection issued last year. His music has been a part of my life for more than 25 years now, and it is some of the best ever put to tape. Thanks for a beautiful website, by the way.

If you saw me on the street you would probably think that I had no idea who Gordon Lighfoot is at all, but i just love his music. I started listening to it about 2 years ago and when I put it in the reel-to-reel (yes the albums were on a reel-to-reel) and listened to it, I was a fan for life. I listen to the albums all the time (especially at work, I work in a camping resort called Clay's Park in Northeastern Ohio, and it just seems to go with the territory.

23 years ago I moved to Duluth MN. It was the beginning of June and on the hot summer days that followed I discovered Gordon Lightfoot. Sitting at the edge of Lake Superior with my guitar and watching the big ore ships slide past, I played along as Gordon's music drifted from my car stereo out across the big water. I don't suppose anyone heard us. No walkers on that stretch of beach and the sailors too far away to notice a boy filled with the joys of music and imagination. We had some times together, Gordon and I. A hand full of north shore agates, battered songbooks, and worn out vinyl are the earthly remains of that summer. But the 16-year old boy lives on and the music drifting across time, still fills him with joy and fond memories! "It's time for a summertime dream." Thanks for everything, Gordon.

He seems like such a nice and humble guy (esp. when he sang, "A Painter Passing Through). The accoustics in this 125 year old music hall were superb and the band was great, too. Sang "The Wreck," IYCRMM, SUNDOWN, RDP, CAREFREE HIGHWAY, CRT, WAITING FOR YOU, THE PONY MAN, EMR, SFWN, DID SHE MENTION MY NAME AND MANY MORE! If you find him in your area -- go to see him!

Discovered Gordie's music in '73 when visiting Toronto and listening to a radio special on his career --- which also promoted his Massey Hall concert series. When I became a Radio DJ, I made every effort get management to add Lightfoot tunes to the playlist. I was successful most of the time. Seen him in concert at least a dozen times. Favor Lightfoot tune --- "House you live in" from Summertime Dream. Great way to meet life. The Z-Man.

I have been a big fan of Gordon's since as I long as I can remember. My father got me hooked on his music at a very young age. Some of my favorites are Sundown, Carefree Highway, Alberta Bound, If You Could Read My Mind, and of course since being from Michigan, my all time favorite is The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Let me tell you it was bonechilling to go up to Whitefish Point and see the memorials people have made for some of the 29 men that perished on the Edmund Fitzgerald. I immediately felt goose bumps and seeing the Bell especially in the museum brought tears to my eyes. If you haven't been there it's a great place to go.

I find it terribly difficult to express my great enthusiasm for and love of Gordon's music in a succinct fashion. He simply provides a soundtrack to my life. So many of his songs have meaning for me, especially "Beautiful", which my wife and I first danced to at our wedding. "Carefree Highway" makes me wistful for the road and for my native land in the deserts of Arizona (love the picture in the Songbook hardcover with G.L. standing by the Carefree Hwy road sign- I've been by it more times than I can count). There are so many others, as well("Shadows", "A Lesson in Love", "IYCRMM", "The Circle is Small", "Endless Wire", "Protocol", "14kt Gold", "I'm Not Sayin'/Ribbon of Darkness", "Can. RR Trilogy", etc.,etc.). It is truly wonderful to see that his music still endures within the hearts of so many. Much appreciation for this very fine site! --- CAM

Both my father and I have been 'Gordy' fans for more than ten years now. Personally I love the imagery that each song conjours up; you could read any of his lyrics as poetry. The guitar melodies and musical arrangements are excellent, particuarly those in the Seventies. It seems that Gordons music is becoming better know in the UK where 'If you could read my mind' was popular around Valentines Day! Does anyone know if there is a comprehensive guitar tab and chords songbook? Cheers, Niall (Scottish fan club dept.)

to David. I saw your question about the Canadian Railroad Trilogy. I know the answer for a couple of reasons, the main reason is from a conversation with Gord myself. It refers to the structure of the song. Listen to it again and see what I mean. Part 1: There was a time in this great land when the railroad did not run../..bu;t time has no beginings and history has no bounds../..when the young mans fancy had turned into the spring... part 2: They; looked in the future and what did they see?.../ Part 3: Behind the blue rockies.../... we are the navvies who work on the railroad... (and then a repeat of the themes in the other parts..etc.) David, I hope that helps, good luck on your project. Other lightfoot songs for a history project can be: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,.. Ghosts of Cape Horn,.. My last letter was sent last week, friday febuary 11. take a look there David. Also, make a quick note to let me know you got this message. I'm only 13, but my dad got me hooked on Gordon Lightfoot (his records) when I was 4. He just bought "Summertime Dream" on CD, though I memorized it from the record. I love Gordon Lightfoot's music; there's always a song to fit my mood, to lift me up, or to make me cry. I don't know what I'd do without it! He has been a standing "figure" in our house, and I miss his music (GL withdrawl) when I'm away at camp. THANK YOU GORDON LIGHTFOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I have been an avid fan of Gordon Lightfoot since my days spent in Ontario Canada in the late sixties. He is simply the best most prophetic, and meaningful folk singer of all time. His music is an absolute pleasure to listen to, he is undoubtedly the most talented musician I have ever heard and a credit to Canada and all Canadians.

I am a huge lightfoot fan. I own all the albums, including the old U.A. albums of Gords early years. Some rare ones also, like "sit down young stranger" then the blank front cover, then when they finally called it "If you could read my mind". I have seen gord in concert 16 times at different venues since 1972. I have been back stage after shows many times and have even been invited with others, to the hotel after for late night jams on the guitars with gord, terry and the gang, and have heard alot of personal stories. Gord is a great guy, and is as genuine and interesting as his music. I am a siger songwriter, and I perform out frequently, always including Gords songs in my sets. Infact, I have a Lightfoot tribute band and have found that the crowds love it. I play alot of his songs! (Told I sound & look like him too) If anyone is interested to hear a Gord story or whatever I might know, ask. I'll try to respond about weekly. If you want to know my club dates, or come hear me sing Lightfoot....let me know. Next gig is TOP HAT LOUNGE...ST. PAUL MN. ...134 E. 5TH STREET 651.228.1347 ...FRI. FEB 18 8:30 TO 12:30 .

I've been listening to Gordon Lightfoot ever since I can remember. My folks were big fans and they tell me I've been to one of his concerts in Cincinnati when I was 3 or 4 (23 years ago!) When I was younger I used to cry everytime I heard "Circle of Steel" - my eyes still well up today. Listening to Gord today brings back special memories. I introduced my wife to his music when we first got together, and Gord's Gold accompanied us on our first vacation together to Maine. I can't hear "Carefree Highway" now without thinking about the drive to Acadia National Park. His music has influenced my own musical talents and I've shared and performed his songs to many people in my local music community. And now that I know he's coming close to me I want to go see him in concert so I can remember it!

I first found Gordon Lightfoot when I was 15, and working in a record store in Chico, Ca. I can remember my mother asking me about what I know of him since she had just heard him on the radio. She sent me to the record store and I purchased three of his albums. Lightfoot, Sunday Concert and Sit Down Young Stranger. We gave them a listen and instantly those albums became mine. My mother saw them again. Since then, I have been a die-hard fan. I see him whenever he is on tour in my area.

When I was a child I heard "The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on the radio but I was too young understand the meaning of it until a few months ago I saw a documentary about the ship. From that documentary it sparked me into wanting to acquire the song. So I went and bought "Gords gold volume II" sat and listened to it and now I am new fan . Also it is the kind of music I have been looking for, something serene to escape from the everyday doldrums. Thank you.

In the early 1980's, I reluctantly took a job with the Michigan Department Of Corrections. As I began to deal with the stress of the job, I searched for truth and beauty in anything I could experience. Prisons are devoid of beauty and are cesspools of ignorance, brutality and negativity. Gordon Lightfoot showed me compassion, nostalgia and love through the beautiful images his lyrics conjure. I found delightful escape in his words of wisdcom, instructions for how to turn a shoulder to the cold winds of life. I thank you for the beauty you have brought to my soul and the warmth you have given this man's life and the emotional tools to deal with bigotry, intolerance, hatred and inhumanity of a life spent unwillingly in corrections.

Gord allready know's this but i'll share it w/ you.I first heard Gord sing on a small tape recorder in a u.s. army hospital in japan in 1969 while recovering from a gunshot wound during the v n war. I don't recall the song, but i remember very clearly to this day how i felt. I was very depressed and lonely...and young. My spirits were immediately lifted. I felt a great need to hear more but soon was shipped back to the combat zone. I never forgot the feeling. Several months later when i got out of the service i began a search for this man and his poetry. I had no idea what so ever how to go about it but eventually found him in concert on the west coast. I followed him and his music throught the 70's and 80's until early 90's when i finally had the pleasure of meeting him at pine knob in mich. It was truely a dream come true. We talked back stage for an hour. The first thing i said to him was " Gord, we've been friend's for many years, but just met each other." I have since developed a close, trusted friendship. He has carried me through many dark, lonely, terrifying, long nites during those years after the war. In addition to being gentle and kind, a man who looks you in the eye and let's you know he cares about what you have to say. He is considered by most of his fellow artists and the experts in the music industry, to be the greatest singer, song writer of the century. I couldn't agree more. He has saved my emotional, and maybe physical life more than once. Knowing him as i do, has been one of the greatest expiriences of my entire life. Allthough he is now 61 years old, he will continue to evolve and enlighten me for a long time to come. Gord, thank you for what you have done for my life for so very long. I value your friendship more that you could ever imagine. God bless you...good man (sit down young young stranger, and tell me who you are)

I've been a "Lighthead" since the first time I heard "The Last Time I Saw Her Face" back in 1971. I learned to play the guitar by singing and playing along with the albums. The first time I had a chance to see "the man" was when I was living in Boulder, Colorado and was so impressed with the talent. And he sang just about everything that night...including Leroy Van Dyke's "The Auctioneer" which was fantastic. He is truely the best!

This is a great site. I'm so happy I found it and the other Lightheads with whom I have so much in common. I think I first heard Gord in '72 or so when Sundown was released. He's been number one ever since. I am fortunate to live near Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) and to have seen Gord in concert several times, including the concert where he tried and he tried but he just couldn't continue because of personal problems. It was quite upsetting to see such a consummate artist and performer in what was obviously considerable pain. I also travelled to hear him in Tanglewood, MA, ALONE on a bus full of strangers when I was only 17! I'm happy to say that my husband and I are going to see Gord in concert at the Troy Music Hall in Troy, New York on March 5 !!!!!! Anyhow, I listen to either Gord's Gold or the Sundown tape whenever I need soothing and a quick transport back to those happier days of youth. Thanks for listening and also for a great site!

Gordon Lightfoot must run on a certain popular brand of battery given the fact that nothing seems able to stop him from producing fine music time and again. It seems that he has always been in my world, and I am the luckier for the experience. Thank you GL. As for the website, which I came to on a whim looking for the lyrics to "Edmund Fitzgerald": a very well organized and attractive site, with everything but the kitchen sink in it, all beautifully relevant. It always warms my heart to see current comments from old and new fans of Gord. This means he is still kicking and appreciated. This earth would be a sad place without him and his songs to get me through every day, and bring back many fond memories of decades past and the "times of my life". (Wow, getting sentimental here. Sorry.) All I can say, if you know someone who isn't familiar with Gord, introduce them to, say, "Beautiful", "Now and Then", "Is There Anyone Home?", "Tattoo", "Does Your Mother Know?", "Can't Depend on Love" for the mystical, romantic side of Gord I love best. Here's to him, and many more (songs, years, concerts...all of the above.) Thanks Gord!

For Gordon Lightfoot or anyone: Could you or anyone give me any more information on the Yarmouth Castle That Gordon sang about in his ballad. The only thing I know is that it was a passenger liner which grossed 5,002 tons. On November 13, 1965 while underweigh from Miami to Nassau, she burned and sank NorthWest of Providence Island near Great Stirrup Cay. Her skipper was Byron Voutsinas. It previously was named "Evangeline". I have not found any other information on the web. Any other information would be appreciated. This shipboard stuff kind of in my blood, as I have been told that I was the fifth consecutive generation of the Thompson family to make a career of the sea. (That is what someone said they found in the Maritime Museum records in Manitowoc, Wisconsin).

what can I say, Gordon has thrilled me to the stars and back, his music is daunting, exciting, challenging ,amazing, and real, so damned real, and I have adored it since I was a lot younger than I am now. Living in New Zealand has its drawbacks, I know Iam never ever likely to see him live, but I will always hold a wish that he might come here. My favourite song is "the house you live in" closely followed by a zillion others! I would love to correspond with any fans here in NZ. The site here is really great too, thanks for all the work you have done on it, I will tell all my friends about it. Bye for now.

I've been an admirer of Lightfootfor longer than I like to recall and was really thrilled to find your great website. It's good to know you're all out there and if you ever read this, Gord, will you please come and play London again - soon? We're waiting for you. Would love to hear from any other GL fan who feels like getting in touch. Let's keep the Master's name and music in the news.

Great website. I've been a fan since 1969 and the live Sunday Concert. Once was lucky enough to see him perform in person. Hope the chance comes again.

I'm no longer a Young Stranger, but I've been a fan since I first heard the live Sunday Concert Album in the late 1960s. Gordon is one of the great songwriters of our generation, and "Songbook" is a terrific addition to anyone's collection.

Gordon, I just love all the songs I've heard on your records over the years. I think 'Sundown' with the combination of the sound of your voice, the music and the words is really sensual. Have you ever been to Ireland? If you intend coming at any time I would love to know about it. Every good wish for the new year. Joan Barry.

I've been listening to GL since the late sixties. In times of trials and tribulations,he got me through them. "Song for a Winter's Night" has been my favorite for years. I have seen him several times in concert and hope to again. Any chance of coming to Austin, TX? Thanks to you GL for being able to sing your life experiences and emotions in such a profound way. DC
