Default East York Choir presents Song for a Winter's Day

Excerpts only. Full article at: http://www.insidetoronto.com/news/Ne.../article/33640

"The East York Choir is presenting a Song for a Winter's Day concert on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. at Eastminster United Church."

...

"The second half of the concert will feature an eclectic mix of selections including several by Canadian composers and arrangers.

Guest artists for this half of the concert will be Charlie Roby and Paul Bartlett. Roby, an English folk, roots and world musician, is a recording artist and has performed several times with the East York Choir.

Bartlett is currently studying with Red Shea, who for many years was Gordon Lightfoot's premier guitarist in studio and on tour."

--- end of quoted text ---

Paul was the fellow who was playing along with the "regulars" at the Delta Chelsea on Saturday. He was quite some guitar player (not just my opinion, but also that of the other guitar players), but was happy just playing from his seat and not taking a central role.

No, I'm stuck in Colorado still. Don't go east until the end of next week. Thank you for responding. I sometimes wonder why I bother posting anything, as half my posts seem to get no response at all. People sometimes seem more interested in jokes and games than in what I think is interesting news. Oh well. I guess what I find interesting is not always interesting to others.

I would have thought that many of the people who were in Toronto in November, 2006, would have been interested that one of "our" jammers was appearing locally. Even Char didn't seem to think it was interesting, and she could have gone. It's over now.

Even the fact that the performance was named after a Gord song, seems to have escaped everybody (including the writer, I would say).

Oh well. I enjoyed reading it. I exchanged emails with Paul's brother who said, "Yes, that's the bro". Paul takes a lesson from Gord and doesn't even have a computer.

Val, I'm not sure who Paul was. - I'd have to check the pictures I have. There were some people in the room on Saturday and Sunday that I didn't know and I was busy with the raffle as well.

The church concert was an event I didn't plan on attending as I had other plans this past weekend.

BTW - I am at least 40 minutes east of Toronto by car in good weather and traffic conditions and I don't have a car. Any trips I take into Toronto are big undertakings that entail a lot of time and scheduling because they are taken via taxis, trains, subways, streetcar and buses thru a couple of different transit systems and can be quite costly.

I tend to limit my trips to things more Lightfoot oriented and easier to get to. Especially in winter weather..

Add in the fact that this weekend we had, and are still having horrendous weather in and around Toronto, I'm not sure that anyone other than those close to the church would have attended. All of my plans were cancelled and the only thing I did outside this past weekend is shovel snow and ice, and salt my property.

And for me personally, while it is interesting that he was at our Saturday jam sessions and plays guitar with Red Shea, it wasn't enough to get me to attend the church concert with all of the inherent planning, time and cost and the other things I had planned.

However I do hope he attends the May 2008 Massey shows and is once again a part of any jam sessions that may take place.

I enjoyed reading about the church event and I too have had posts (even with significant Lightfoot news) where some people I thought would reply, didn't, altho practically everyone else did....

Well, here there was almost silence. And of course I didn't expect you to go necessarily, but I guess I thought you'd say something. I know that you are busy, and I wasn't directing my frustration at you. It just does seem that the games, jokes, images and puzzles are more interesting to the majority of people. I suppose that's for them to decide!

I'll crawl back into my hole now. I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining about you. You do so much for everyone, and I am very aware of that. Please accept my apologies if I seemed to be beating you up. I didn't mean it!

Can I crawl in with you cuz we're getting MORE snow!
lol

I find that when I check the papers/on-line there are SO many concerts and events I'd like to attend in and around Toronto that I have to pick and choose carefully according to transportation and time and cost and desire to do all of that stuff to see a particular performer etc.

I'm sure a lottery win will solve all of those problems tho!

Val,

I read everything you post. I'm guilty of not responding much and I will work on that. I have high interest in real Lightfoot news and Lightfoot related news, etc. I have low interest in quiz posts, contest posts, etc. and no interest whatsoever in fantasy posts, etc. but I understand that many people enjoy them.

So keep up the good work and continue to share with us. As they say in the rehab meetings "thanks for sharing Val" !

Bill

Wow! Thank you so much. I had not thought to look for it on You Tube (did you notice the "Special thanks to Red Shea" in the posted description?).

Very beautiful version and the guitar work was exceptional. I do remember Paul from the sessions we had and took note that he knew what he was doing on the guitar. Very nice man as well. If I recall he accompanied us in the restaurant after the concert and we played on till the wee hours. It sure was a fun time and I am so looking forward to doing it all again at the next Toronto gig. Ron Jones.

I got to doing a little searching on the Internet Movie Database sit, and just for the fun of it I looked Gordon up. One of the things that found was that the song appeared on the soundtrack for the 1994 version of Miracle On 34th Street. Now how cool can that be?

Hey Valerie,

Two questions:

{1} Is Paul Bartlett the guy in Red or black ?

{2} Why is it called, "Song for a Winter's Day ?

I think Paul is the guy on the left. But I only met him that one day in Toronto. Char, he and his brother were at the table with me at dinner, sitting across from me and John. Do you have the pictures handy?

As for the name, I think it was a play on the name of the song; making it different from the song, and as a nod to the season.
