In additon to all the hits (Sundown, The Wreck, Carfree Highway, IYCRMM), I'd imagine: The Pony Man, Hi'way Songs, Rainbow Trout, Christian Island, and The Patriots Dream.

I usually just put on the Don Quixote CD and just play it straight through and see what happens.

Gosh Chris... you took most of my picks! :D

Well, actually what I would do is go back to square one and start in '66 with "Lightfoot" and go all the way up to "Harmony". (Not in one day of course. )

I think starting in the middle or end is a bit confusing.

Chris,

I did this for real about a year or so ago.

I made a cassette tape for a friend and I left all the "hits", songs she would know, off the tape.

I put together about 25 songs, basically in chronological order, that I thought she would like. I mixed up the styles somewhat and she was surprised by some of Gord's more blues/jazz sounds. Stuff like, "Make Way for the Lady," "Slide on Over," etc.

I included some of the love songs and ballads and some of his sea stories.

She may not buy any more of his stuff, but I know she listens to the tape.

Well, that's easy. IYCRMM, Sundown, Carefree Highway... all the ones which made him a chart-topper.

I would give them a copy of Gord's Gold. If I made them a tape or CD, I would intersperse the hits and the more upbeat songs with the ballads.

I recently intro'd a friend via "Live In Reno". My lady friend was impressed by his depth of meaning and simplicity of presentation.

Well, you can't buy it anymore because it's out of print. But Gord's Gold is a great way to introduct someone to Lightfoot.

I'm referring to Gord's Gold 1. There may be a few stragglers in some of the more obscure stores, but they're pretty well sold out, and they're not manufacturing any more.

Well when 12 String Mike introduced me to Gord- he played Gord's Gold I. I think Sundown was my first favorite Gord song.

I would certainly include "not supposed to care." Others would be Circle of Steel, Cherokee Bend, and Cotton Jenny. That combination shows a versatility and diverse group of subjects, emotions and skill. There is such a large body of work to choose from, how could it be narrowed down without feeling like something very relavent has been left behind? It is all good! Gord's music has stood the test of time quite well. Valerie
