Sunday Concert and the United Artists albums

I am constantly amazed at the number of fans here who express a lack of knowledge
of the fabulous Sunday Concert live album and indeed of all the early United Artists albums.As one who was fortunate to have been in the right place in 1966 and heard enough of Gord on Montreal Radio that year to seek out and buy the "Lightfoot" album before that year was out and then bought each new release as soon as possible even when back home in the U.K. I still recall the wonderful selection of songs on those 5 UA albums with the greatest affection.
Anybody yet to hear the likes of Changes; Mountains and Marian; Affair on Eighth Avenue;
Apology to name a few is really missing out .They are essential to all fan's collections IMHO
Luckily there seem to be a number of outlets who still have a seemingly inexhaustible pile of the "Canadian" 3 cd set and there is nearly always one or more on offer at Ebay
at a common starting bid of US$ 14.93 or "buy it now" for US$ 16.93 both plus a modicum of shipping of course

This "original" 3-CD set "The United Artists Years" comprises
all 5 UA albums and has an excellent 12-page stapled booklet enclosed.This compares to the US 2-cd issue "The United Artists Collection" also often on ebay

this has a fold-out brochure rather than the stapled booklet although it does
contain the identical text and largely the same photos and similarly includes a description of Sunday Concert but only has the 49 tracks from the first 4 UA albums.
If you get that set you can then buy Sunday Concert either as "SC live" or the better Bear family Sunday Concert Plus
which has an extra 5 tracks viz:-
A cover of Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues"
the "Nashville" version of "Spin Spin" a much neglected recording that was my personal introduction to Country and Lightfoot in 1966
2 versions of "Movin"
and an alternative take of "I'll be Allright" ( another of my early favourites)
amazon has that too for US$18.98

It's funny you should mention that UA collection John. I just bought it about a week and 1/2 ago and mine only covers the 4 studio albums,yet in the fold-out it shows a picture of Sunday Concert!

I wasn't exactly dissapointed but now that I've seen your description of what was in it when it came out in '93,I know mine is a later copy. Still,it is great to be able to have all 4 60's lp's on 2 CD's. I have them on vinyl of course but now I wont wear those out and they can stay in the good condition I bought them in. I still need to get a somewhat better copy of Sunday Concert,I got mine at Goodwill and it's O.K. but I know a record store on the other side of town that has much better copies. They're a bit pricey though,so I can only get it when frugal to do so. Anyone out there that doesn't know that Lightfoot existed before 1970,get this collection or hunt down the vinyl LP's! Either way,it's worth it! Even $18 for<"The Way I Feel"! It's been the B! Catch ya on the flipside of Sundown!

I couldn't agree more. Sunday Concert is essential to the collection. Like many of his albums I feel this one needs to be played whole to get the full effect. As for the other UA albums suffice to say that you really need to get them all and of course listen to them. Wherever a person started on Lightfoot, unless lucky like you from 1966, they have to go all the way back and all the way forward to get the full picture and sound that makes Lightfoot who he is today. I would rate Sunday Concert near the top for my "desert island" picks, LOL.

I am going to sound like an echo here, here, here, but I couldn't agree more with my esteemed co-posters. I became enamored of Lightfoot when the IYCRMM and SSOL albums got their radio play here in the ol'US of A. About 6 years later when from my mother's apron strings I did pass and got my own place...one of my indulgences was to go to the local music store and order all the albums still attainable from 1978 back that I didn't already have. At first I was told they all were...then I got a phone call that said some were out of stock and out of print. I was disappointed but vowed to be content with those I could get. Imagine my joy when I went to pick up the package and all the albums were there! I have fond memories of that first autumn (the time of year best suited for Lightfoot music IMHO) in my own place and losing myself in his music every night after work and all weekend long. Sunday Concert remains my favorite Lightfoot album to this day and like BillW, it would be the first thing packed for that deserted island stay.

I just received Sunday Concert Plus the other day from Amazon, and I love it. I highly recommend having it in your collection. I love the pictures in the little booklet included, as well as the prose written so beautifully.

Hi folks! Just got in (the library) from record hunting. I took the bus about 3 or 4 miles west to a store I frequently visit called Karma. I wasn't really hunting for any GL but I did put on hold a copy of "The Very Best Of GL". It has a pastellish animated cover and was released in 1975. I bought other LP's today and wanted to take Gord's with me but it cost more than the other 3 and so I decided to wait on it. Also,just so waiting for the bus and traveling wouldn't be a drag,I took discs 2-3 and 4 from Songbook with me. I'd have taken 1 also but I've been listening to the UA collection quite a lot since I got it. Which leads me to Bill W's statement about going back to '66 and before if one were to begin to take an intrest in Gordon's music. Personally,if I were just starting to hear about GL and wanted to know more,I'd jump in head first and get Songbook. Which except for GG1,Sundown,COTS,Summertime Dream, Endless Wire and IYCRMM,is exactly what I did. To each his own though.

It's been me and I'll catch ya on the flipside of Sundown!

But I am pleased that several others share my enthusiasm for the UA albums (even if Gord doesn't!!)

I think I need to explain the shameless self promotion thing.
You know how we musicians like to record and share our music with each other? Well, a few weeks ago, I went to alt.music.paul-simon and posted about my recording of Kathy's Song. I mostly talked about what a good song it is, and how much trouble I had recording it, then told them to feel free to listen to it on my website. Wow! There were a couple of guys who really didn't like that! I got accused of shameless self promotion. Right, like I was going to get a lot of $$$ for letting 15 Paul Simon fans listen to one song. Anyway, it got a little nasty before it was all overwith and since then, a few of us have been joking around about it.
This had never happened to me in all my Internet travels. Most music sites share music. That's what music is for... sharing. A couple of these guys acted like they owned the PS newsgroup, and maybe even owned Paul himself.

Over at DorothyL, a mystery discussion site for fans, it's called BSP for Blatant Self-Promotion and is tolerated in modest amounts (e.g. adding the title and ISBN of your latest book in your sig file.) This group has about 3000 members, all mystery fans and including some mystery authors, some who post, some who lurk. It's a moderated list, and Diane Kovacs and Kara Robinson (aka Harriet Vane and Danger Mouse) keep a pretty tight handle on folks trying to sneak full-scale ads onto the list. They can and do bar offenders from posting anything further. This helps keep marketers from gumming up the works and distracting from the main point of the list which is to share favorite stories or authors or ask technical whodunnit-type/howdunnit-type questions. Posters are pretty tolerant, but as I said, they know they have the moderators keeping a sharp eye on things, so it stays civil and on topic most of the time.

And as for 'on topic' - I love Sunday Concert. I have the original in vinyl and Sunday Concert Plus on CD. I never get tired of hearing it.

Well, I can see the need to have a moderator control a group like that. However, amps is a public group. They should take the good with the bad. Actually, the group has a lot of very nice people, but there are a couple irritating individuals. Maybe I should suggest they go to the BPS site and volunteer to become monitors.

Sunday Concert Plus is one of my most frequently played Lightfoot CDs. I love the live sound and audience interaction.

Gwen,are you checking out oldies record stores? If not,that's your best bet. I know you wont find it in yard sales or Goodwill/Salv. Army. I do know that it's nowhere to be found here in Phx. ! After my exhausting GL search last year,I think I picked every possible place clean (of really good copies). I didn't see any S.C. + , sorry!

For finding Sunday Concert online, if you follow the second amazon.com link John has in his original post here, it will bring you right to the Bear Family edition of Sunday Concert cd that they have for sale.

However if you are looking for a lower price, then ebay is your best bet.

you are absolutely correct. When I first saw this news about the new CD Classic Masters CD I did a Google search for it and luckily found it on pre-release sale at CD Universe but with no picture (I was curious to see what the cover artwork would be so I also checked out Amazon.com nothing there either) so I went to http://www.capitolrecords.com and although they have a current/new releases section there is no mention of the new Lightfoot album. They obviously do not expect there to be much interest as in addition to not bothering to supply a picture to their on-line retailers if you use their "search by artist" feature you are presented with a scrollable list of artists and you've guessed it Gord is omitted.
I did in fact last week order on-line from CD Universe and was advised that it was shipped on Tuesday by first class snail
mail. So I am expecting it momentarily when I receive it I will scan the front and back inserts and post them somewhere (here if I can tame the system this board uses!!) for all to see. I have seen The Bear Family mentioned several times here and must admit that I still don't know what it is and I have always been a bit afraid to say that, feeling that I would be laughed off the site, but I am brave now and I don't think anyone is going to laugh since I have gotten to know most of you. So would someone explain The Bear Family to me?
