hi folks,
guess intros should be priority. my stage name is ambrose woodfellow. my real name is les. more or less. i know, bad joke. <g> among other things, i'm a folk/americana musician. not that i'm good, mind you, but i try. <g>
i'd just like to relate a short story.
sometime during the mid 60's, our family took a vacation to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. while we were there, we visited a landmark site known as the Whitefish Bay Light House.
at the time, and as i recall, the light house was on an open beach facing Lake Superior.
the image of the Whitefish Bay Light House has stuck in my mind over these many years. i stood in awe of that light house, sparse as it was. a tower of open steel amind the vast shore of sand and water of Lake Superior.
after nearly 35 years, i was able to re-visit Whitefish Bay. just this past September i was able to get there again. such a site to see. and such a site more reverant you will not find in Michigan nor on any Great Lakes shore.
as i'm sure everyone here knows, the Edmond Fitzgerald found it's demise 15 miles from the welcome though devastatingly distant shores of Whitefish Bay.
it was heart warming and bone chilling at the same time. a head rush.

Welcome Ambrose!
Can identify completely about the Lake and
lighthouse....bonechilling is absolutely
correct!
If you get Oma started in talking about
Lake Superior, you can count me in, too.
I lived for 21 years only three blocks from the Lake. Am so lonesome for it. It is like missing part of oneself.
Besides being a Gord fan since first hearing
his songs.....his songs about the Lakes have
added to the mystique, loyality, and overall
sense of oneness with his body of work.

so cool, somewhere <g>
i keep a weatherlink to paradise on my startpage!
our daughter and family moved to detroit this past summer. we took vacation to see the grand kids , oh and our daughter too <g>.
we spent the weekend with them and took the back roads to saginaw and then followed the coast of huron up to mackanaw.then we headed up to whitefish, spent a while there and took off to grand malais ( spelling ?). the 'UP' is nothing less than inspiring.
we hit all the lighthouses we could along the way. just a beautiful and perfect time of the year in September.
we'll probably go that way again this summer.
i'd just as soon move up there, but work didn't seem over plentiful ... lotta nice property for sale though ... oh ... now you got me wanderlusting .... <g>
lessee .... was it ... www.michiganrealestate.com ... arghhh !!!!
i love ky, but UP is really an awesome place to be.
best regards, i'm jealous,,, wanna trade farms? <g>

Believe it or not, I am getting the chills
reading all of this.....and now REALLY
lonesome. We had a chance to move to the
UP when we sold my parents home, but you're
right, the job situation isn't that great up there. But it's SO beautiful.
Now that we are getting to retirement age it
is getting to sound even better. We wouldn't
have to worry about getting snowed in.
We've been seriously considering it.

Oma,
You sure got that right, and also "Whispers
of The North" (although Gord wrote it about
the North that is beyond us.)
"Whispers of the north
Soon I will go forth
To that wild and barren land
Where nature takes its course
Whispers of the wind
Soon I will be there again
Bound with a wild and restless drive
That pulls me from within."
-G.L.
(It's beginning to snow here.)

I use to drive out to Whitefish Point every November 10th and drink 29 beers. One for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald. A great place to watch storms. I've seen the waves come up into the parking lot.

Oma and all lovers of winter and the North,
Ah, finally our winter is arriving!! The
temp. has dropped from 54 degrees on Weds.
down to 1 degree this AM....even a little
snow to accompany it.
"Whispers of the wind
I will feel it sting
I will hear it rise and fall
I will hear it sing
The sound is like a song to me
It takes away the pain
The river is the melody
And sky is the refrain."

hi folks
this summer was the very first time my husband and i ever visited the lighthouses of the UP. after you see Superiors face, a steel gray surface with blue sky above can you really understand what all of the Laker' crews know about the harsh freshwater sea. coming up through the locks the day seemed warm, minutes later out on the lake, out from turquoise point lighthouse the lake changed temperature seemed much cooler and the winds became high and cutting to the skin. He really lived those mens' death by being very informed of the life of lake superior---hm-m maybe that's why we call him an artist. painting pictures of life with words...in the rooms of her ice water mansions, home to 29 and many others besides the ones whose wives, sons and daughters we mourned and still mourn in the memory of this song. during that trip we watched the big ships going up and down the river. something quite amazing...that would be my dream vacation, to be crew on one of those huge ships for a season. but, Gordon had so many details of those lakes, that he must have had some experience greater than just living by the lakes...like, perhaps, he ran away as a boy and lived on one of the ships, but, maybe he just listens to the lively stories that people tell around campfires and in his small town perhaps that is where he lived these experiences...just wondering into the ether...what do you guys think? or am I on a taboo subject (I hesitate frequently from commenting since I first entered this corfid domain and found a rather large squabble about what is and is not appropriate to be discussed here).
hey, if I'm in the wrong just delete it, thanks.
lighthouses, one of my passions. anyone wanting information on the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, please,
