I just noticed that The Edmund Fitzgerald was built in 1956. When I was born, in 1957, my Dad was working on a Great Lakes ship. Nice seeing all those pictures with the song. Thanks for posting this Jesse Joe.

oh, I suppose the ship building began in '56 but it's now 50 years since it's completion and the launch ...the recent, June 2008 celebrations had quite a few alumni present

My Dad couldn't have worked on the Fitz then since it wasn't launched yet. Those ships are so huge, they give you a sense of awe when you get up close. I once went on a haunted tour on the S.S. William A Irvin. They have those haunted tours around halloween time every year in Duluth, MN. Had to stand in line for quite a while, but it was worth it. The actors are really good.

SCIHD (Channel 284 on DirectTV) had a great show on Great Lakes Shipwrecks back in March that I recorded. Of course, the Fitz was on there. Although I live in CALIF. now, I used to live near Chicago, and even then, I wasn't aware of how big, and how dangerous, the Great Lakes are. I'm sure they'll rerun it; it's something to watch for!

Actually the bronze plack has 1958,...It sure looks like 56 on my video,...But after reviewing my actual photo of this,...It shows 1958.

The first picture is of me and my son Levi standing by a Great Lakes ship boat propeller and the next picture is of a sunset on Chequamegon Bay, Lake Superior. The two pictures were taken a few months ago within a few minutes of each other.
