IYCRMM in Grade 9

Many of you may have guessed that I'm a high school teacher. One of my colleagues asked me to come into her grade 9 class to play IYCRMM. I gladly obliged. They had been studying poetry and had found "The Way I Feel" in their poetry textbook. She thought that it would be neat for the students to hear another Gord song live. So we had some fun. I role played Gord. Then I sang the song. The scene was quite hilarious. The students (new students to the school and therefore easily intimidated) sat there stunned not knowing what to think. However, in the end, they began discussing the song. It was amazing to see how quickly they picked up on the imagery and poetic techniques in the song. I realized as I listened to them discuss just how amazing that song is with all of the metaphors, similes, and images that convey the feeling that he has (or lacks ) What a great song. I think some grade nine students realize it too. If there are any teachers in corfid land, consider using this song in a lesson play. I'll let you know what happens when I play Wreck for a grade 11 class a few weeks from now.

MM, what a fabulous thing! And another generation gets introduced to the master!
You sound like a great teacher...making it fun and alive for the kids. I didn't think they were any of your kind left. Good to know I was wrong!

That's an interesting thought jj. I'm always trying to be like Gord (playing guitar and singing, trying coffeehouses etc.). I've never thought of Gord trying to be like me!

LSH, Thanks for the encouraging comments. I love teaching, and I care about the students. I do want to make education interesting for them. And I want to be able to significantly contribute to their development as they head out into the world. I get tired of listening to the teachers unions squabble and make trouble. Do know that there are a number of us out there who teach because we love the students and really think we can make a difference.

That's great to hear MM. A lot of teachers (as well as other public workers) that I know are only thinking about the paycheck and vacation time. Nice to hear that someone actually cares!

MM, this was great to hear! We, at the Grammy's, have been trying to promote "Music in the Schools" for years, only to be "crushed" by the current administration!
Good for you! It's caring teachers like you that will make a difference in children!

We had a teacher do Black Day in July for our class when we studied cities, he brought the record in (may 76) then after the Wreck was on the radio in September,I borrowed the album with BDIJ to hear more of Lightfoot and I loved all his other songs, the rest is history!

I've mentioned it before but my daughter studied Yarmouth Castle in English in gr.7 and CRT is in the Grade 8 textbooks here in Ontario. i sent her to school with audio and video for the teacher to use! this was 4 years ago...

That reminds me of a class I had in 7th grade where our teacher tried to demonstrate music of past decades. I recall he played 60's so he must've been around the age I am now.

Anyway,one particular song he played made me jump out of my desk when it started! It began with a high pitched heyena like laugh and that same voice then stated "Wipeout!"
Yep! I got frightened by a surfing song!

On the topic,they should teach all grades about,not just past music,but the deeper meanings behind the songs as well. (Although,I don't think that will include "In The Navy" by the Village People!
