It took the BBC that long to play it???

Came out in December of 1970.... 33 years late?

If this is the timetable, "The Wreck" won't be played for another 5 years...

Wes,

BBC has been known to play Lightfoot from time to time over the past 33 years but they do need a little nudge to remind them of his existence. I've been working at it.

Silver Heels, keep up the good work...

I have heard nothing but good things about the BBC and with them playing GL, they can only get better!

Silverheels: I tend to listen to Radio 2 all day. At the moment I have the radio on here by the computer, also in the kitchen also in my workshop. So as I move through the house I hear music etc all the time.
Radio 2 has played Gordon quite often over the years. But it seems to have tailed off lately.
I did hear "The Wreck....." played by Mike Harding on his Folf Music program a couple of Wednesdays ago. But anything is better than nothing.
I guess, like most of us here on this site, I have all of Gordon's recordings and could listen to him all day if I chose to. But the mission is to convert those who do not know of him. To that end the radio is the means

Sore Thumb,

you could always join me in 'reminding' the radio stations that Lightfoot is still the
Best. Send in some requests for your fave
songs - ring the DJ - pester, pester. Trust
me it does work in the end.

MeanCountry (altho Gord is NOT country) now has Lightfoot on their playlist.

Sometimes,I think the radio, music & TV business needs to be nudged with a reminder. Come to think of it,so do a lot of ordinary peopleand the younger generation. I got to take my "Songbook" CD's to work today and a younger employee said,"What in the world are you listening to?!"...in a tone that was if to say,"Oh no! Old stuff!" Oh,well, his loss. Borderstone, outta here and Alberta Bound!

Stealth infiltration, yeah! I brought my CDs to work (in a small medical library) and played them on the back workroom computer, loud when I was alone, quieter if someone else was working. I had any number of med students ask about the music. One of them remarked, "Oh, him, he's the bomb!" [translation = he's great.] I was pleased with those who recognized the music and educated those who didn't. Never had a complaint.

The BBC has done it again! This morning at about 0745, Terry Wogan (who else) played IYCRMM. Well done Terry

Also, I have recently managed to get TV Channel 5 here in the UK, and during commercial breaks they occasionally play the first 8 bars of said song.

Nice one C5

It has happened yet again. It is just after 2100 here in the UK. Stuart Maconie has just featured Canadian artists on his program, predominantly 'The Band' but he played 'Sit Down Young Stranger' by Gordon, of course.
With a little potted history of the man.
Thank you Stuart

Interesting, when I returned to England frrom Canada in 1969 I started trying to educate my friends there on the joys of Lightfoot music. It was only after the release of the Sit Down yong Stranger album in 1971 that a young disc jockey on BBC Radio One (the top 40 channel that had replaced the Uk's illegal pirate Radio operations) one Noel Edmunds (himself an ex-pirate on I think Radio Caroline) took a real shine to IYCRMM and I began to play it (I seem to recall)every day.Just like the Seattle DJ who made IYCRMM a big hit in the States so did Noel in the UK. the Beeb have played Gordon's records spasmodically ever since and indeed in the 70's played many tracks from a German concert recording (that I found after phoning the Beeb was only available to radio stations). I had by then recorded about 4 of the tracks by astute listening to a very early morning radio program. Also I was amazed one year on Remembrance Sunday (November 11th) to hear "Protocol" on the Sunday morning Desmond Carrington show. The most erudite current BBC DJ is IMHO "Whispering" Bob Harris. If you check his website for his weekly playlists you will find that he has played Sundown 3 times in the last 4 or 5 years and nothing else by our hero. As he is therefore obviously unaware of the many other gems in Gord's jewel case, it would behove Bruna/Silverheels to pester Bob too!!!
The BBC also aired a couple of TV specials in 1971/1972 from the first one I recorded the (sound only) a most magnificent and stomping version of "Farewell To Nova Scotia"
