Christmas with Gord?

I know 'tissn't the season but does anyone know why Gord never got into writing Christmas songs / albums? A lot of singers participate in some way or another. Is it because of religion or family reasons? Just curious...

I don't know, but I'm glad he didn't. Maybe it was too seasonal, too commercial. He's not Bing Crosby (thank God!)

The closest he ever came to that was " Song for A Winter's Night".... funny it can be the hottest day in August and when I close my eyes at night and listen to that song all I can conjure up is snow falling outside my window.

BTW the Moody Blues never ever did a Christmas CD either until last year, except they didn't do a rehash of Christmas traditionals they did their own stuff.

For years he has sung at Christmas services at his local church (not the last two years, obviously) and I have heard his lovely rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" which he sang to ring in the new millenium (from Wayne Francis' site: "Lightfoot, sporting a resprouted moustache, is the first voice heard on Canadian TV in 1999 as he sings Auld Lang Syne at the stroke of midnight, playing solo with his acoustic 6-string guitar.")

So, no, I don't think you'll hear him doing "Silver Bells" or "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" any time soon.

The 1999 Auld Lang Syne by Lightfoot ringing in 2000 was quite the thing. He's wearing a tux, playing guitar and standing in front of a winter backdrop...It gets played every New Year's at my place now!

I wouldn't want to see Gord do a Xmas album in the same way others have done them. With all those same xmas songs ( eg. Anne Murray, Boney M, Harry Belafonte). Too commercial, too cheesy. However, if he could write alot of his own stuff it could be possible to do one in good taste. I have the Bruce Cockburn Xmas album and it's not commercial or cheeseball at all. I wouldn't mind if Gord did one like this.

Maybe he could put out a couple of singles using "Ring Them Bells" and "A Tree Too Weak To Stand". He would have to change a few lyrics though...

Never thought of it BUT I think a Christmas Album by GL would probably sell pretty well. I assume everyone lurking around here would buy at least one. I have a section of shelf in the CD closet dedicated to Christmas Albums and I own every one that was done by people I listen to. (Beach Boys, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Staple Singers, five or six country acts, etc. and all the Mannheim Steamroller stuff). I'm always on the lookout for new ones and I'd snap up one by GL in a heartbeat.

I agree with Rick about GL doing his own Christmas songs. He doesn't sound the type to sing,"Here Comes Santa Claus" or "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". Neil Diamond did a traditional Christmas album a couple of years ago and all I can say to that is, ,glad I saved my $$!

"Circle Of Steel" sounds like a holiday song but it's not really. It's a "bittersweet"(?) look at the holidays or a harsh winter for some in the big city. (Correct me if I may be wrong.)

Charlene has the right idea as well,Mariah Carey did one in 1994 simply titled,"Merry Christmas". Along with some modernized (thank you!) oldies,she put in a few new ones too. Like,"All I Want For Christmas Is You",
"Joy To The World" w/Three Dog Night's "Joy To THe World" in a 2 song medley,
"Miss You Most,At Christmas" & "Jesus,Oh What A Wonderful Child". It still sells today,even if she's not on top of the charts right now.

So please Gordon,write one! We'll all buy it,we promise! Lest we want a lump of coal in our stockings!

I was reading Wayne's site and looking at the album he put out with The Two tones and they did a version of Children Go Where I Send Thee. whether you call it a Christmas song or not it is religious orientated.

I hadfully intended shortly to resurrect a great seasonal topic from last year then was somewhat surprised today to see this slightly older topic that I had forgotten about resurrected albeit a tad early for the festive season which is fine but maybe I am the only one here whose memory is good enough to remember the classic "spoof" album topic??
This started with a simple topic "question" by member jan96 back in December 2004 who enquired:-
"I heard a Christmas song by Gordon Lightfoot this week.
I don't know the name of it, but would love to have it..

I am still working on a necessary front CD insert for Jimmy's "duets" volume two (featuring Cathy's all-time favo(u)rite chanteuse (Celine Dion) and my own proposed "Japanese" album and when done I intend spoofing the original songbook box set box artwork and will then write a fully comprehensive web page on my site and start a new topic to link to my page.
