This week I got as far as using the room by 2 computers each on separate telephine lines and two dufferent ISPs and made this screenshot

but could again not get the text from both of myself to appear at the same time on both monitors.
But as you can see it shows promise.
It requires just one simple link html file only
I will try again next week because th greatadvantage of using Javascript is of course that it then obviates the need to install either mIRC or, after upgrading to a non-Java Virtual Machine equipped browser, the large Sun Microsytems Java Runtime file in order to use our previous great dilexnet.net room

as originally typed I had the :- immediately after the final 0 in the correct URL that I had
in fact copied and pasted "as is" from my earlier posting then the corfid board decided

So I see you all are having trouble with getting a chat started...I believe mirc is the best possible way for you to gain the connectivity for everyone.

I would suggest actually downloading the client (if you have already done this, good), you can obtain it @ http://www.mirc.org.

Make sure to write down the install directory you saved the install program in. Now click on the Start Button, then the "Run..." button. Now click on Browse, navigate to the directory you installed "mirc617.exe". Select it, no click on "Ok" This will install the program.

After it is installed, a link on your desktop should appear. Double click on the mIRC32 Icon. This will start the program.

Once the program loads; click the evaluate button and start your 30day trial. (Once the trial is over, the program will still function, the donation is only a request if you find it useful)

In my next steps I include links to screenshots I have provided to help navigate through this process.

You can there change the topic, member allowments, etc. The box on the right of the channel screen shows the users currently involved in the chat. If you have an "@" next to your nick name you have the option to change these settings. The first one who gets to the chat (or starts it) will have operator status ... as this is called. You can give other people the same status with the "/+o nickname" command in the bottom section (where you would type the text you wish to send to the chat room.

Hi My Dad's Suggestion - I agree the term "EFNET" would sum up my and many, many others feelings about mIRC.
Actually, MDS, the Chatzy room has been quite nice to use. There isn't the constant random booting out of chatters and it is always available, unlike the mIRC that is down often. Come join the group, lots of laughs and good times.

which I very soon diagnosed was the free jwirc applet
but also a link called intriguingly

the icing was put on the cake when one evening I was joined by a most helpful guy from the dilexnet organisation Brian "brut" Tomjack. He not only helped me register the channel etc but was able to tell me that dilexnet also had its own Java applet and gave me the URL to use it.I was then in the delightful position of being able to offer not only two distinctly
different Java applets but due to my earlier experience in the original room I could write up how to configure mIRC from scratch plus of course now had the bonus of a direct URL to automatically open and configure mIRC.
all was hunky dory for a long time until for reasons I never got to the bottom of the dilexnet applet would no longer function, then quite recently nobody could get in using dilexnet by either method.I have just checked and now "The Dilex-Networks Homepage is currently down" but it looks like their IRC channels are still functional
in the meantime Anne from OK had found chatzy chat which as it uses Javascript avoids the twin problems of
1. the non inclusuion of a Java Virtual Machine in new computers running Windows XP
And
2. the continuing reluctance of many delightful fans to get to grips with mIRC
(plus considerable prejudice even hatred/dislike against it due to its alleged propensity to "boot" people out, not true by my own experiences.) On the other hand the Javascript "chatzy" room has been having severe "lagging" problems so I for one am not prepared to tolerate that
I will summarise my latest Javascript research tomorrow but as Laurel said and seems to have now deleted
"mIRC is working" so I propose we use mIRC tomorrow for the regular Friday evening session at 9pm EST

My father visits this site, and he asked me to try and help with the "chat" problems (hence the name). So I tried my best to explain it in a step by step method.

I feel your pain in the fact that it is hard to get a "direct" chat link of people who are not directly connected to the same program/internet provider.

However, I could suggest doing a google search for those java chat applets. There are many of them out there, but the longevity of those clients lasting is up in the air.

In my experience, mIRC will work best. The "BOOT" factor people are reffering to is this; when you connect to a random server, on efnet for example, not all of you are using the same "access server". This results in downtime or "parsing" of some servers that all relate to efnet. If this happens people on those servers will be disconnected from the efnet environment.

This problem can be avoided by using a set server, not just the random placing irc.efnet.net. But then again, it will experience downtime. I cannot truely give you a better idea.. you will have these problems with ALL chat progams you decide to utilize.

A solution I will profer is this: try getting everyone to install an IM client (yahoo would be my choice) and you can then invite people from your buddy list, or what not, into private chat rooms that are facilitated by that program. That will enable the drop out rate to be immensely disabled to only the people who are connecting's internet connection stability.

That is the best advice I can give. Yahoo, Powtalk, etc.

Buttt.... I have been trying obviously unsucessfully to get the message across that due to Microsoft's legal agreement with Java
originator Sun Microsytems Microsoft will no longer be including the MJVM (Microsoft Java Virtual Machine) in any more issues of
Windows (beyond XP) as I found out after installing XP Media Center Edition on my new-build desktop 'puter.
So in that case it matters not a fig what Java applet one tries to utilise.
I have now (for the purpose of trying out other Java applets not conncted with chat) installed the equivalent Java Runtime Environment from Sun and as I had anticipated it is a damn sight longer winded and time consuming than the very easy acquisition then install of mIRC

I looked at Paltalk today but that is Java based as is the chat facility built into Yahoo groups
I know the very first Lightfoot chat rooms were set up by those fans on AOL usin erly versions of AIM as the "geodeticman" here is well aware.
but to my mind having to be invited in would be a backward step and an unecessary complication.
My favourite plan having seen chatzy in action and realising that it was possible to set up an IRC independant private chat that would be 100% based on my own web site using Javascript (where Javascript confusingly has nothing directly to do with Java other than sharing the first 4 letters) would be to find such a Javascript, which has proved difficult so far.
I thought I had found the ideal script at

but have yet to confirm that it will work reliably.Have you any experience of Javascript rooms?
That way would avoid the twin problems of Jsva and people's reluctance to get to grips with mIRC
and as evinced by brink distrust in it
I was especially interested in the qwadchat script because, as I demonstrated by displaying my own picture in the chat panel, it is possible
to use HTML and one of my ambitions is to get more friends using HTML
