Mr Fowles. 
I'm assuming the inability to engage in chat last night was a matter beyond your (or any other member's) control as the server was (and still is, at the time of composing this message) unable to establish a connection.
Could you please advise what actions you're contemplating taking to rectify this "communication breakdown" ?
Silence from my neighbours 17 feet away is always welcome .... an enforced silence from my sisters and brothers in the North Country(ies) 17,000 miles away is not.

As you so rightly assumed Michael it was not my fault.
I expect that our Internet relay Chat server is having a major problem as trying to open

is still not possible nearly 24 hours later
Last night it was not possible to access our channel using either mIRC or the browser Java applet method.
As I told Laurel
due to recent getting in problems and the demise of the applet method that will WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT affect every owner of a new or Windows XP Service pack 2 upgraded machine that does not have the spyware prone Microsoft Java Virtual Machine or its better original from Sun Microsystems,I was already determined to try to find another IRC server. so will try to do so next week

Thanks John,
I'm not sure whether it can be all tied to the XP associated issues you raised in your final paragraph, but that is largely irrelevant in any event given the search for another server.
I should have mentioned that I did gain access to the room on my third attempt, but I exited shortly thereafter given I was the only attendee.
Not that I don't mind my own company, but even I have my limits.

I had gotten in around 7:20 MST and then was emailing with Sharron and Laurel but they couldn't get in. I left and then was unable to get back in.

Also to be sure you have used the quote facility correctly you can if you look carefully spot a great "preview" option. do you use that ever??
that was part of Florian's worthwhile changes last year and is especially useful when displaying pictures. you can also check that hyperlinks are appearing correctly

Meanwhile Anne brilliantly did OK and after some searching shed found a FREE alternative room that worked pretty well on Friday and as it uses Javascript it obviates the twin problems of having to use mIRC or a Java applet that my existing room requires.
One very nice feature is a "visitor list" I was able to log on later on Sunday and found this record of notable chatters.
