I know this has been a topic many times over, but I think this may the reason. I think 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' has got to be one of the greatest songs ever written. It just gives me chills. When he sings, "And later that night when his lights went outta sight, came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," my heart sinks like that ship, thinking of all those who perished there. He sets it up masterfully and then he just hits you with it. And then, the coup de grace, beautiful, mournful, frustrated, searching, "Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours." The man is a master and, in my opinion, wrote a song that may be better than The Beatles, "A Day In The Life".

The line that gives me the chill is,"Lake Houron rolls,Superior sings,in the rooms of her ice water mansion." I can actually picture an ice water mansion and how lonely that sounds. "Wreck" is one of,if not his best of songs. Had it not been for Rod Stewart and the smarmy,"Tonight's The Night" Gord would've had his second and BIGGEST #1 hit. "Wreck" far outsold Sundown but it still only made #2. It's a #1 as far as I'm concerned and as great songwriting in general goes, just about all of his songs deserved the same acknowledgement. Been me,later!

I love "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
to the point of near obsession. It is a song that I fell in love with at the age of
seven and I actually made a "pilgrimage" to the Great Lakes Shipwreck museum to see the bell last July. We spent a whole week in a cabin on Whitefish Bay. That song is undoubtedly my favorite song of all time.

Borderstone,
You're right, Tonight's the Night held the #1 position for an unbelievable 8 weeks! "Tonight's the night, it's gonna be all right." "Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?" As you can see by this side by side comparison of lyrics, there was no contest. Tonight's The Night is obviously a Superior song.

'The Wreck Of The E.F.' and 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' are probably the greatest I've heard so far.

I don't know which Lightfoot song I'd nominate. I have favorites, but not one favorite.
As for other artists, I do know that the original version of Layla would be in the top five if not number one.
Probably Wild Horses by the Stones in the top five.
Deffinitely The Jeannie C. by Stan Rodgers.
