Feb 11, 2011 20:00 ETCanadian Music Legend Thanks Crew Who Helped Save His Life
Gordon Lightfoot Performs at Benefit for the Ornge Foundation

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 11, 2011) -

Editors Note: A photo for this release will be available via Marketwire on the picture wire of The Canadian Press.

Canadian folk-rock icon Gordon Lightfoot met with members of the Ornge transport team which provided critical care air transport when he developed a serious illness eight years ago. To show his gratitude, Mr. Lightfoot performed at a benefit for the Ornge Foundation at Fasken Martineau in Toronto.

On September 28, 2002, the multiple Juno award winner was preparing to perform in his hometown of Orillia when he experienced severe stomach pain. His condition was so serious that an Ornge helicopter with a medical team on board was called in. Mr. Lightfoot was airlifted from the local hospital to Hamilton Health Sciences Centre so he could receive a higher level of care. He went on to make a full recovery. Tonight, Mr. Lightfoot had the chance to meet some of the people involved in his transport.

"We are proud to have been able to play a key role in the recovery of a man who has inspired generations of Canadians," said Tom Lepine, Chief Operating Officer for Ornge. "It's an honour to have Gordon Lightfoot lend his talents to the Ornge Foundation, helping ensure we can continue to provide such high-quality care for the more than 20 thousand Ontario patients who rely on us each year."

Proceeds from the event will be used to support the Ornge Foundation. Established in 2008, its work includes raising funds to purchase medical equipment for aircraft and land vehicles, educating paramedics and advancing research efforts needed to care for and sustain the life of Ornge patients.

The crew from ORNGE was on TV this past week with different people who had been patients and I wondered If Lightfoot had ever contacted them. They, for the time being, have their base at the Toronto Island Airport but plans are underway for them to move west to Hamilton. When I'd stay at the Toronto condo I'd watch them take off and land-they're easy to spot in the sky-bright orange..I see them fly over my place making pickups at the local hospital.
They have saved many lives over the years.

Gordon Lightfoot has donated proceeds from a private performance in Toronto to the Ornge Foundation in a gesture of ‘thanks’ after the air medics rescue in Orillia on Sept. 22, 2008 when the singer was airlifted from the local hospital to a Hamilton facility
