I too thought of Lynne several times over the week and certainly of Barry many times but especially when Lightfoot played Restless as he did solo at the memorial last December.

Hi Val. If the capo doesn't belong to John it probably belongs to one of the band guys. That window ledge was the ideal place for storing accessories etc. and I scooped up everything that was left there at the end of the gig. Because I carry multiples, duplicates and you name it, I automatically assumed it was part of my stash. We'll get it to it's rightful owner eventually. RJ.

The one you scooped up was mine, I think. The one you put on my guitar - which I thought was the one I had handed you and you put on the ledge - was not mine. I don't think. That is, when I got to the room and got the guitar out and put on the capo, it didn't seem like mine. I think I know the difference (I'll have to do some research online), and then I will know for sure which is mine. But - as I said at the time - the one I took off my guitar at the pub (which I didn't look at when I put it away) didn't look right when I took it out later.

I emailed John, so we'll see what he says. I'll let you know.

And no, JJ, I did not end up with two guitars. I could only wish!

PS: It's a matter of the C1 (Original) vs the S1 (Deluxe). This is complicated by the fact that I do have one of each but I think I was only carrying one of them in the guitar case! But now you have given it away, as anybody has a 50/50 chance of getting it right! (Yes, Val, that's mine. I lost a (pick one) C1/S1).

When I saw that Gord was using Shubb capos I started using them as well. The two types that I use are the 2 inch ones, made for six string guitars and the 2 and a quarter inch ones which are slightly curved and are used for twelve string guitars. I have a 2 inch one "permanently" covering all strings with the exception of the low "E" strings and it's on the third fret of the 12 string guitar. I use a "Picker's Pal" capo (for convenience) on the first fret to cover the low "E" string on the 12 string which gives me the "drop D tuning" for tunes like "Early Morning Rain" etc. when played using the chords in the "D" positioning. It's actually the key of "F." The "infamous" capo in question here from what I recollect would be a six string guitar capo, or it could even be banjo capo, who knows? Now that I probably have everyone totally confused I'd better not say more but get on with this beautiful sunny day here in Vancouver, get out play a few Gord tunes.

terrific, paul, glad you got a kick out of the guys, sorry I didnt get typical crowd shot cutaways but I didn't feel like going into 'intrusive' mode and have folks ducking under tables to escape the lens!

unfortunately no pic of Val's GL guitar (how does that differ from say, Ron's D18?) or the sound it produced when Ron gave it a whirl - also other soothing and clever performances took place such as Ron's Stompin Tom > DQ Lightfoot segue/arrangement...I thought he was gonna pull the boot stompin board out, ha

The first is the best of the two pictures my husband took. Unfortunately, I had filled up memory, so that's all he could take. The second is a picture I took when I got back to my room at the hotel.

As far as how the guitar differs from a stock D-18 of any vintage, it's a limited edition made with Quilted Mahogany and Englemann spruce. As with any guitar of any vintage, each one is different, but I think I was very lucky with my D-18GL getting one that good guitar players rave about. It even sounds good when I simply run my fingers across the strings, and that's saying a lot. The top grain is very tight, often an indicator of good sound (it is, of course, an indicator of a very old tree). Dick Boak, at Martin, said that I was very lucky to get such a beautiful and good sounding guitar and this was when it was brand new. It has been played by Terry Clements (back in 2002), and David Mallett (in 2003). Both loved it. And, now it has been touched (but not played) by Gord himself.

The second picture illustrates another way my guitar differs from a stock D-18. Smile, please. Gord picked the spot; very clever don't you think? He specifically said, "I don't want to sign it on the top", and chose a spot where it wouldn't be rubbed out either when played or while in the case.

When I saw Val and husband John coming into the pub, hard shell guitar case in tow, I knew it was the guitar that would eventually come into my hands, and that it did. It was the moment I was waiting for. I took note that Val was very observant of each and every move of that instrument as I greeted them and the guitar was nestled away in a corner until the magic moment came. And come it did when she handed the guitar to me and I practically went legless. A feeling sort of like child seeing the genie appear after the lamp was rubbed. "Here I Am!" Just running a fingernail across the strings would make the bones in the skull vibrate. Could it get any better than this? That was the icing on the cake for me that's for sure. I promised Val that I would be gentle with her guitar so carefully finding our comfort zone we chose "Home From The Forest" as our number. Well let me tell you that before that song was complete I am convinced I saw "Red pines bow their heads" and branches of the "Knotty pine bend beneath the snow." Such a beautiful instrument. It was all very overwhelming, and I sometimes wonder why life seems to be getting so much better when at this late age I'm no longer "coming in?" But it's actually happening; it's never been this good. As Gord says in his song "Seven Island Suite:" Any Man in his Right Mind Could Not Fail to Be Aware." RJ.

Gord chose a great place to sign your guitar, you now definitely have a priceless gem.

For me it would be Gord of course, and then Doyle Dykes, and female maybe Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez...

I wasn't involved in the 2006 jam, but watching the video and comparing to the 2008 version, I think it's a better format to have individual performers come up and do their renditions with whatever accompaniment they see fit than to have, say, 15 guitars and mash of voices all playing the same thing. Just my two cents on it, for what it's worth ...

thanks for the explanation...interesting, a piece of art, a collector's item...so while Ron has a wonderful and cherished Mickey Mantle, you've basically got yourself a Honus Wagner...it sounded real nice

Do you know the type of Amp Gord uses to plug his Martin D 18 ? Ive seen it on stage a lot, I know it's a Fender, but do you have the specific type its pretty large 2 speakers ?? Would appreciate this info very much.
