Why did they change the name of this album? Is there any other reason than the obvious? And are you a true Lightfoot fan if you have the original? Is there any difference other than the name? This has been bugging me for years.

I don't know all the answers to your questions, but I do know that being a true Lightfoot fan is not about the albums you own and how many original vinyl prints you have, but about how much you appreciate his music and the man that created the sound we all love so much. The rest is just a bonus!

- i believe it's the obvious, he recently explained it in algebraic terms...something like, he was told by the record label execs that we are currently moving X albums...if we change the name, we can move 7X or something like that
- not sure, but it could mean you're an American
- no, i don't think so
...hope that helps, the answer's carved upon a tree

I thought it was probably about sales and numbers. I totally understand about appreciating the music and the man. I was just being a bit sassy. You guys are all so knowledgable I just thought there might be some inside reason for the change.
You're right! I am American. However, I spent the greater part of my childhood in Canada - Ottawa, Quebec, B.C. And my brother still lives in Edmonton. I might not have been introduced to him at such a young age if I had grown up in the States.
I didn't mean to offend anyone, really.
How do you get smiley's here?

Not offended! I guess I just wanted to express my fondness for Gord
As for the smilies - when you create a message or hit reply to message - you will see that there is a 'Smilies Legend' to the left of the 'reply box' where you type. Click that and then select the smilie you want to insert by adding the relevant text as instructed in the smilies legend

now THAT's something you should be sorry for! lol
well, i suppose Toronto and Ottawa folks can get along now that there's no hockey, lol
no offense, sassy is good
i think most of the SDYS album versions made there way into the States (someone like Val or Char or John would have a better answer) so that's what i meant by "you're an American" ...i didn't mean to offend you, really! lol
ps) how's this, i didn't personally possess my own copy of either the SDYS or IYCRMM albums until just a few years ago...and i'm still a pretty true fan, oddly enough

Sentimental,hi! Yes,they did change the name of the LP to sell more copies. When the "Read My Mind" single hit it big, they quickly decided that changing the name of the LP would move more product and maybe get Gord's name out there even more. (Sounds like a sure way to sell yourself out artisticly to me! )
I did find a copy with the original title in Oct. of 2002 while out record hunting, trying to complete my GL stash! Along with it I found an absolute perfect copy of Don Quixote with no white circle on the front!
Being a true GL fan means you like Gord's music and words as is! .....and you just like Gord in general. Been me! Later!

Yah, but even before they put the SDYS on the LP wasn't it just blank?

I highly doubt they had it blank, the group America tried that with their 1976 LP,"Hideaway". Just a picture of the group in front of a winter chalet (fancy word for cabin).
It didn't sell well and that's only part of the reason. The other...by that time they were a bit overexposed and "had" to put out LP's due to contract.
Getting back to Gord's LP,a title-less cover is not a good idea for an artist trying to breakthrough on the pop charts. Especially a country to country cross-over.
Been me. Later!

Doubt it or not, there are copies out there with no title, just his name, of the SDYS album. I've seen it for sale on ebay too.

You know, I was in the famous underground St. Louis record store, Vintage Vinyl, back in 1998 and I saw a copy of SDYS. For some reason or another, I did not buy it. Curses!!! If I'm meant to have it, I suppose it will find its' way to me.
Cheers,

You are absolutely correct.
albeit some "blank" copies do have a sticker proclaiming that the album is the "new Gordon Lightfoot"
In fact there is a an auction underway at:- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=4702014190
but hurry it ends on February 23rd
For me regardless it will always be the "Sit Down Young Stranger" album
which is the name on my 1970 purchased vinyl album (Made in London England/distributed by Pye Record(s)
Sales Ltd)

I got the blank version at Golden Oldies Records and Tapes (used of course) when I lived in a suburb of Tacoma, WA several years ago. The back of the album cover states that it was manufactured and distributed in Canada, 1970.

There is no difference in the 2 albums, except the titles.
The song thought to break thru didn't. Another one did, hence the new title.
My LP is entitled "Sit Down Young Stranger." My CD is "If You Could Read My Mind."
Defending on condition, a "Stranger" is worth some bucks vs the other.
The songs, and their making, remain exquisite.

Wouldn't the blank version be worth even more than the other two?

Yes, absolutely.
Until this moment, as I read the posts, I didn't know about the blank cover.
I have a buddy in Santa Barbara who operates an LP only place, American Pie. He'd probably be up on the value.

Here's a note I got this morn from a friend in Santa Barbara, CA who owns a record store, not CDs:
Rez.... Thanx for the E-mail. I (like you) have only seen a picture of the "only" Gordon Lightfoot cover. It would be worth considerably more than the SDYS ($25). If You Could Read My Mind is $10 and EVERYWHERE (I have some in the back "bargain room" for $3). The VERY first two he ever made available only in Canada are WAY up there ($200-$400) and, of course are conSIDerably hard to find as he personally tried to buy all copies of the first one personally to destroy them with an axe (I kid you not!!!)
Vinylly, The Doc (Dennis)
Gotta ax him about that axe!

I know my "SDYS" is most likely worth something but...$$$ or not,I refuse to ever part with it. I was lucky to find it that day, just like the person who will get that "titleless" copy will be after they make the winning bid!
Whomever that will be,I am totally envious! Later!
