Florian,
Thank you very much for the reply. You are right of course but I just can't stand trolls. Thank you for deleting the inappropriate posts. You should really delete the troll who is using your name (Floorian), LOL. And by the way thank you for keeping this site up and running, I for one really appreciate it.
Thanks again,
Bill

And so say all of us!!!
Florian, I think you should also delete this joker. He's trying to imitate John Fowles, for Pete's sake! (and doing a pretty good job of it).

Okay Val, I am really slow, since it isn't us "the fans" are you referring to Linus or EMP? If I have finally caught on, it would have been nice if they would have recognized your site, Linus refers to Wayne Francis' site on their Gordon page.

ashame to hear, thanks for all the hard work, Valerie and best of luck with all
sure trust that Florian, Char and other webfolks, past and present acknowledge the the utmost thanks implied in "along with others too numerous to mention", from Songbook's liner notes - that's how i've always perceived it anyhow and i surely second that!
"A special debt of gratitude is due to Wayne Francis, without whom I could not have properly undertaken this project; his wise counsel and love of Gord's music permeates this entire set. Thanks also to Valerie Magee and Matthew Fifer, who (along with others too numerous to mention) carry the torch on the Web..."
please take care and thanks again! Jimmy

I too will miss Val's site, but having given the site so much effort for so long with little thanks, she owes us nothing. She deserves a break if she wants it or needs it.
Perhaps we should give thanks more often while we are enjoying something rather than bemoan it after it is gone. It's true about life, it's true about love, it's painfully true about Gord and his music, and it's true about Val's site too.
As one of the guilty, I say my belated thanks.
For those who are having trouble keeping up with Gord's concert schedules (or don't want to miss out when he resumes touring), may I suggest that you go to www.pollstar.com and register (free) for their service. You can designate artists whose concerts you want to be notified about, and when a new concert is added to the artists' schedules, you will receive email notification.
Pollstar's info is not as quick as Val's was, and it doesn't give advance notification prior to actual confirmation, but unless you need the first row at the concert or it's one of those concerts that sells out in 2 hours, you will receive notification in plenty of time to book a ticket.

So does it boil down to someone in Gord's organization wanting to reclaim the gordonlightfoot.com domanin? And "they" are giving Val a hard time until she relinquishes it?

I imagine not. At least if my understanding is correct in that one can't "REclaim" a domain that one never registered. I'll admit, I know nothing about web sites and domains, but I would think until such time as she discontinues the registration, fees, or whatever is involved in maintaining ownership of a domain, no one else can do anything with it whether the web site is active or not. I think it's time to accept Val's decision and stop trying to second guess her reasonings - she told us why she did it.

You are correct, however there have been successful lawsuits against individuals who own domains that are clearly useful to another business entity.
Two examples where individuals had to relinquish domains after lawsuits: ford.com and mtv.com.

Ah, thanks for the insight. As I said, I know nothing about web sites and less about registering domains.

I am wondering if Valerie will make some response to this point but meanwhile it was my understanding that at one point she did indeed offer to transfer the domain name gordonlightfoot.com to EMP for a few corns of mill-fillers

If she took it completely down and made it unavailable, most people would just think she's having a server problem and that the site will eventually be back up. Can you imagine all the e-mail she would get? She has at least 8000 Lightfoot fans on her mailing list, and everyone of them would be e-mailing her to tell her there's something wrong with gordonlightfoot.com. The withdrawn message finalizes it. It's gone for good, whether we like it or not.
She's put over 2000 hours of work into that sight since it's inception. I'd say she's paid her dues. It's time for someone else to pick up the torch.
But dont ask for her pages, or offer to host it and keep it updated. She took a lot of pride in her work, and there is no way she'd give it away. It was done as a labor of love, both for Gord's music and for the fans. For six years she kept us informed and brought us together, and now she deserves a rest.
I can say though, she didn't take it down because of pressure to turn the domain name over. She's said there were disappointments along the way, not having a good flow of information, not getting approval from Linus to sell the CD from her site. How many of us would have bought from her? Probably more than a few.
Running a fan site is a very thankless job. I don't see too many posts where we jumped in and told her thanks. I'm as guilty of it as anyone. And I really doubt that Linus or EMP gave her much encouragement. I know that Gord thanked her just about every time we went backstage. He seemed to be truly appreciative of her hard work and support.
My big fear is that eventually someone else will register gordonlightfoot.com and just let it sit there and rot, or do a website that isn't worthy of his talent and long career. We all know Val's site was from the heart. The information was accurate. The updates were timely. I don't think the average webmaster, someone who isn't a true fan, will put the effort into it that she did.
Like the old Joni Mitchell song says, "You don't know what you got til it's gone."
I do wish people wouldn't speculate about what happened. My God, by the looks of some of these posts, we need to reincarnate Perry Mason!
When Val sees fit, maybe she will give us more of an explanation. Or maybe not. She sure doesn't owe us anything.

I might get hammered for this but, whatever..
could it be that someone in Gord's organization really pissed Val off to the extent that she pulled the plug on a very good, respectful, well organized and researched website? I would even entertain the idea that Mr. Lightfoot has not one whit of an idea that this is going on. He prefers to stay on the sidelines when it comes to internet reverence of his career and contributions. Is it possible that for all the very much deserved praise and gratitude we have expressed towards Linus Entertainment, that they are behind what pissed off Val so much? Just speculating....

I venture that when you discover the one responsible for pissing Val off, you most likely will also have solved the JFK assassination conspiracy, the kidnapping of the Lindberg baby, and possibly even the Chandra Levy killing. More things are connected than most of us would like to believe.

You're either though with the whole debacle or you're not. <snip>
Uh, I doubt it's for sentimental reasons. More likely it's to prevent it from falling into the hands of those scavengers that buy up dormant domain names and use 'em for porn sites. EMP would be smart to buy the rights to the name when the present lease runs out, even if they never plan on using it.

I may be wrong but it seems like here we go again: rant & rave and then delete the post leaving later readers to wonder what the heck this thread is talking to. It's funny how the quotes stay after you delete the original post. Maybe decaf might help.

Personally, I'm glad it's been deleted. It doesn't make sense for someone to rant and rave when they don't know the details.
