Personal update

Just to let you know my mother is improving slowly but still in hospital and expects to be probably through this week. The CT scan was unchanged from 2 years ago and they've scheduled an MRI and carotid scan in the next two days. They've increased the Dilantin from 3 to 4 pills a day and the fog is lifting - at least she's not still calling us by the dog's name <g>.

And as for the pup, he's got some bacterial overgrowth in his intestines (he's rumbly in his tumbly) so he's on an antibiotic for 10 days. Now to get the pills IN him....

If your dog is crafty and and pick his pills out the food, the best way and the only way I give my dogs pills is to hold their mouth open, put the pill on the back of their tongue and then hold their mouth closed. It will ensure that they are indeed getting the medication and also saves you the time of playing games with them.

My dogs are used to it and don't even bat an eyelash when it is pill time.

One of our dogs, Piggy by name, will just eat the pills like candy, go figure...

I'm happy your Mom is doing better. I remember the hospital shuffle well from looking after my parents. Good to hear about the pup too. There is something new making the rounds through dog shows and dog parks, it's been on most of the dog lists. My friends setter had it a few weeks ago. Antibiotics and lots of hydration did the trick for him.

Take care, look after yourself too.

Mom's holding steady - today she thought I was my sister Joan, but at least it's not the dog. The doctor hasn't quite figured if it's anything other than seizures, so they'll be running more tests. And I have a sister having an MRI today for possible bulging disc.

As for pills, after pup-wrangling for a while I gave up and turned the job over to my 14 year old. She managed with no trouble. She's used to her friends' dogs.

glad to here your day was much better Auburn Annie. Keep us posted on moms progress. I hope the tests give some positive answers.
Kids generally do better with animals. My daughter wanted to be a veterinarian, now she is becoming a registered nurse, she would be better off with animals, no back talk and no lawsuits (I don't think animals can do lawsuits yet...lol). Hope all goes well for you and yours.

My grandcats had ringworm three weeks ago, I was called in to assist with the pill ordeal 'twas not a fun thing. The cats stayed in the kennels and we used gloves, and prevented them from passing the disease unto the humans thank goodness.
Glad your Mom is doing better, had she been on dilantin before she went into the hospital? I hope she rebounds quickly and eases everyones mind. Nice to not be called the dog's name huh?

Yes, she's been on 3 Dilantin a day for about 2 years when this first post-stroke seizure thing happened. Worked good until now - she hadn't had another episode since she first started. She is getting better: clear periods lasting longer than fuzzy ones. And Samson (the puppy) is his old rambunctious self today.

Update:

Mom may go home either tomorrow or Thursday. She's off monitors, adn had her IV removed this afternoon. One of my sisters performed her own neuro-check, having Mom sing "Harrigan" [H-A- double R -I etc.] over the phone.

And as for me, when I got home this noon, I'd had a call from the Syracuse Veterans hospital where I'd applied for a job. I've got an interview February 18th (I'm one of the top 3 applicants - yippee!!) It's a 2 hour situation-based, 4-person panel interview. Keep your fingers crossed!
