I am a 24 year old who was raised on the music of Gorden Lightfoot. He's gotta be in my top five favorates! I remember when I was little, I'd look at his picture on the record album and think he was so handsome. I'd lay on the floor next to the record player, listening to his songs. Even at early ages, I'd try to imagine myself in some of his lyrics. I didn't always understand him, but simply enjoyed his music. his songs are a foundation to me these days. my tastes are diverse, but when in doubt just listen to "summer side of life". things just click and make all the sense in the world. Thanks Gordy! Greta

I have enjoyed Mr. Lightfoot's music ever since I first heard as a boy of 10 years. I have been singing along for 27 years now. A belated happy birthday and a wish for many more. I pray that the Great Spirit will grant me an opportunity to see Mr. Lightfoot before either of us leave our flesh. I am a "rainy day" person and wish to tell him that so many times that song lifted me up. May a shower of blessings rain down on you, Mr. Lightfoot and bring you a quick and full recovery.

Hi Gordon: Have enjoyed your music for years. You will probably think I am out to lunch but I believe in being straight forward. I direct one of North America's longest standing festivals, the Miramichi Folksong Festival Inc. which is celebrating it's 47 season 2004. We are one of the oldest and probably one of the smallest festival in North America. I have been directing this event for 25 years and this year I am looking for a big name for our closing concert on August 6, 2004. We have a civic centre that holds 2000 and it would be a great privilege to have you close our 47th festival. I do hope this reaches you and would like to hear back from you A.S.A.P. Thanks, Susan Butler Dir. of the 47th Miramichi Folksong Festival Inc.

Mr. Lightfoot, Some of my fondest memories of music from my childhood are singing at the top of my lungs with you every time "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" or "Sundown" or "Carefree Highway" would come on the radio. I'm 37 years old now and still can't resist singing along when I hear those songs. Thanks for the memories. Happy Birthday and God bless.

I play 275 shows a year. Just me and the guitar, flesh, wood & wire. I play a lot of Gordon's songs and they never fail to earn a comment from someone in the audience. I actually had the oportunity to see Gordon live in 1996. I recently played the same stage with my own band. My first song out of the shoot was one of his. It got a standing ovation out of 3000 people and they didn't even know who the hell I was. Its got to be the songs! Come back to Ashland, Kentucky Gordon, we miss you bad.

I first discovered Gordon Lightfoot in 1969 when I bought "If You Could Read My Mind". I was led to his music through Peter, Paul & Mary and Ian & Sylvia. I play almost all of Gord's songs both finger and flat-pick style and I have gained so much from the lyrics that have provided endless hours of listening enjoyment and experimentation. Thank you for providing the world with so much wonderful music through your songs and poetic insight.

For all you great Gordon Lightfoot fans ... I just learnt the most amazing thing!!! We're doing research on composers in my music clss and my Dad (Lionel Pruden) was helping me. I learnt that I'm related to Gordon Lightfoot!!! My Dads great Grandmother was a Lightfoot! So I was doing more research and I had no idea that he wrote 'If I could read your mind' I love that song! Music must run in the family. I'm the singer in a band called 'Merth'. I also play the guitar, drums and the piano. We're doing really well. I recently got a hight Merit for one of my compisitions! This is way to cool! :)

You are in my opinion the Greatest Songwriter/Singer that I have had the pleasure of listening to. I have been listening to your music since 1973 starting with the If you could read my mind hit. I at once began to purchase everything that I could find albums, sheet music etc. pertaining to Gordon Lightfoot. When albums became a thing of the past I replaced them all with cds and I am still an avid fan and am sure to always be. I recently purchashed the live in Reno dvd and was truly in awe of the performance. Time has not diminished the quality or beauty of your voice or your skills as a performer. I would really like to see you perform in person. I can not tell you in words how much your music has meant to me in the last 30 years.

I just received Songbook in the mail and have been listening to Gord all weekend. Seriously, I don't think I've listened to one other artist for three days and I usually listen to music constantly when I'm home. Not only have I been listening to Songbook, which contains many songs I've never heard before, like 'Shadows', (which I heard a long time ago and forgot, but when I heard it again and knew it was Gord, my heart just melted, I sat down and closed my eyes and just listened), and 'That Same Old Obsession', and 'Heaven Don't Deserve Me' and so many others. The only CD of his I actually own is 'If You Could Read My Mind', and I've listened to it a gazillion times. My favorite is 'Saturday Clothes'. Does anybody else love this song as much as I do? I just really identify with it, I guess. I then met a lovely lady who owned Gord's Gold, Vol. 1 and I fell in love. Really, I said, "You have Gord's Gold?! You're so cool!" Since then, I've had a renewed interest in Gord and have been fervently pursuing any information about him. Unfortunately, I haven't come up with much. Does anybody know if there is a biography about him? Seems unusual. He seems like a private guy, but his songs are so deeply personal. I understand that he had a drinking problem for awhile and he's been through one or two divorces, among the more difficult times in his life. Anyway, appropriately, I'm now listening to 'Stay Loose'. I get most of his albums off RealOne Rhapsody, which I highly recommend, by the way. I have no affiliation with Rhapsody, just a friendly recommendation. Anyway, it's nice to find so many other fans out there. The guy is such a brilliant songwriter and I'm looking forward to the few CDs I haven't heard. If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

Mr. Lightfoot, It's fall again and time to play your classic songs again. Your music always had that "fall" feeling for my first wife and me. We played the songs over and over again, especially on northern Michigan and southern Ontario adventures. I have since remarried and am currently introducing my spouse to the romance of your lyrics. My favorites are the songs about women, but she favors the nautical ones. I saw you in two concerts long ago at Grand Valley State and Wings Stadium here in Michigan.

I was already familiar with you from my time in (ack!) Milwaukee and I there when you wrote "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". So - simply - you have given my life a dimension that would not have been there had you not been. For thst I thank you. I hunt. I remember singing along with Gordon lightfoot in the 70's (I was just a tike then) but I could sing and play the guitar, and was facinated by some of the haunting songs Gordi sang, about ships going down etc.. Iwas always facinated with ghost and ghostship stories being from Nova Scotia. It's sad I never got to see him in concert growing up due to family problems. I finally did get to see him at his most famous venue"Massey hall here in Toronto. I actually got back stage and met the band but Gordi had all ready left. 've been told countless times I sound just like him and I discovered through vocal training that we both have the same range. My plan is to produce a compilation cd of his greatest hits, and the proceeds will go to whatever charity Gordon wishes.. I wish Gordon a fast speedy recovery health and hapiness to him and his family, I hope God blesses us with another 20 years at least of the man and his music... P.S I am looking for musicians that know his music really well and are serious about forming a band that can reproduce his sound. I'm looking for musicians that know and love his music and will justice and honor to his music and carry on his legacy, if you're one of those musicians and you're serious, drop me an email and I'll respond.. Thanks Mike

Good afternoon from Plano, Texas U.S.A.: I found this website while looking at a radio personality's web site(artist links). I am originally from Syracuse, New York and have lived in the Dallas area since November of 1983. My earliest memory of Gordon Lightfoot came in 1967. My father was a member of the Masons organization; one of his friends in the organization ran a "one stop" record distribution operation in Syracuse. When I started listening to Top 40 radio around 1956(age 11), my father would bring me home some promotional 45 RPM records this gentleman would give him. It was February of 1967 as I recall when I went down to the one stop to visit my dad's friend to purchase some current 45's. He gave ma a small box full of promotional discs. The very first 45 promo disc on top was "Go Go Round" By Gordon Lightfoot. I played it as soon as I got back home, because I was very intrigued by the title. I immediately fell in love with the song the first time I heard it. As time went on, and I was involved with other spare time activities, every so often I would think of that song. In 1974 I heard "Sundown" on the radio and that brought back memories of "Go Go Round". In 1977, I heard "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". That song convinced me that I should purchjase a Gordon Lightfoot album...I was so fascinated by the his music. I eventually purchased a greatest hits album. In 1991, I discovered the hobby called karaoke. From the first night I sang(March 3, 1991), I was totally hooked. I worked with laser discs at first, then got into the CD + Graphics format at various venues. I found one company in Charlotte, North Carolina, that was releasing an interesting variety of songs. So it wasn't too surprising that opne of my first CD plus graphics from this company had "Carefree Highway" on it. I listened to the original recording to get the correct vocal inflections...once I sang it, I discovered that my vocal styling very similar to Grodon Lightfoot's style. Pleasantly surprised, I eventually added "Sundown" and "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" to my karaoke repetoire. Those three songs are performed in rotating venues. Currently, I do have my own karaoke venue, I host and DJ at a local retail karaoke store(Spotlight On Karaoke). The store is in Town East Mall in Mesquite, Texas(east suburb of Dallas). I do a Saturday and Sunday show. I always include one of the three Gordon Lightfoot songs in my act. I've had customers come up and ask me why I haven't considered going professional. I'm a strictly for fun singer who just wants to entertain people. Going back to "Go Go Round" for a moment. That is the one Gordon Lightfoot song I would truly enjoy performing someday if it ever became available in the karaoke format. I'm quite familiar with all copyright rules and licensing agreements and publisher's clearances in the recording industry. I would like to thank you very much, Gordon Lightfoot, for some wonderful memories and music.

Lightfoot's music was so very important to me. I hope he's feeling better and comes back soon. Listening to his newer stuff can be sad for me, as his writing and voice have both changed, and it must be tough to know that one's best days are in the past, but I still have the vinyl to take me back to those earlier days. I just happened to find this website and I got to tell you, when I typed in Gordon Lightfoot in relation to web surfing,I never expected anything to show up! Anyhow, you're site is really super and I like the fact you can either post regiseterd or not! You may wonder why I chose Borderstone for my line-name. Well, aside from being a Gordon Lightfoot song,I just wanted to be more original in my choice. I was going to call myself Ring Neck Loon but some people feel I talk about myself too much as it is already! Also, let me close by saying I've listened to Gordon's hits since I was a kid but never really got into his overall music until Aug. 2002. I'll tell you why another time. Well,I hope the people here are friendly and I'll be posting soon. It's been Borderstone, see ya! There, now I feel better.:D

I have been a big fan for many years. My grandmother's maiden name is Lightfoot, which after tracking it back, I am a 3rd cousin. I grew up near Battle Creek, MI, but my mother's family is from the Toronto area.

As a symphony conductor, people frequently ask me what music I listen to. Of course they are referring to the classical composers i.e Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, etc. When I reply that I listen to folk music, a noticeable twitch of the head often follows my percieved response. Yes I do listen to the classics, but to me classical music is music that lasts forever. I enjoy the folk singers. Gordon Lightfoot's music hits to the very core of the soul. It is what all music is about. As an artist, he combines the lyrics perfectly with melody, both independently worthy of themselves, yet together unistakenly original. You will live on forever Mr. Lightfoot,

I'm so glad to hear that Gord is doing much better.I wish you all the best. Always been a fan but more so recently I have become an even bigger fan. I write and perform some of my own music and I must say that I have learned so much about lyricism and music arrangement just from listening to Gordon's music. Rarely a day goes by that his songs aren't heard in my home or at work. Everyone at the shop knows and hears his music because of me,(whether they like it or not!) My four children even know some of his songs!(they love The Pony Man) So without going on forever here I would like to thank Gordon for bringing me and so many others so much enjoyment. I have never seen him in concert and I have made a promise to my self that I will! (good Lord willing) Thanks again and the best of luck in everything from here! Sincerely, J.B.

If I may add please: Nagaland is a hilly tract of verdant land in the north-eastern frontier of India, a continuation of the Himalayan range called the Patkai Hills. From gurgling brooks to gushing rivers, through valleys and gorges in a land rich in fauna and flora we are a people yet struggling for freedom and self-determination. We are an ethnic group of tribes bound by a common ancestry. We pray that one day we, as a people, will realize our dreams and start building our nation; “….. standing there in the hot sun… using our sledgehammers……… bending our backs till the railroad is done…….” Thank you Gord and wish you well.

Hello Gordon, I am from Nagaland. A country very far from Canada. Most people dont know about us. But thats hardly the reason I am posting this message. Like everthing else the 'internet' found us late in Nagaland, so this delay in voicing my appreciation of your songs and music over the years. We only get to hear what we get locally which isnt always the latest. But your songs have brought me much joy. I particularly enjoy winning over young people to your songs. Weaning them away from a lot of trash we get these days. Thanks Gord! With deep regard, Mhon.

Dear Gordon, First off, I wish you good health and a complete recovery. I was at your last show in Sedona, Arizona. I live in Phoenix and had passed up your shows at the Dodge Theater to journey to Sedona...it was well worth the two-hour drive! It just seemed appropriate to see you in the open amphitheatre...sitting in the cool grass...under a starry sky. Being born in late 1971, my parents raised me listening to your music. At times, your songs take me back to those days when my whole family was around a warn campfire singing your songs. Treasured are these memories in my life...Thank you. Like I have explained to my friends, whom recall your more popular songs, over your career you have provided us with a variety of songs to remember. Song such as “Early Morning Rain”, “Sundown”, “Race Among The Ruins”, “The Pony Man”, and “Baby Step Back” are great, but still...these are like grains of sand in a vast beach of wonderful songs you have composed! I would also like you to know that when you feel better, if you should decide to tour again...When you arrive in Arizona (Phoenix-Sedona-Flagstaff-Wherever)...I’ll be there! I hope this letter makes it way to you, so that you can see the admiration and gratitude I have for you and what you have done over the years. Get Well & Thank You, James Heffington Phoenix, Arizona “Home of the Carefree Hwy” P.S. On the way home from the Sedona Concert I called a local radio station KOOL 94.5 to tell them how great the experience was, and they put me on the Air!!! It was Great!

All your devotees in N.I. were saddened to hear of your recent illness and are overjoyed to know that you are on the road to recovery. I have been fortunate enough to have seen you perform in London, Manchester and Belfast - we actually shook hands and chatted when you were playing the Free Trade Hall in Manchester - a meeting I will always remember! I first listened to a Gordon's song via an Internet Folk Radio Station (don't remember which). The song was the "Minstrel of the Dawn" and I was amazed by the simplicity and the warmth of the melody, the voice of the man of course was a true pleasure to my ears. I live in Greece (I am Greek) and unfortunatelly the radio here does not play frequently such kinds of music. So I think I was true lucky to come across Gordon through the internet, that night. Since then I've been collecting Gord's songs as a maniac. There is not a song that I can distinguish and mark it as my favourite, because every song I hear from Gordon is another piece of expensive jewellery to my music collection. He has gained my heart with his simplicity and serenity of the music and the rich lyrics of every song. I wish him to fully revover from his illness and give the world again his treasurable music with another new album.

May the spirits of the tewnty nine men walk through the halls of The Ice Water Mansion for eternity, ever vigilant, ever watchful of those of us left behind on this earth. You have immortalized them in your music and one day, to this fan, you will also be immortalized for the work you have done here. May God bless you and keep you and I wish you well for years to come. Thank You for your music and the heart and feeling that you have put into it and given to the world. Sincerely and Respectfully, Thomas Hobart

I've been listening to Gordon since 1973, when 'Sit Down Young Stranger' completely mesmerised me. I've heard all his early material & had a pretty large collection once on LP records. His records aren't freely available in India, but I've travelled a lot as a seaman & 'have sailed the bitter oceans with a ladylike devotion' and managed to amass a few. I wish Gordon a total, complete recovery.

Great recovery Mr. Lightfoot! Congradulations! I've been following the news of your illness on the internet. Good to hear that your back home with your family! I would like to let you know that my band and I have Edmund Fitzgerald on our play list as a regular and the only cover that we do. We've also recorded what I think to be a good version of it, but I've never had the nerve to release it?? Every time at gigs during the last months I've told the public how great a Canadian song it is. I've also told them about your postion in Canadian music and about your sudden illness and how we wish for your sure recovery. The last performance was in a place called the Copenhagen Jazz House only a few days ago and before that at Canada Festival in Norway. I'm very proud to tell you this. I'm born and raised in North Ontario and the song just brings me straight back home , thanks for writing it. I also talk with Mr. David Foster office in California because the Canada Festival in Norway needed his permission to perform his rendition of the anthem at the festival, I realize he worked with you way back when? Hope we will hear a new album from you as soon as your fully recovered. Best regards Len in Oslo.

I first saw Gordie in concert in September, 1968, in Fredericton, NB. I have been a fan since then. Let's hope he continues to write songs as a piece of Canada goes out to the world with each song.

He's truly a poet whose words and music have touched my life for many years. I'm so glad he's feeling better. I c****ed everyday for news of his progress while he was in the hospital. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert in Denver, Colorado. It was absolutely the best concert I have ever attended. I look forward to more of his wonderful poetry.
