As most everyone who participates in this forum knows, Gordon Lightfoot & Bob Dylan have been friends for quite some time. Lightfoot's cover of Dylan's Ring Them Bells is one of my favorite tracks. Lately, I've been digging into Bob's back catalog somewhat, and was surprised to find out that he did a cover version of Early Morning Rain on his Self Portrait double LP from 1970. A real nice one too, with Dylan's trademark harmonica playing. If you haven't heard it yet, check it out!
I remember back in the early 70s, on a roof doing HVAC work, a coworker began singing Early Morning Rain. I said, "ah, Gordon Lightfoot!" He said, "NO, Bob Dylan of course. Don't you know anything?" I said, "Um, no, that's a Gordon Lightfoot song. Trust me on this."
I finally convinced him that Gord wrote it. And that's how I found out that Dylan covered it. We both learned something.

Same thing happened to me during the early 70's. I showed the sheet music to the person who insisted Dylan wrote EMR and they relented.
