Dialling for love
Yuri and Cathy Amatnieks
.While Paris may be called the City of Love, I had only to travel from Toronto to La Belle Province to discover l’amour. In 1971, at the age of 16, I accompanied my highschool classmates to Quebec City, where we found ourselves immersed in culture, exploring historic sites such as the Citadel, the parliament buildings and the Plains of Abraham. Good fortune had us staying at the luxurious Château Frontenac, high above the St. Lawrence River.
Retiring to our room one evening I peered from my window and spied a pretty girl reading a book in a windowsill across the courtyard. As a teenager with few inhibitions, I began to shout greetings, which to my dismay were ignored. Having recalled that phone numbers to individual rooms were derived from a combination of the floor and room number, I began dialling random numbers on her floor. Zeroing in on her room through wrong numbers, no answers and observing lights in adjoining suites turn on, my attempts were finally rewarded.
With my handset ringing, I watched as the young lady dropped her book and disappeared into the room. The sweetest voice answered, “Hello.” After convincing her of my sanity and exchanging a bit of small talk, we agreed to meet in the morning for breakfast. Over coffee and toast I discovered that Cathy was from Boston, Mass. , and also on a class trip to this historic city.
With both our stays at an end, we traded addresses and promised to exchange a few letters. Those few letters turned into two suitcases stuffed full of envelopes. University and other pursuits delayed our marriage until 1986. Now, some 40 years after that first meeting, we’re approaching a quarter century of marriage. I still find myself amazed that fate brought the two of us together and eternally grateful that the sweet voice that answered hello also honoured me by answering “I do.” — Yuri and Cathy Amatnieks, Mississauga, Ont.
