.EVANSVILLE — I took a recent trip in a time capsule. My husband and I went to Louisville, Ky., to see Gordon Lightfoot, whom I have interviewed and met on more than one occasion.
When the lights in picturesque Palace Theatre dimmed, my heart started beating rapidly. I was going to see someone who sang me through my very young years into the present. My kids all were listening to his music while still in the womb.
Back in New York, when concert tickets were still cheap, we would jump in the car and see him at any venue in the area (there were many).
He writes music that touches the heart and seem to be talking right to you.
In my view, Lightfoot's smooth, evocative voice is one of the finest ever.
At the Palace Theater, his voice was stronger and more resonant than it was during a concert I attended at The Victory in Evansville in 2008.
The Louisville audience was very eclectic. While it included many older folks, there was a large number of second- and even third-generation fans in attendance.
When he played "Beautiful," my husband smiled as I wiped the tears off my face. For the whole time Lightfoot was onstage, I was transformed.
Once again, I was a teenager in my hippie garb, and I loved every second of it.
Although 71, Lightfoot exuded an energy that gave me a feeling I will still be able to see him in concert several more times.
"If You Could Read My Mind," Lightfoot was that young "Don Quixote," exactly as he was in the early 1970s. Lightfoot lovers will know what I mean.
