Default Taylor Mitchell

Sad news today folks.

Up and coming Toronto singer songwriter Taylor Mitchell died a tragic death after being attacked by coyotes in a Cape Breton National Park.

She was influenced by the music of Gordon Lightfoot and had recorded "Love and Maple Syrup."

Very sad indeed.

Coyotes kill Toronto singer in Cape Breton

A 19-year-old folk singer from Toronto has died after being attacked by two coyotes in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Taylor Mitchell died overnight at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
Mitchell was hiking on the Skyline Trail when she was attacked Tuesday afternoon. She was taken to the hospital in Cheticamp, then airlifted to Halifax in critical condition.
Park superintendent Helene Robichaud said Mitchell was walking the trail alone.
She said other hikers managed to scare off the coyotes and call 911.
An RCMP officer shot at one of the animals, but couldn't find the body. Robichaud said park staff put down a coyote overnight and were looking for a second one.
"We're continuing our exercise on the trail," she told CBC News on Wednesday morning.
Bob Bancroft, a retired biologist with the Department of Natural Resources, said this kind of attack is extremely rare and he's never heard of such a serious case in Nova Scotia.
Rare attack
He said coyotes, which are normally up to 50 pounds, are usually very shy, though they can be bold.
"In situations like a national park [where] usually there's no hunting and no trapping allowed, they can get used to a human presence and not have much fear of any retribution," Bancroft told CBC News.
Robichaud said park workers are puzzled.
"It could be protecting a sick animal … protecting a food source or something of that nature. But that's what we're trying to determine right now and we've been doing that since the start of this," she said.
It's unclear what happened in the woods on Tuesday.
Bancroft said coyotes team up to take down deer. He said it's possible the hiker didn't even realize what was happening.
"They may have snuck up on her and knocked her over before she even knew what happened," he said. "They may have been youngsters. They just may not have had a lot of experience or they may have just capitalized on a situation where a young person was acting vulnerable and very frightened by their presence."
He said there's a slight possibility that the animals had rabies.
Bancroft had his own run-in with a coyote several years ago when he was alone in the woods.
"A coyote came straight at me. It happened very, very quickly. It stopped and I just stood my ground, I didn't act," he said. "It actually regrouped and charged again. And I think the fact that I didn't act like a prey item convinced it to leave me alone."
Bancroft advises hikers to be alert and leave their iPods at home. He also suggests carrying a knife.
The Skyline Trail, one of the most popular trails in the park, has been closed and barricaded.

That's very sad news, but with the introduction of more "native species" back to their original habitat. I just can't help be feel its an occurance that will be happening more in the future. I heard on the news a couple weeks ago about warnings to lock up the pet cats and dogs in Northern Wisconsin because of wolf preditation. Yes getting back to nature can be exciting but it can also be dangerous as this shows. I agree with TC take a gun for protection. My condolences and prayers go out to her family, friends and fans.

It truly is Pam and the more the day goes by today the more the sadness takes hold.

Such a talented artist with a life that was in place, ready to unfold and share with the world and to have it end in such a bizarre manner is completely mind boggling.

It draws a complete blank only to be filled with a well of sorrow and sadness.

Only those who have been there would know the true pain.

It's a tragedy for sure. One coyote was shot and killed and they are searching for the other. It's sad because this this could have been possibly avoided and that the coyotes living in their home are now being hunted down. One was already killed, the other is being searched for.
When humans enter the realm of the wild animal there are inherent dangers and proper precautions must be taken. for the sake of all.

I just read his on CNN, how horribly sad. She must have been terrified and there was nothing she could do. I am quite often in defense of the animals, because they have no where to go anymore and often times it is humans that approach them. But, they were probably rabid or terribly aggressive. Coyotes usually stay away from humans, I hope they find these guys quickly before they strike again they apparently have no fear.

So sorry for her and her family.

Mother of singer killed by coyotes thanks fans
By CBC News

The mother of Taylor Mitchell, the 19-year-old folk singer who was killed by coyotes in Nova Scotia, says her daughter would have been against killing the animals responsible for her death.
The mother of Taylor Mitchell, the 19-year-old folk singer who was killed by coyotes in Nova Scotia, says her daughter would have been against killing the animals responsible for her death.

"When the decision had been made to kill the pack of coyotes, I clearly heard Taylor's voice say, 'Please don't, this is their space,"' Emily Mitchell said in a statement released Thursday.

"She wouldn't have wanted their demise, especially as a result of her own."

Taylor Mitchell, born Taylor Josephine Stephanie Luciow, succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday after being mauled by two coyotes in Cape Breton Highlands National Park the day before.

She was walking alone on the Skyline Trail when the attack happened.

Emily Mitchell described her daughter as a "seasoned naturalist" who loved the woods and had experience camping in the wilderness. She said Taylor had an appreciation for the beauty and serenity of nature.

"Tragically, it was her time to be taken from us so soon," she said.

The young singer had been on a tour through the Maritimes, including a host of gigs slated for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Her next performance was to be in Sydney, N.S., on Wednesday.

Park officials said Wednesday that other hikers managed to scare off the coyotes and call 911 following the attack. An RCMP officer arrived in time to shoot one of the animals, but its body could not be found.

Coyote killed
Mitchell, who suffered multiple bite wounds, was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, where she died.

Parks Canada conservation specialists have since shot and killed one coyote, but said they were not sure whether it was one of the animals involved in the attack. The hunt for the second coyote continued Thursday.

"We take a calculated risk when spending time in nature's fold ? it's the wildlife's terrain," Mitchell's mother wrote. She said there were no words to describe her grief.

"Taylor was my shining light, my baby, my confidante and best friend.

"My world is turned upside down and forever transformed without her. I don't know how to move forward from here, but I know that she would want that for me and I will try to do that in her memory and celebrate her life in the way she lived it ? with passion, commitment and an unbridled loving heart."
