BF: A lot of the acts from your generation seem to be trading on nostalgia. They play the same songs the same way for the last 30 years. Why haven't you ever done that? BD: I couldn't if I tried. Those guys you are talking about all had conspicuous hits. They started out anti-establishment and now they are in charge of the world. Celebratory songs. Music for the grand dinner party. Mainstream stuff that played into the culture on a pervasive level. My stuff is different from those guys. It's more desperate. Daltrey, Townshend, McCartney, the Beach Boys, Elton, Billy Joel. They made perfect records, so they have to play them perfectly ... exactly the way people remember them. My records were never perfect. So there is no point in trying to duplicate them. Anyway, I'm no mainstream artist.


Another Dylan favorite is the Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. "Gordo's been around as long as me," Dylan said. He notes the songs "Shadows," "Sundown," and "If You Could Read My Mind" as his favorites, but adds, "I can't think of any I don't like."

bob's 'perfect record' is an odd rationale...his live melodies alone generally don't even come close to resembling those recorded or written...when it comes down to songwriting, the melody foremost 'is' the song...when i saw him, i didn't even recognize Like a Rolling Stone until the tag

oh no, i've got a parody version of bob singing Shadows in my head...it's got a similar delivery to his Not Supposed to Care

all ribbing aside, bob's got good taste...and rm, i do think he'd do a hell of a cover of CYC

oh, i would make it "pro" versions only (celeb artists deserve to be put upon the tomato tossin' platter) ... what if some of these amateur folks are members here and see themselves crack the top ten in the polls....but, yeah, that was a doozey

That was a Very nice version of "Baby Step Back" the young lady posted in my opinion. It is nice to hear that song performed with just an acoustic guitar and vocals. She has a nice and soulful voice and did not use a lot of oversaturating processing/reverb (that so many of the you-tubers do). It is great to see a young person who appreciates Gord's music as well.
Hopefully, this place will be a place of encouragement for aspiring musicians instead of one that derides. Afterall, I have not seen/heard anyone that posts here who sounds like a young Gordon Lightfoot, Frank Sinatra or Joan Baez. - Love and kisses as always!

For anybody curious as I was as to why the video he selected has the title
"AVSEQ4" this almost certainly signifies that it was the fourth track on a VCD (Video CD) made from a selection of video files in VCD compliant MPEG-1 format. . When burnt onto a blank CD-R the VCD protocol creates a folder named MPEGAV which will contain each Audio/Video track as a SEQuence of DAT format files starting at AVSEQ001.dat so the uploader probably ripped the AVSEQ005.dat file from a VCD then retitled it AVSEQ04

hi Bill, hope all's well! not sure if you've gotten into youtube much or have an account (we do all wish ) but you can add comments under each video...if you pasted your above text to the gal who performed BSB (no secret, not in my top 200 GL song list but 'crap' is overly harsh, i apologize, Gord) I'll bet she would be encouraged...i could try listen endlessly and never label it as nice or very nice or soulful but i'm so glad we all differ in taste...i do love that she had fun and can't make sense of her other 3 videos just yet...also, no secret, i love altered arrangements of GL tunes...if she heard some of the more interesting ones she might change her tune...but sincerely, BSB is a good tune for Gord to keep in the live show, the majority of the crowd are groovin and tappin their toes...whereas the minority, lie myself could listen to 90 minutes solid of the more sedate selections and never yawn at all

I guess another thought on all of this is to consider if she was your daughter how would you feel if a bunch of so called adults started making fun of her fine efforts for no reason. Not good about it I am sure.

In the interview Dylan mentions Prine's tune "Lake Marie".

It's from the album "Lost Dogs And Mixed Blessings".

Here's a nice version of it. On this night, Prine and his cohorts get to SSSSSSizzlin'' (you'd have to hear the album version to understand)

i personally like it when a crowd is subdued and not hootin and hollerin during narrative song performances...that's if i'm at a paid sit down event...if it's at a tavern, well, what do you expect

yea, i dunno of many words with stronger connotative meaning than sizzle or sharp, enhanced further by the drawn out sssss....wonderful phrases and waterfront imagery, no matter how disjointed the poetry appears on the 'surface'

my university room mate was a Prine freak...on overload of Prine spinning in our residence may have been the cause of redirecting my major interest from math to more subjective studies

this classic Lake tune had my perpetually humming mind segue into Down by the River...interesting words here by Young which i believe are universal to not just Dylan and he but any songwriter (regarding the 'force' which sprouts and drives the creation of a song)
