The Canadian Folk Music Awards were handed out Sunday night at a ceremony in St.John's. The big winner was the late Toronto-based fiddler Oliver Schroer, who won in the Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year and the Pushing The Boundaries categories for his album Hymns and Hers.
Klezmer music also fared well last night. David Buchbinder's Odessa/Havana, critically-acclaimed klezmer meets Cuba ensemble was named World Group of the Year. Montreal's klezmer/gypsy/jazz group Sagapool took home the award for Instrumental Group of the Year and The Sisters of Sheynville, an all-female klezmer sextet took Vocal Group of the Year.
And where would Canadian Folk Music be without Gordon Lightfoot? The legendary Canadian singer was feted with CFMA Classic Canadian Album Award for his album Lightfoot!, his debut release from 1967.
Other winners included Montreal's Michael Jerome Brown (Solo Artist of the Year), Albertan Corb Lund (English Songwriter of the Year), and Tannis Slimmon of Guelph (Contempoary Singer of the Year). Album of the Year winners were Luke Doucet and the White Falcon for Blood's Too Rich (Contemporary Album) and Genticorum for La Bibournoise (Traditional).
