This was my third concert this week and fourth this year which are both personal records.
Gord's voice at this show was the best I heard all week. He had the night off on Thursday and maybe that was the difference. Only once, and I don't remember the song, did I hear anything like the scratchiness he had earlier in the week, and it didn't last long.
My friends and I had front row seats right in front of Mike Heffernan and it was cool to be that close and see the facial expressions and watch Gord's rhythm work on the guitar.

Gord seemed to have a lot of energy and they did the show with NO intermission. When the "Fitz" came and went without a break, I worried that we were going to see a shortened show but my concerns were unfounded. There WERE a couple of breaks as Gord signed autographs for a couple of women who brought things to the stage. One young lady must have had a half dozen or more things to sign (I think one item was a mouse pad) and while Gord took them to a stool and signed them, she shouted at the top of her voice that she has loved Gord since she was twelve years old, she wanted to marry him, he's the greatest, etc. When he finally signed all her stuff, he came back to the mike to discover that he no longer had his pick. He went back to the stool and located it. When there were further attempts at autographs, security stepped in and that was the end of that.

Late in the show, Gord told of recently speaking with Kris Kristofferson and finding out that they would be appearing in California in some of the same venues about a week apart. Kris said he would try to come see Gord's show. So Gord, wanting to be ready for such an eventuality, has been working on Me and Bobby Mcgee and we got to hear it. Also, the crowd hummed along at the end with the "na na na, na na na" part and it sounded way cool. It seemed as if Gord extended it a bit since it sounded so good.

I first heard the "How long was the "hair" on the rabbit?" joke at Joliet IL on Sunday night. The answer there was 3 seconds. But in St. Louis and Kansas City, the answer was 2 and a half seconds. I can only conclude that Missouri is a hare faster than Illinois.

I guess that's about it. Had a great week of Gord's shows that I'd been waiting for all summer I guess. Hope to see him again next year.

Steve

The Kris/Bobby McGee possibility was something I was told about in Buffalo a couple of weeks ago and I have since spent many a sleepless night wishing I could attend the show that Kris might attend!
My ultimate concert! 1973 redux ! Gord and Kris! I don't imagine they'll duet tho..but ya never know..Gord got up onstage at Massey in 1973 to sing it with Kris so it might just be 'payback' time..
be still my heart..
for the love of gawd would someone PLEASE make sure to get a video of it if it does happen?!?!?

I was watching these 'unplugged at studio 330' videos just this aft..

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the great summary of the KC concert. I was surprised that Gord skipped the intermission. I wonder if that was driven by a need of the venue or municipality to have the concert let out at a certain time, or whether it was driven by Gord. Back in the 70s Gord used to play about 1hr 15min to 1hr 20min without an intermissionn. From the set list it sounds like he must have gone at least 1hr 40min or a bit longer.

That takes some physical stamina to stand there and sing that long. Gord definitely recognizes the importance of physical conditioning to meet that standard -- and he meets it well.

I wish we had been privileged to hear Bobby McGee in St. Louis two nights earlier. But I'm happy for you and those in attendance in KC.

Casino shows are almost always only one set, with a time limit of 90 minutes. This show, however, had 24 songs; usually the casino shows are about 21. My guess is that if it did spill over a few minutes, Gord was given permission to stretch the 90 minutes a bit, but they wouldn't have wanted a 20 minute intermission as well. The fact that he did 24 songs straight is great news, and it tells me he is 100% recovered from whatever was bothering him a week or two ago.
