Of Course, Mama

Howdy,

I'm my mom's caregiver since her May 04 fall resulting in broken hips. This is Mama today. So, at her request:

My mother found this small poem among her belongings. She's had it for many, many years and asked if it were OK to share it with you all.

Of course, Mama

Thank you, God for little things
That often come our way
The things we take for granted
But don't mention when we pray

The unexpected courtesy
The thoughtful, kindly deed
A hand reached out to help us
In the time of sudden need

Oh, make us more aware, dear God
Of little daily graces
That come to us with Sweet Surprise
From never-dreamed-of places

PS: This may be a Christian prayer, but gratefullness is open to all to practice.

Hi Rez, tell your mom I'm glad she shared that. It's a good thought and true. I think the happiest people are those who find joy in the small things, the simple things. Good reminder for us all.

What brings me Joy brings her Joy. And it runs both ways.

Two months ago Mama had another near-fatal heart attack.
She's back home now about a month.
Very scary in the ER to see her get Zapped by the Zappers
- twice -
to get her heart to stop racing.

The ER Dr. was great.
He explained to me each thing he was doing
and what machine numbers to keep a watch on - and why.
Man, is that rare in a Dr. . . .

Since her return home, she's very weak. Physically, the travail didn't push her all the way back to step one . . . it just feels like it to her.
What is effected heavily is her emotions.

Pastor Chuck at Calvary Costa Mesa and I talked via phone.
and both agreed to put any plans we had on hold for now . . .
either way the Lord chooses.

I won't be filling in on organ at church for awhile,
because that takes about a 7-8 hr commitment
on any given Sunday [all three services, etc]

Also, the Late Night Radio Outreach is on hold for now.
Chuck simply did the Biblical thing: He told me the truth in love.
He didn't want to see me crash and burn like the last time
I got swamped by more than my body and emotions could bear.

My ministry is here and now w/ Mama. It's still
Fullness of Joy. I'm living the example of God's Promise
to bring Good from Evil in the lives of those who are steadfast in the Faith.

Rez, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's set back! Please give her my best and a hug.

It's too bad about your plans having to be put on hold, but I agree that taking care of your mom is most important and you have to take care of yourself by not not filling your plate too full in order to be able to take care of her. It's just a temporary thing - she'll get back on her feet in no time, I'm sure.

I took care of my grandmother the last eight years of her life after numerous strokes. One must make personal sacrifices, but they are well worth it. I wouldn't have done anything differently and I wouldn't trade one moment of taking care of her for anything in the world. I'm sure you feel the same way.

Ditto from here. My mom had a stroke at the comparatively young age of 68 and is still with us 10+ years later, thanks in large part to the care my late father provided, as well as my (single) sister Joan (who looked after them both while working full-time) and the rest of us siblings who take turns spelling Joan on a regular basis so she has some sort of life of her own. Mom's short-term memory is shot to blazes but we still laugh and kid and she gets out to the mall with us every few weeks and to the nearby casino on her birthday every May - and looks forward to it (she should - she's usually the winner.)

ER docs are the best; for the most part, they are very good at explaining in plain English what they are doing and why and what the options are. Glad to hear your mom is still with you. My dad lived with congestive heart failure for more than 15 years, with two or three hospital stays for fluid accumulation. He died at home after a full day of having breakfast with friends, visiting with his brothers and flirting with "my bride" as he called mom. They just missed their 53rd wedding anniversary. It's a wonderful memory not everyone is blessed to have.

Very sorry to hear about your mother's setback, but very glad to hear that she's still alive. We also like the poem very much; if she has more she can share with us, please tell her to do so!!!
