Where does everyone live?

Just curious! It would be helpful to me to know where we all reside, so we could plan concerts, etc. Anyone interested?

Hi Sean,

The 'member profile' has a spot for this information. e.g. mine says Salisbury, MD which is on the eastern shore of Maryland on the East Coast of the USA. I've always assumed that people leave that out because they don't want anyone to know ?? And of course the 'unregistered' crowd must have reasons for not registering, although except for the trolls I couldn't say why. But i'ts a good idea - let's see how many responses you get - and if they match their profiles,LOL.

I'm in La Mesa, CA - about 12 miles east of downtown San Diego. (I'm pretty sure I changed it when I moved from NH, so it should match my profile )

The northeast tip of Maine, about a mile west of the New Brunswick border and 50 miles south of the Quebec border.

I am in the LA area, Marina Del Rey. I live next to the water, looking out on thousands of yachts. They say there are over 6,000 in this, the world's largest man-made marina. I just learned that Johnny Carson's yacht, the Serengeti, is right outside the window.
I hope no one thinks I am prying. I read these threads and imagine where you all are.
while it is LA and the weather in the marina is generally 10 -15 degrees cooler than inland, I was from Chicago, grew up in Atlanta, and have lived in Washington,DC, New York, Stamford,CT, Houston,TX, Austin,TX but reall miss the east with four seasons. Someday I will get to Canada.

Yeah, the only way it could be any more opposite ends of the country is if I started out living next door to Cathy instead of in NH People keep asking me if SoCal is prettier than New England and I have to tell them that they both have their distinct beauty - one is not better than the other. I do miss the quaint charm of New England and of course the autumn. However, I don't miss having to shovel snow or scrape ice off the windshield. Although, I can always drive 45 minutes east to the mountains and enjoy both autumn colors and snow if I get to missing it too much. San Diego is the only place I've ever lived that has consistant, perfect weather - 70's and 80 during the day and anywhere from 40's to 60's at night and there is usually a nice breeze and lots of sun.

It's not much more expensive to live as a whole, unless you want to buy a house (or buy gas, these days). I saw one the other day that was smaller in square footage than my apartment and they wanted $275,000 for it. It probably would have gone for $70,000 in other parts of the country. The other thing I had to get used to was sales tax and state income tax - NH has neither.

Sean,
I'm going to California in September to visit Derek. We are planning a Lighthead get together, with lots of guitar playing and singing. It will be held in the Palo Alto area. I know that's quite a jaunt for you, but believe me, it would be worth attending. Can you imagine several guitarists whom all know how to play Lightfoot tunes extremely well. No asking, "What key are you playing it in?" "What is the chord progression?" "Where do you put the capo?" You should think about coming up for a day or two.

Not really. We would just have to be committed to doing so. If 70+ could meet in Toronto from all corners of the USA, several parts of England, Ireland, Australia, Austria, and probably a few other countries I'm forgetting, than we can find a way to do it - actually in smaller gatherings, we've already done it....a bunch of us from Northern and Southern CA, Maine, Texas, CT, Georgia, NJ, NY, IL and a couple of other Midwest states that I can't think of right now, plus Canada, met in Saratoga Springs, NY - not only once, but some of us went three times - and had a blast! You just have to pick a date and a location and folks have to want to meet enough to plan their schedules around it and be willing to travel. Heck, as I mentioned in another thread, I came from NH to meet up with two internet friends from Nothern CA to see Gord at Humphries just over three years ago. Anything can be done if enough people want to do it.

I live in Colorado (about 25 miles form the now infamous town of Granby) I love to travel if I get enough notice to. I went to Orillia for a concert, by myself. Would be nice though if we could get it set up for somewhere Gord is playing, when he's back.

Big Bear is a two to three hour drive from L.A. depending on which part of L.A. you're talking about, which freeway you take and what time of day it is. It's in the San Bernardino County mountains in what's known as the Inland Empire.

We didn't have anywhere near normal rain and snow fall this winter, but it was better than it has been in six years, hence the explosion of pine pollen this year. I can't imagine what it would look like after a "normal" winter. I literally watched clouds of pollen come down out of the trees when the wind blew this afternoon. And my red car is now orange.

Wow. Thanks, Sean! I'm glad you liked what you heard.
Most of this stuff was recorded live at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs (during a Lightfoot tribute with some newsgroupers) or at Val Magee's house at her very cool little studio, and a couple songs were recorded on my home PC. I have a CD coming out that was recorded at Grant Avenue Studios, with Bob Doidge playing high string, bass, drums, and various other instruments. (What a musician he is!).

My guitar of choice is a Martin D-15 that has suffered more than its fair share of accidents. But it's like a cat... it has 9 lives (and it's on #8 right now). I also have an OM28V, but I still find myself reaching for the D-15. I just like that earthy, dark tone. (And that mahogany smells good, doesn't it, Char)?
I will keep you posted on the California trip.

Sean, now you know why I list Cathy as one of my favorite female performers in another thread. Wait until you meet her in person - she's just as nice as she is talented and loads of fun (are you blushing yet, Cathy? )The other players I've had the pleasure of meeting are just as fun and talented - Melissa, Derek, Ed, Matt, Bill, David, Jim D - all great talents and some of them write as well. And we can't forget Jenney - I don't think she plays guitar, but she sings one heck of a rendition of Build Me Up Buttercup

Some of the players I mentioned and a few others would meet in a yahoo chat room and utilize the "voice" capability to take turns singing and playing songs. There was always a lot of Lightfoot songs, but we found that we shared similar taste in other music as well, so it was never limited to Lightfoot tunes. It was a lot of fun and a great way to get to know one another. With everyday life going on in different time zones, it was just difficult finding a day and time that worked for the greatest number of folks who were interested in participating, so it's been a while since we gathered. Not being a player, I was usually the captivated audience
