1. Mariah Carey
2. Judy Collins
3. Janis Joplin
4. Karen Carpenter
5. Olivia Newton John
6. Alicia Keys
7. Cher
8. Barbra Streisand
9. Tina Turner
10.Linda Ronstadt

Just so it's clear, these 10 singers I like on an equal level and were the foremost in my head. I like other female artists too but there's too many to mention. This is not a standard "top 10" list. Been me,later!
10.

I'm going to be honest. I only have one album from a female artist (Michelle Branch) but all other albums I have are from male singers. I simply prefer to listen to male voices for some mysterious reason. I don't know why. So therefore I don't really have any fave female artists! I like men's stuff LOL

Funny you'd say that Shazia...I kinda feel the same way. Obviously, from my previous post...I do like female vocalists but I too would rather hear a man sing.

Someone did mention Karen Carpenter in this post along with Olivia Newton John and I have to concur. To me...Karen Carpenter is one of the greatest vocalists of all time regardless of gender.

I hope I didn't sound arrogant typing that. Maybe I'm a hot blooded female LOL who thinks hearing men sing is more satisfying or something Besides, it's not whether which gender's vocalists I think is better, it's just which one I prefer...it's just an idiosyncracy of mine, forgive me.

CDs by female artists aren't ones I reach for very often - guess that's why my list is so short. Especially when you consider that two of them are friends (which is not to say that's why I like them, just pointing out that of the "commercial" female artists out there, there's not many I really care for )

I'm a "hot blooded male" but I have to say when it comes to tunes I'd prefer to hear a man...guess thats just me. As for Rosanne Cash...you could say its in the genes.

Well, okay, I have got another confession to make LOL.

Before I ever bought my first Lightfoot album (Sundown), I was going to buy a CD by Dido. But after buying a couple of Gordon Lightfoot albums, I have put Dido on hold until I have collected as many Lightfoot albums as possible, that's how important this is!

Great topic especially for us men!!
Even if it led to Mr Letcher revealing his age. Brenda Lee indeed!!
From the albums I have collected I'd list
1.Stevie Nicks
2 Juice Newton

3.Lesley Duncan (a little known UK singer)

This scan does not do justice to the real album sleeve it is a gorgeous green in fact and makes this one of my very favo(u)rite album covers
4 Karen Carpenter
5.Sarah McLachlan
6.Jewel
7.Suzy Bogguss
8.Faith Hill
and even the occasional
9.Shania and
10.Celon rendition!!
I am also rather partial to Dido's White Flag
Duh
I also forgot Carly Simon...
And I heard t'other day that her very nice Martha's Vinyard concert (on a pier) that I have on a treasured PAL VHS video cassette is about to be or has just been issued as a DVD a DVD1 I hope not a DVD3 3rd rate version
Sorry Dunkin I could not resist that

original Suzanne Vega/Alanis
Morrisette/Jewel/Michelle Branch type singer, who by the way was on Conan the other night! 25 years later and she's still got it and still looks the same! Oh!..and Annie Lennox! Been me,later!

Here are some of my favorites in no order:
Beth Hart (a powerful voice)
Buffy Sainte-Marie (an acquired taste if you don't like vibrato)
Lori Mckenna (a very percussive guitarist, and with a brand new album just out)
Mary Gauthier (not a blow-you-out-of-your-seat voice, but very meaningful lyrics)
Gillian Welch (took a while for her voice to click, but wonderful harmonies with David Rawlings)
Jewel (Pieces Of You was her best, especially if you find the vinyl edition with five extra tracks that aren't on the cd)
Tracy Chapman (especially if you get a hold of some of her solo acoustic shows)
Kasey Chambers
Lynn Morris (bluegrass band with her husband, five albums, and they're friends of mine)

There is a list of some of my favorites, so check them out if you've never heard any of them. I'll probably think of more after I hit the submit button, but these are the ones I've been listening to lately.
Matthew
