I seem to be loaning out my grantwriting/fundraising skills to a bluegrass organization who wants to digitalize and make available rare recordings to the online trading community.

Fundraising and grantwriting I understand, I know a fair amount about obtaining rights ect., but I know bupkiss about the whole concept of MP3's, downloading, trading etc. Never downloaded a song in my life. I'm looking for someone I can ask really stupid questions of. I have to understand what they want to do with this music before I can figure out who to approach and how.

they're a bootleg company and they want you to give them the stuff so they can make glass-mastered CDs which they will sell for a quite a high press and make lotsa $$$.

what are the offering you for them??

Not necessarily. Most old bluegrass music is public domain. You can pretty much do whatever you prefer to do with this music.
There is a group of banjoists who post their mp3s on a site called Banjo Addiction, but one of the prerequisites is that all tunes must be public domain, so they don't have to get tied up in the costly licensing process.

I have no clue what you're talking about.

It's a non profit status pending organization who is currently negotiating to buy about 1000 tapes recorded at various outdoor and indoor venues across the south in the 50's by one gentleman, obviously a bluegrass fan. The analog tapes are legit as are the amazaing variety of artists that are on them. Once the tapes are purchased they'll be digitally mastered and the music offered through a website for educational and entertainment purposes at no cost with the original tapes donated to a non profit Bluegrass Museum. The mastered work will be available for download and or trade; two concepts I know nothing about. It's a race against time as the gentleman is quite old as are the tapes.

What they want from me is fundraising advice. Who do we approach about funding this project, how do we write a grant, what do we need our website to look like etc. In order to do that, I need to understand the ultimate goal of the organization which is to make rare recordings available at no cost through an internet site.
