Anybody else having problems accessing the web pages on Google today? I can get to the groups and news portions via dejanews but can't call up www.google.com (with or without www). Search.com is okay but AskJeeves is also a no-response. Everything else [including Corfid] works fine.

I been on it several times today with no problems pulling anything up.

I usually prefer Alta Vista though. The last 2 days I have tried Google because of everybody talking about "googling".

What makes Google different than Alta Vista? I don't see any differences.

Problem solved - our computer had been infected by a Trojan that's been hijacking users from search engines to alternate DNS sites. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn't yet have a patch for this one but I emailed the Google support folks and, bless 'em, they came back with 2 ways to check/fix it, one courtesy of an article by Symantec. I tracked down the offending hosts file, deleted the appropriate lines, saved the file again, et voila!
I used to use Alta Vista but converted to Google simply because it works better for me - more accurate hits, less distracting fluff (although the site's growing so big so fast I worry it's losing the simplicity that was it's great strength.)

Seen the new G-5 dual processors? By bro-in-law has one and loves it. Like you say, with a MAC, no need to be very concerned with all that spy crap, viruses etc.

Haven't seen it but hear good things. It'll be a while before we buy another computer though - I'm still looking for a job in this lovely 'jobless recovery'.

The new G5's look like a high performance automobile. Seriously.

When I finally made the decision to close one business and sell the other back in 2000, I was forced to go out and work for someone else. It took seven months to find a "career job" and I was lucky to find it in that time-frame. I tried to get some "get by jobs" like working in stores etc., but nobody would take a chance because they said that I would not stick around because of the money etc. I almost felt like I had to re-write my resume and lie to make it look like I just held service jobs barely scraping by.

The economy is getting better but you are pretty specialized in what you do so I can well imagine the tight market your in. Same was true with me and would not want to revisit those times.

Well I'd pretty much decided I wasn't going to continue as a medical librarian but hoped to find a library job or something similar at our community college or maybe Syracuse University which is not too far. I'm back-up relief for my sister who cares for our mother who had a stroke 8 years ago, so I'm not planning on relocating. I lost one job to another applicant who had been doing the exact job at a neighboring college and wanted to move home (but they loved my credentials) and been told by another I'm overqualified (sheesh). I'm waiting on results from a civil service exam for Registrar of Vital Statistics, which would be a good fit for me, pays reasonably well and is based nearby. I just have to beat out the other 30 folks who tested with me, or at least land in the top 3 to qualify for interview. Meanwhile my husband is working steady (for the state) so we have an income with benefits. Having been partially laid off back in '92 I learned to keep debt low and savings high so we're okay. I just have to remind the kids from time to time that I have no income to fund their wants.

Microsoft.com now has the patch to prevent this virus from infecting your PC. There's also 2 new patches for Media Player, which also has a security flaw.

Sooner or latter, Bill Gates is gonna get this right.
