I'm wondering how many of you Lightfoot fans are familiar with Dave Mallett. I was recently at a small house concert where Dave played for a group of diehard lightheads who had reserved the weekend to see Lightfoot in Toronto, but of course, were not able to. David was there to ease their pain with his own renditions of the songs of the person who greatly inspired his songwriting. He did this so well, but also, not surprisingly, won over a bunch of new fans with his own amazing compositions.

I was one of those Lightfoot fans won over at that house concert. I walked in totally unfamiliar with Dave Mallett's music and walked out a new fan with two CDs.
Much thanks to Jenney and Val (and of course, Dave, himself) for making that possible. It's good to see you here at this little cyber water cooler, Joan, and it was good to meet you Saturday night along with the other Mallett fans who joined us for this wonderful house concert! Dave did a fine job on several of our favorite Lightfoot songs and definitely eased the pain of not being in Toronto.

I am not overly familiar with David Mallett's work. However the name rang a bell. And after much searching the file between my ears, I found a track on a John Denver album (JD or John Denver) circa 1979, 'The Garden Song'. I assume this to be the same guy. If the body of his work is as good as this, he is worth checking out

"The Garden Song" is David's most covered tune, and a fine one. However, he is a prolific, original, and extremely talented song writer as well as performer, with many more songs that I feel deserve more recognition. Enjoy for yourself at www.davidmallett.com. Janis (Joan) I have just perused the DM web site. I see that there are 7 CDs currently available. Please recommend one as a good jump off point.

I usually recommend "
In The Falling Dark" as a good one, but I also like "Parallel Lives" and "Ambition". It's like trying to pick your favorite Lightfoot cd.
One other song that John Denver recorded of Dave's is "You Say That the Battle is Over". Beautiful song.

Jenny, thank you for your recommedations, I will certainly check them out.
I was intrigued by you mentioning that JD had also recorded 'You Say That The Battle Is Over.' I have a few John Denver albums (vinyl) and checked them, and found that song on 'Autograph.' Much to my delight I found another David Mallett song on that album, 'The Ballad Of St. Anne's Reel.' Two very good songs

NSCD, ditto to Jenney's recommendations and the difficulty in choosing just one. In the Falling Dark and Ambition are studio albums, with full sounds and great arrangements. Parallel Lives is live and is pure Dave, 2 guitars and a bass. You wouldn't go wrong with any of these. For that matter, all of Dave's recordings are terrific, there are no duds. He has a remarkable ability to write timeless tunes. Enjoy, Joan
