Hi - just finished wiping my eyes and blowing my nose...it was SO good to
hear his voice again!
He's sounding VERY upbeat and is looking forward to his new album coming out
in Jan/Feb./04.He has more surgeries, one in the new year and in a years
time will know if he can sing and play. at that time a decision will be made
and early 2005 at Massey will be the debut of Gord on stage again. that's
what he's hoping for.
He loves the Tribute album as well.

Does anyone know anything about this upcoming album other than the fact that it's coming out? Any new songs? New re-recordings?

AFAIK, all new songs (new as in never recorded by him before though some may have been performed in concert - No Hotel, maybe??)
Wish I'd heard the interview - will it be archived, anybody know?

the show tape can be purchased from:
"Audio cassette copies of Sounds Like Canada may be purchased from Bowden Tape Services at 1-800-363-1530. Specify the name of the program and the date of broadcast. This information may be found in our show logs."
My dear John F. will hopefully be able to let us know if he captured it on his computer and if he can magically do something to let you all hear it.

Thanks Char, I just ordered my copy. Wish we could get your stations here. Was this advertised or did you just happen on it today? Please keep us posted you are our Gord line (as in lifeline ha ha, nevermind) in Canada!

Thank you, Char, for the encouraging words. It's so exciting to think of the possibilities ahead. I still pray daily for Cordon's peace of mind and contentment, most of all, but also that we may see and hear him again.

Anyone willing to make a copy of this tape so we all don't have to shell out $30 for one? Postage and tape costs will be paid for of course. Let me know if you'd be willing to help a fellow Lightfoot fan overseas. Thanks.

Hey, that's a great idea! Why not make copies of all of GL's CDs too-who wants to pay all that money, he's got enough anyway...
That's the problem today. We come up with a thousand ways to rationalize stealing. That interview/recording is copyrighted and is owned by the broadcast company. That's taking food out of people's mouths.
Sleight of hand artist Ricky Jay spoke once about meeting a hack magician who was copying one of his performances word for word and telling him how great his act was going over. "What if I came in and stole your television set" fumed Ricky. "What are you talking about?" said the hack. "You stole my television set!" yelled Ricky.
Just because you haven't developed the same imaginary personal connection in your mind with a corporation as you have with GL doesn't give you the right to ask people to help you steal something that doesn't belong to you and or take something you are unwilling to pay for. You wouldn't do it to GL--then again, maybe you would.
You can call it bootlegging, swapping, copying but why don't we call it by its real name. Stealing.

If it's archived, just download it to your PC and then burn it onto a disc so you can listen to it wherever you want. Being that you can buy a tape of it for $30, I bet it won't be available to listen to on their site. Being that this interview is being made available for a price, one person buying it and giving it away is stealing. It's certainly not taking food away from anybody because if Gord never did the interview, people would still be eating and not starving. However, it is keeping a small amount of profit from being distributed among certain people. If I wanted it, I would just buy it.
NextSaturday, do you have any bootlegs?

"The definition of a “broadcast transmission” brings us to the battle between broadcasters and the music industry that recently came to a head with the Copyright Office’s ruling that a “broadcast transmission” includes only over-the-air transmissions made by an FCC-licensed broadcaster—not online transmissions by such broadcaster. The Copyright Office justified this ruling by stating that once a broadcaster streams its programming online, it no longer meets the definition of a “broadcast transmission” as applied in the DMCA because in doing so, it is not a “terrestrial broadcast.” "
They're talking specifically about songs, not necessarily what would come under the heading of 'talk' radio. There are shades of grey here - not simply whether or not the content is covered by US Copyright Law or - this IS Canada - other international copyright laws (which differ), the commercial distribution of a public transmission - in the sense that the CBC is publicly funded so the corporation here, in a very broad sense, is the Canadian people. Then there's the issue of temporary cacheing. Back when I was dealing with this as a librarian, PBS used to grant permission to record and keep a program on a temporary basis (30 days as I recall) for educational purposes, providing the tapes were erased or taped over when the limit ran out. Some health video producers allowed in-house broadcasting gratis for patient education, others required a minimal license fee, others said buy a full-price copy and do what you want with it. And what about TIVO? See http://www.europemedia.net/shownews.asp?ArticleID=16306 for an article on how radio may get its own version of TIVO and the copyright questions that raises.
All said, the CBC in its entirety costs each Canadian citizen 9 cents a day (2001 annual report). I'd be delighted to forward my $.066 [US] for a few minutes' worth of Gord.
