Wouldn't it be cool if...

-Gord released an album about his being in the hospital and about how life is great(I've said it before but I'm saying it again).

-Gord did 3rd re-recordings of the following songs: Endless Wire, All The Lovely Ladies, The Pony Man, Wreck of the E.F., and a re-recording of East Of Midnight.

-Writing a song about someone getting paralyzed( I'm feeling emotional for I just got done seeing that drunk driving comercial about the boy, Very sad ).

-Remember in the songbook he talked about all the songs in the songbook(If you could read my mind, gord speaks about his music)If they had a booklet in book stores where he talked about ALL his songs like that.

-If that ?Gordon footLight? guy that replied some time ago was the real Gordon Lightfoot

continue, please.....

I think an accoustic version of Endless Wire might sound nice.

"Gord released an album about his being in the hospital and about how life is great(I've said it before but I'm saying it again)."--No.

"Gord did 3rd re-recordings of the following songs: Endless Wire, All The Lovely Ladies, The Pony Man, Wreck of the E.F., and a re-recording of East Of Midnight."--No. Earlier in his career, Lightfoot has already made the best recordings possible of these songs. He cannot do them any better now.

"Writing a song about someone getting paralyzed( I'm feeling emotional for I just got done seeing that drunk driving comercial about the boy, Very sad )."--No. From a marketing standpoint, he would would be setting fire to any possibilities of a future career. Besides, what would ever make you think about Lightfoot writing such a song? Or anybody for that matter. Kinda strange for such a young person to always be writing about suicide, plane crashes, being in the hospital etc.

"If that ?Gordon footLight? guy that replied some time ago was the real Gordon Lightfoot"--No.

Gotta say I disagree with alot of the ideas you have too, however....

If an autobiography (or even a biography written by someone who knows him well) ever came out that included alot of discussion about the inspirations for many of his songs, I'd be in the front of the line to get a copy!

DMD3,I hesitated on replying to this 'cause I couldn't think of how to reply. Now,I have an answer. Gord doing a song about being paralysed would be like if Gloria Estefan did a song about her tour bus crashing back in 1990! She almost ended up paralysed and recovered (miraculously) within a year. When she put out a new CD she didn't dwell on the sadness of what happened to her. What would she have sang? "I was in this crash inside a movin' bus,it's a wonder we're alive, anyone of us?" No. Instead she recorded,"Coming Out Of The Dark",which means she's happy to be alive and moving forward. Gordon, most likely will do the same. Also,no he's done quite enough re-records. In fact,he's done more than any other artist in history! Goes with the old saying of,"Going To The Well Once to Often". Wells are filled with water but eventually they run dry. Been me,later!

DMD3,

It would be cool if you went out in the sunshine with a CD player and played all Gord's happy songs for all the girls at your school. Dance with them on the school lawn, roll down a hill laughing. And when you get funny looks invite everyone home for a Gordon Lighfoot party. Lighten up dude, life is way too short.

Peace

Bill

Actually, how many "happy songs" does Gord have? That's a good topic for another thread!

I think that coping with heartache is perhaps Gord's main theme, and although I'm not even an armchair shrink, I'd venture to guess that that theme is what attracted DMD3 to Gord's music in the first place. Like Eric Clapton wanting the blues, as a youngster and ever since. It helps with the coping.

Don't feel you *must* "cheer up," DMD3, but understand that when we mention it, it's just because most of us are so much older. We've been there, and we would just *love* to have a few of those precious days back when we (hell, *I*) just moped around and listened to music and watched TV (no fiddling around on the Web back then for me--it was the dark ages of the 70s!)

I consider songs like: Christian Island, Bend In The Water, Blackberry Wine, Slide On Over, 14 Karat Gold and many others to be "happy" songs. Perhaps upbeat would be a better word. But all Gord's songs cheer me up, regardless of the subject matter.
And one of the best cures for the blues is to share them. Sitting around pining for whatever it is you can't have just leads deeper into the blues. Taking it outside in the sun always makes things look brighter. But I'm an optimist and I guess cheering up is not for everyone.

Race Among The Ruins, Too Much To Lose, Baby Its Alright and Its Worth Belevin are great bets, I've tried listening to them and it works.
A lot of the sad songs do make it worse but for some reason, 'If You Could Read My Mind' seems to make it better even though it is a sad song.
