I don't normally track the doings at the Cannes Film Festival but this was in the Google news under Gord's name. NOT a film I'd be likely to see or have any interest in though I do wonder exactly how Vincent Gallo wangled the rights. See article at http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0323/peranson.php

Sheesh.

I'm with Michigan! Let's look at the broader idea here. If this film were to get released in America, become successful and get Oscar(c) nominated it might actually (if whomever is in charge decides to release a single) revive "Beautiful" and make it the top 10 hit that it should have been 30 years ago! At the very least, top 20. Yes,also younger people in their early 20's and lower may discover the song and want to know more about Gordon Lightfoot. I agree the name of the film is corny at best (I don't find "Bunny" funny or "punny" ) Let's just see what happens. Maybe nothing but you never know! It's been the B! Catch ya on the flipside of Sundown! (P.S.-I'm getting this movie when it's out on DVD!)

This movie is now in release. Ebert & Roper reviewed it this weekend. Ebert hated this film at Cannes, but the film is 28 minutes shorter and now he likes it. Roper still hates it, but he thought the scene with Lightfoot's music was "artistic."

Walter I'd save seeing this movie for a day with inclement "weather" (sic) whether you like it or not.
This critic obviously didn't

Would Gordon have to give his permission for the song to be used?

Well, they had to get permission somewhere along the lines to use the song, I'm sure he had to have known about it at the very least. hmmmm. There's a thought, eh?

The passage where Bud slowly, slowly approaches an interchange outside Chicago, in a driving rain, as Gordon Lightfoot's tune "Beautiful" plays in its entirety is--well--beautiful. The drama of America's landscape is heightened by Lightfoot's uncharacteristic decision to use some minor chords. (The unaccustomed sharps and flats must have drawn blood from the ears of his hard-core fans.)

Well, that's an excerpt from a review of THE BROWN BUNNY. I did email the editor to let the reviewer know that, far from drawing blood from the ears, "Beautiful" is a fan favorite.
