For those of us who didn't buy the Martin GL guitar, it is featured on page 76 of the book, "Martin Guitar Masterpieces: A Showcase of Artists' Editions, Limited Editions, and Custom Guitars"
by Dick Boak (Author)
The author states that they highly underestimated the demand for this guitar when the set the edition number.

Several of the dealers I talked to when I was trying to get one told me that it sold out within a couple days after Martin released them. They said the D-18 GL sold out faster than any signature edition they,ve ever issued. I think I may have got one of,if not the last one that was available.(when they first came out)Though my wife mentioned a couple times about a GL guitar being for sale,I did'nt check it out until pretty late in the game.I thought it was one of Gord's old guitars and would be more than I could ever afford to swing. As soon as I found out what it really was,I contacted Martin and they sent me "The List" of dealers who had them. The day I got the List I started at the top and began calling and calling and calling .It did'nt look like I even had a chance, but I would not give up until checked them all. I could have saved a lot of money if I would have started at the bottom. When I finally got Jay from Craig's Music in Wetherford Texas and He said "Yes,we have one",.....I really can't put it in words....When ever I get to make the trip to visit my Brother in Texas,I will most definately be making a visit to thank Jay....He made my day....

I think the last one sold by a store was sold in October, 2001. Is that after you, Iron? That month I got an email from someone saying that he had found a store web site listing a D-18GL for sale, and that maybe someone I knew would be interested. Well, I went to the site and sure enough it was there. But I thought, "yeah, right ... the site probably hasn't been updated in a year". So I sent an e-mail saying, "You don't really have a D-18GL for sale, do you?". Boy was I surprised when I got back the reply, "Yes, we do" ... then he filled me in on the story ... #1 on his list, the guy who put down a deposit, had changed his mind. #2 couldn't afford it just then. So I told a friend from the newsgroup about it and the rest is history. Roy is one of the west coast contingent of Lightheads. He is one of the lucky one who gets to jam with other D-18GL owners!

I had to do a little research. It must have been about 3/26/01 give or take, when I found it.The temporary receipt I first received is dated for 3/30/01 and that would have been a few days after I first found it.I still have the "list" and I did indeed call every store on the list except for the U.K.,Japan,and the two in Germany. Now that my memory has been stirred,,,when I first contacted Craigs Music, the salesman told me he was pretty sure it was still available but that I would have to call back in a 1/2 hour or so to talk to the manager to make sure.(that was a long 1/2 hour) It was during this time that I called the rest on the list.
As for the purchase date You are referring to,I don't know if that would officialy qualify in the category of "last",being that it was a backed out of prior deal? I cannot say for sure, but this was probably one of the two or 3 later callbacks I got from being on about 20 waiting lists I was on ,just in case of an event such as the one You refered to.The store in Nazereth had 20 on their list...
Anyway,it really does'nt matter to me if I got the last one or not,but its fun to talk and wonder about.
