i like this song but get confused when he talks about the castle was a hallway and the bottle was his friend, making it sound like a homeless person, then the part where he says an old forgotten soldier the dawn will come no more, makes it sound near death, does anyone know what this song is really about?

I think it is about a homeless vet(I think Vietnam war vet) that had a family that loved him (face on the mantle)but that he couldn't get it together after he got home. He left and became homeless and this is when he dies and comes "Home from the Forest." It is a fantastic song and makes me feel very humble.

I just thought it was a song about a man who gets lost in the woods! I better go back and listen again.

Thanks, I am going to have to stop trying to fugure out these songs! I haven't been right yet. Makes a lot of sense though with the forest and the canoe trips.

Many artists write songs that can mean many different things. Even though the song reflected a time in his own life...GL, probably worked his creative magic to make the song much more meaningfull than just about his own life. I think the other member was right...it was about a vet that couldnt find his way home. Instead he found his way into a bottle and his only way to find happiness and peace was through death.

thanks for the info guys, it still is kind of sad with the "his tears fell on the sidewalk", just goes to show that Gord is a great storyteller in his songs, the pictures always come to life, especially in "The Ballad Of Yardmouth Castle"
