"I worked at a company whose name I cannot tell you, but I used an iPod made by that company to test other software made by that company. I had several Macs on my desk, and I used the iPod with each one. I liked it.
I was impressed with its clean sound. I got to know more about Gordon Lightfoot's music that I thought I would ... I came to find that he had an over-rehearsed, much too finely performed sound. Maybe I should listen to some concert footage of his."

Came across this in a discussion on iPods; seems to me I remember reading (somewhere or other) somebody else using Gord's music to judge the quality of a stereo or speakers or something similar. Anybody else recall that?

P.S. I suggested the writer try HARMONY, since it's definitely not over-rehearsed and has 2 live cuts.

well I don't know what your talking about, but I am sure that I have all of Gord's songs on my iPod! The equalizer settings make Gord sound good, but a bad tweak of them can make any song sound bad, which is probably the basis of your quoted person.

I have every GL song I own on my iPod. More than any other artist.

As for over-rehearsed, I may agree on the odd album. I think Gord tends to be too much of a perfectionist some times and occasionally, a little life leaves some of his performances.

Now, don't dump on me for this. Gord is my favourite artists and will be until "the end of all time."

there's nothing like a little corny pun just to show gord's greatness.

i'm serious too, he never leaves me with cold on the shoulder

I'm a music/home theater nut and read all the associated magazines. I forget which magazine, I think it's Sound & Vision (what the old Gord-friendly Stereo Review morphed into). One of the reviewers often uses Gord's recordings to evaluate the reproduction of the human voice as done by various speakers, receivers and audio processors that he reviews. He usually goes back to IYCRMM as being a very well engineered track, even tho its 34 years old.
If I think of the reviewer's name, I'll post it, but I don't think it matters much. I have also seen Gord's recordings mentioned in the home theater mag "Perfect Vision" a sister publication of the much revered audio mag "The Absolute Sound".

It's interesting that IFYCRM is used. In my opinion, Gord sounded the best on the albums produced by and with Lenny Waronker.

it could have been that his voice was at its peak and that Lenny was a great producer and they hired really good engineers, but I just adore his voice on the recordings from 1970-75/76. It is very rich and lush. Mmmmm.

You're right...to me the in-studio relationship
between Gord and Lenny Waronker as akin to George Martin and the Beatles. Getting those two to work together again would be awesome.
