Seems as a long time listener he is telling a tale of folks who get together outside the "normal" pattern. It is also a tale of a love dreamt of but never fulfilled. It is love that could exist for a moment or two only. And without regret the two involved remember!

"Never Too Close" seems to be typical of relationships these days. NO COMMITMINT! If it works out, good. If it doesn't work out, so what. No big thing. Like there is some magic force controling our lives. In reality we do have control of our lives for the most part but we do not take that control.
I have always liked the melody of this song. GL must have been through some relationships like the song mentions. It's too bad.

Gordon has in fact been through the heartbreak of affairs and a divorce just when his career was taking off. He now is happy with a new family. If you buy the Songbook box set, all of this is documented in the book that comes with the set
