Amazing nobody seems to have posted to the Newsgroup yesterday, are
they all scared of April Fool's Day or what??
Anyway I'll forego my highlights digest for another week as I have had a more pressing thing on my mind now I hope solved:-

Well All Right
Yes I know last week's chat or lack of it was a disaster and apologies
to all those who failed to connect with anybody
This is a complete and rather long acount of my successful search for a new room/access method. Because as far as I can tell the old method using the obviously defunct Internet Relay Chat server cjbnet is never going to be usable again. The problem is replacing it with an alternative to cater for the three types of chatter:-
1. Those who already have the mIRC client program(me) and appreciate/prefer its features
2. Those who are never going to be persuaded to get it and wish to continue using a simple browser access and don't worry when they get bumped!!
3. A few odd persons who are convinced that a MAC is the best thing since sliced bread
(Sorry anybody here so afflicted!!)
(Just what was the best thing before sliced bread I wonder any ideas???)
Anyway a number of us did succeed in chatting for a while on a "#gordonlightfootchat" channel using a different IRC server and also for a while several were able to chat in an impromptu chat room using AIM and/or AOL Instant Messenger. But this needs each person to be
individually invited in which is cumbersome at best and after I left once I found no amount of invites could get me back in so that's out.
The previous week we did try the Bravenet room as currently linked from Rik's site but not everyone could get in there (especially my dear wife which led her to get a very large disgrunt). Nor could I find anyone to tell me if it could be accessed via mIRC.
So what to try next??
I had previously tried googling but never found anything suitable that combined the required access both direct from a browser (simple URL entry) and using mIRC. So finally and in desperation I turned to the
trusty gent known as Jeeves at
http://www,ask.com
and asked him
"what is the url of a chat room in mirc"
I eventually ended up at the unlikely sounding
World's Worst Website : Chat Room at:-
http://www.worlds-worst-website.com/...hat/chat2.html

I realised it was April The First but pressed on and bingo.
Not only did it feature a working Java applet chat room (the applet
has to be downloaded first a very quick operation) was obviously
accessible from a browser URL but had lots of useful links including
a promising sounding pair of links under the applet which said:-
"For mIRC users, try either of the 2 links below. The top link will download a mIRC configuration file. This will automatically launch mIRC and configure it with the server, port and channel settings. The
second link is an IRC type URL (actually

irc://irc.dilexnet.net:6667/wwwchat)

which your Web Browser will pass to mIRC and again you will automatically be connected to the chat room.
then these two hyperlinks:-
The World's Worst Website chat room (download)
mIRC Direct Link"

I tried the direct link provided and was amazed to find myself in a chat room under mIRC without actually running mIRC from my
start-programs menu. However I was on that site's own chat room channel (wwwchat) so I tried typing /join #gordonlightfootchat and there I was in familiar surroundings. I then looked at AIM and caught both Jenney
who has mIRC and Valerie who I know wont use it and was able to get them to join me. At some point I found there was also another guest shown as "brut" (Brian) who I discovered was with admin at dilexnet
and proved extremely helpful between us we got Kimberley who I found online via AIM into the room despite her MAC.
So now we have a room accessible by all three types of chatters that
I listed above.Except for my wife's PC which for possibly the same reason that she was unable to get into the Bravenet room.I have now been able to configure her mIRC to link to the dilexnet server.
and have added a "new link" page on my web site at:-
(My existing tutorial on setting up mIRC is at:-
http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c...tingupmIRC.htm )

the new link page is at:-
http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/newlink.htm

So lets try this evening at either
1. browser entry:-
http://www.worlds-worst-website.com/...hat/chat2.html

when you get there just type in
"/join #gordonlightfootchat" and hit enter
or a direct link via dilexnet that Brian gave me
1A.
http://www.dilexnet.net/irc/webchat/...nlightfootchat

2.(the link to mirc under the applet)
which links to

irc://irc.dilexnet.net:6667/wwwchat

followed by the change of channel
(typing /join #gordonlightfootchat)
or 3. by adding the new link to your existing mIRC if you have it (as
per my tutorial linked above)
If this works out I intend to adapt the "worst site" page to fit in on
my own web site's Lightfoot section. But I need to experiment further
as I suspect that
http://www.irc://irc.dilexnet.net:66...nlightfootchat would
be a perfect replacement direct link to go straight to the correct
channel usuing mIRC from my page
Talking of channels I found a number of useful sites such as:-
http://www.newircusers.com/network.html

which revealed that:-
"You CANNOT talk to a user that is not on the same network as you. If
your friend is on the #newbies channel on EFnet, and you are on the
#newbies channel on DALnet, you cannot talk to him because he is on a
DIFFERENT network. Channels with the same names on the different
networks ARE NOT the same channels, even though they have the same
name. So, if you want to meet a friend on a particular channel, make
sure you are both on the same Network."
Which seems to make sense. Or does it??
So Ladies and gentlemen let's try this evening at 9 PM EST as usual
Fingers crossed!!!

Sorry, John, I wasn't home. My husband and I er, donated, to the local casino last night after enjoying a nice dinner out without kids and followed up with seeing the comedian Sinbad. It was supposed to be a 75 minute show but ran for two hours. Haven't laughed that hard for that long in ages. He's great, has a wonderful interaction with the audience - including a running gag with a 15 year old girl, Alyssa, at a front table about her boyfriend, Dan ("uh uh, girl, it's really 'Danny', see, but 'Danny' is a sucky name in high school, not cool"), a woman who came in late to the show, and some other woman who was ticked off with her husband because they were ALMOST late ("but you got here on time, right? So what's the problem? A shower? He took too long in the shower? What's he need to shower for? Oh you TOLD him to take a shower, so now it's HIS fault you're ALMOST late? Sorry, brother, you gonna hear about this some more tonight. Lady, breathe. Just ... let ... it ... go....)"

Anyway if I can pry one of the other of the kids off the PC next week I may actually make it.

After all the hard work I put in trying to set up a working chat room accessible by everybody it was to say the least disappointing that only one person joined Susan and I in the room last Friday. Susan claims that was because my announcement last week was too verbose and complicated, She may well be correct and if so I am sorry and will limit myself this week to the essential links:-
1.If you already have mIRC installed
configure it using my illustrated guide at: http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/newlink.htm
2. If you have not got mIRC yet
find out how at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c...tingupmIRC.htm
3 use this browser URL link to enter without bothering with mIRC at all:- http://www.worlds-worst-website.com/...hat/chat2.html
if asked accept the download of the Java applet
then wait for the Java applet to load (in the grey rectangle under the neurotic penguin)
and simply enter your name or a nickname
once in that chat room (actually you will be on a channel called #wwwchat) change to our channel by typing:-
/join #gordonlightfootchat
4. If you would like to enter using mIRC but are still reluctant to tackle the full
installation click on the link under the applet that says:-
mIRC Direct Link
5.If all the above fail try this alternative browser URL link:- http://www.dilexnet.net/irc/webchat/...nlightfootchat
enter a nickname and press the chat button
That's all that I am going to say for this week except that
this evening's chat will be at 9 PM EST.
and of course I sincerely hope a few make it in
If you are unable to get in please e-mail me with an account of your efforts.
fowlesjohn@hotmail.com
If you make it I would like to do a survey on attendees experiences of getting in so please be prepared to say which of the above methods worked for you

I 've tried to access that thing but it's like trying to get past the bouncer of a gentleman's club when you're only 18! (..and yes that was a long time ago! )

I want to chat but the program or whatever does not like me or something. I'll keep trying. Later!

Yeah, I've tried a couple/three times in the past few weeks and can't seem to access again either. Unless a simpler, more reliable, more user-friendly server can be found I guess I'll be sitting on the sidelines come Friday nights at 9...just like the lonely junior high boy standing on the sidelines by the doors to the boys/girls restrooms trying to figure out the beat and get up the nerve to ask that cute little brunette to dance.(...and yes that was a long time ago! to quote the B-stone!)

Well all Right!!
Last Friday about six staggerred into the chat room
Now I am aware that last week and the previous Friday a total of at least four failed to get in (2 posted on the Newsgroup and two on corfid) but nobody provided any details of what method they tried
On order to try to resolve this if you can't get in please e-mail me at
fowlesjohn@hotmail with as much detail as possible
Since lst Friday I have been a'googling and I think I know a bit more how Internet Relay Chat works and I have now devised a basic entry page to a chat room on a channel gordonlightfootchat linked to the IRC server dilex.net which is accessible both from your browser using a Java applet that I have uploaded to my site or via the recommended chat client mIRC
There is also a link that (providing you have already downloaded and installed mIRC) avoids the necessity of configuring mIRC altogether
so ladies and gentlemen
lets try tonight at 9pm EST at:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chat/

If I'm off work on a Friday (and that's a rarity) I'll try to be there.

Unless I have a date!

Well All Right...
But did you get in Char in fact
---------------------------------------------
Belated apologies for our non-appearance in the New chat room last week we were busy entertaining visitors from England. I had asked Kimberley to let me know how things went and she duly reported that in the short time that she was able to attend 5 other chatters arrived, and judging by their later corfid messages so did the redoubtable Char and Deb (Brink)ley
I have just completed a revamp of my web site page to make it more user friendly
I have a few more details yet to add, principally the method for changing your nick name from "guest" once in the room:-
simply type /nick then a space then your new nick
example:-
/nick gordonlightfoot
well one can always hope!!!
So once again the invitation to chat this evening at 9PM EST at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chat

My apologies for the lack of any highlights digests for the last several weeks but I have been pre-occupied with the challenge of getting the replacement chat room up and running.
However a common theme recently on both the Newsgroup and corfid has been that postings are getting rather sparse. But this will surely change very soon now as reviews and enthusiasm for Harmony takes over. Talking of harmony a rather nice verbal sparring match between the Watchman and a man of the cloth took place this last week on the topic
"what's going on" at:- http://www.corfid.com/bb/Forum1/HTML/002209.html
Highlight of the last few weeks on the Newsgroup has to be the disgusting and highly insulting language used by a troll calling himself"Paul Taylor" hiding behind the fake e-mail addy of ihatespam@nowhere.not in the thread "Harmony CD" at:- http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&...32b2b6b191b818
That's it for now. But as at least one person opined the Newsgroup has been rather flat recently, In many ways now I find corfid to be more entertaining and I personally feel that its virtues of instant review and the ability to edit one's topic and (if you started it) actually delete it plus the facility that I am trying to get Char to acqire whereby any image already on a web site may be simply linked to so that it appears in your topic make it most worthwhile. On the other hand the Newsgroup's archives contain so much worthwhile reading so getting to know both is if you have the time very rewarding. I hope my series of highlights has encouraged a few to venture into the opposite camp and intend resuming a fuller summary next week.
And now the commercial break Last friday saw a total of 8 in the room including the return of champion guesser (catman)Ron
It would have been 9 if our bartender (Ed) had tried one of the alternative links I provided and thereby got into the correct room. To quickly read a summary of the basic details and utilise one browser/Java applet method of getting in please visit:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chat
If that gives you trouble try the alternative Javascript link provided by the IRC server (dilexnet.net) http://www.dilexnet.net/irc/webchat/...nlightfootchat
As always the best and most stable way in is using mIRC either by opening the program already configured as described at:- http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
and the new link configuration at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/chatroom/newlink.htm
Or scroll down on my chat page as per the link above
to the mIRC section (which I have revised slightly) and which now includes some initial ideas on the various commands you can use in mIRC especially changing you nickname and setting/revising the topic Also there is the deceptively simple URL link that will automaticaly open and configure your (pre-installed) mIRC progra(me) just copy and paste this link:-
irc://irc.dilexnet.net:6667/gordonlightfootchat
So I hope to see more of you this evening at 9pm EST/2am BST/11am Melbourne time
