I would like for someone to tell me why gords voice seems to change from gords gold volume 1 compared to volume 2 in the second volume its almost as if his voice blends in with the music so you cant understand what he is sayin without the words but the first gords gold his voice overpowers the instruments. its just something i've always wondered about

one was 1975 and the other was 1987. 12 more years of cigarettes and alcohol - well not alcohol, but it's just the aging process. I think GG vol 2 has a really instrumental backing, but it his voice is too nasal for some songs. East of Midnight also has that GG vol 2 voice. I'm not too big on the voice on the rerecorded songs on GG vol1 for some reason. I prefer the originals for some reason. But the voice came back on summertime dream. GG vol 2 was recorded in like a live sttings, if i'm correct. There weren't any overdubs I think as well.

I know exactly what you mean. I saw Gord in concert on CPTV, and it's not just his voice that has changed, Gosh, at first I thought it was someone covering his songs. I had to take a closer look. I remember in the seventies, he was soooo beautiful. Don't get me wrong, I would still go see him in a heartbeat, it's just that now he looks like my Dad. Does anyone know if he drank as much as he sang about it?

Apparently he became sober in 1982, I heard him say in an interview. But he does mention his wine ect in salute, wfy and appt. That wouldn't effect the voice as much as smoking which as far as i know still does?

joveski -- You don't like his voice on Gord's Gold I? That's always been one of my favorite albums! Combine that voice (which, for me, has launched 1,000 fantasies)with the pictures on GGI of Gord, and it's almost too much to handle!!

Brenda - no, i didn't say i don't like it. I meant that his voice sounds better on the orginal versions of the re-recorded songs. esp. on wherefor & why and the stuff from the first UA album.

I completely understand the questions and confusion concerning the sound quality of GG I and GG II. I have yet to figure it out myself. I do not blame Gord's voice for the bad sound quality of GG II but rather, the recording quality as a whole. GG I is crisp, clear, with beautiful symphonic strings as tasteful back-up. The acoustic guitars are perfect as is the total mix. To me, Lightfoot's voice has never sounded better. His highs, his lows, his depth, the smoothness. Wow!!! Maybe the second attempt is too electric, with less strings, and it seems, less voice volume and depth. The mix is muffled and garbled. Still a great record, but maybe hastily produced.
