Last night, while channel flippin',I happened across a late night show called (hope I get the name right) "Unexplained Mysteries" (not to be confused with "Unsolved M.")
The show was about "water vortex's" such as the Bermuda Triangle and how they seemingly cause ships' radars & compases to "conk out" and cause disaster. One of the ships (and they had a 30 year old clip of it) was the Edmund Fitzgerald!
Although breif and not shedding to much light on the accident,it was said there was a "great lakes vortex" where the ship was sailing while in the storm. An expert stated that both of Fitz's radars stopped working (and possibly the compass) and within a minute the boat went under once back up and then sank permanently.
Had I not been channel surfing I might have missed it.

Which reminds me,and I'm sure you know, the 30th anniversary of this event is this November.
