With or Without Mustache?

I look at pictures of Gordon's albums through the years and sometimes wonder if he looks better with or without a mustache. I have to say he looks better with a mustache.

Oh Yea!! And a beard !! In his day Gord was strikingly handsome and had sculpted definition in his features that actually made him beautiful. You know how some just have such perfect features, they are truly beautiful to look at. If I had seen a picture of him and never knew who he was I still would have thought the same thing. I would give anything to see pics of him as a baby and a toddler - he was probably breathtaking. He is still a good looking man ( a bit thin ) and carries himself as if 15 years younger.

The beard was the best. But the mustache has kinda been like his trademark thru the Seventies. I think he looks great all cleaned up and all, but the boy needs that Mustache back...no foolin'

Regarding Gord's moustache... he has in fact grown it back. He did it early last year as was evident on the Much More Music show he did in July 99. When he shaved it off a few years ago I was just floored that it was even him. I wasn't around years ago when he was performing sans moustache and so it was an adjustment! LOL... Kinda like Col.Sanders getting rid of his goatee( well if he was still around lol)

As a rule, I do not like facial hair. But the beard Gord sported in the seventies along with that crop of curly hair, I found very attractive. Although over the years he's lost the rugged, Paul Bunyon look, I still think he's an attractive man, with or without the mustache.

The picture on the cover of the Sundown album/disc is a great one of Gord with the "rugged" look with the curls, mustache and beard. I agree, now that he is so thin, he really needs the 'stache to fill out his face a little.

This is an interesting topic. For the most part, I would say the mustache definitely enhances Gord's already attractive features and I prefer him with it. I definitely think that he looks much better now with it. I was so glad to see that he grew it back.
I also found his rugged mustache and beard look from the seventies a most sexy one.
There is one instance Ive seen him where I think he's even better looking without any facial hair. There is a video of him from the late sixties or very early seventies where he performs on the Johnny Cash show.I tell you, its not exaggeration to say that Gordon looked exquisite on that show. He's clean shaven, his skin is flawless, his hair looked like a downy blond halo, his lips were dark and sensuously bow shaped and he wore a confident, serious expression as he sang. So as I said, for the most part I prefer the mustache through the years, I'd have to say that the look he had on that show was probably my favorite of all the ones I've seen of him.
Its funny, this reminds me of a thread that I started in the newsgroup a few years back. Which Gord look to you prefer?
I always found it interesting that an artist such as Gord, who always seemed to concentrate on the music and leave the theatrics and costumes to other performers, still managed to be almost chameleon like in the way his appearence would alter so dramatically over the years

I think a cool picture of Gordon is on page 15 of the "Songbook" box-set. He looks so mod. I also like the way he looks on "Sundown" "Old Dan's Records" and "Endless Wire" album covers.

I remember Gord when he was coming off the booze looking like death warmed over.Sunken eyes and hollow heart.Moustache or not.I like him healthy and singing from his soul.Although I do admit to missing a heartbeat or two gazing at the pics of him in the early days when he looked like a logger just returned from the woods with his sleeves rolled up on his shirts and his muscles smiling at me:}Hey I am human.

Yes, I have to agree that the moustache was good in it's day. So was the beard. But I feel that both of them are practically dated!!!

The beard which he had shaved off in 1976 has been a part of the seventies, and I feel that if he had grown in back, he would look like a "Skinny Santa Claus", The moustache, however which was part of the 1980's, was also cute during the 1980's, but when he had shaved it off in 1990, I had trouble, adjusting to it. After a while, a found that he was better of remaining clean shaven. That 'stache which he grew back doesn't do much justice to his face anymore. Instead of that reddish brown bush which people had grown to love, there is a "white lopsided mouse" which seems to be a fluff of cotton on one side, and a little string on the other. I had also read that the clean-shaven Gord looks like a young Clint Eastwood which I find to be handsomely sexy. He should have stuck with that "Eastwood" look, but instead, he had to ruin it by growing a white patch of hair under his nose, making him look 30 years older.

One think that I liked about him losing his 'stache in the 1990's was that it made him look younger, and even smoother. When he last had it in the 80's, he looked like Rock Hudson in his battle with aids. Very old very fraille. Now with a trim fit excercised body, and a clean cut face or a face that was once clean cut, he looks no more than 60. With the 'stache, he looks like he's 85 or even 90!!! Almost like a senior citizen in a retirement centre!!!

No offence guys and ladies, but if you want to see a nice looking handsome Lightfoot in the 2000's, that face, nor the Clint Eastwood looking face no longer exists. You instead have to live with an old and decrepit "grandpappy face".

I think DB was just being critical of Gordon. Many people praise the singer too much, and there has to be a form of balance. Gordon Lightfoot is an excellent sensational superstar, but he too has faults. DB was just trying to make a bunch of points, although he was a bit over the edge with obnoxiousness. He tryes to cnvince poeple that Gorden is not god and that he isn't perfect. DB makes some good points too when he compares the styles of Shea and Clements in the topic of Terry Clements.

perfectly aware that he is a man and not a

Telling a miserable critical fan, who seems to be the type who would hurt Gordon Lightfoot or his other fans and band may not make the problem any better. There are probbly bound tobe other fans or people out there who would annouy or give Gordon the raspberry, or comment on his flaws soooner or later. I believe that some hardcore fans who give him the thumbs up are people who are obsessed with him and they are obsessive. I am afraid that this "DB" jerk is not one of these poeple. As GL sang in is APPT song "once upon a time my life would be obssessed" besides even newspaper critcis or newspaper reporters give Gordon Lightfoot trashy reviews sometimes. You cannot expect a reporter to trash a critic for saying negitive things about Gordon, and you can't fire a news repporter for doing the same thing. I guess this "DB" jerk is not the #1 fan after all. I think that he ranks in the top ten obnoxius fans. And a casual fan too.

Jeeze DB, now tell us what you REALLY think! Gordon still looks(& sounds) pretty good to me. Heck, he was born on 11-17-38 making him 62 this Birthday...none of us are getting any younger you know! In looking back at all of Gordon's changes over the years, I think my favorite image of him was captured on the "Endless Wire" album. THAT is Gordon Lightfoot to me. I have that pic by my computer and it inspires me.

I don't know what that DB guy thinks now, I think that he is probably doing othre thingsand probbly doessnt care. One of the downsides abuot Gord's aging that that jerk didnot point out was the fact that his voice is getting weaker. Tom, I remmber that you have said that he still sounds good for a guy born in 11-17-38, but I think in my opinion that his voice was the richest in both the Lightfoot and The Way I Feel album. He can really hit the high "ooh" notes in Steel Rail Blues and Song For A Winter's Night. Today his range is limited. He cannot raise it in songs like Rainy Day Poeple or Bewtiful like he did on those old records. This is evidenced in Gordon Lightfoot Live Tv special. On a positive effect, he looks liek he is in very good shape, and he has even outlived Elvis Presley, and stood the test of time. Mustache or no mustache, he will always be young at heart!!!

At the risk of belaboring the point, I have just one more deep thought to add. Everyone is analyzing GL's age, voice, physique, and seem to have forgotten that 30 years have gone by for all of us. Oh though we hate to admit it, all of our looks, voices, etc. have changed (except mine).

But the real heart of the issue, the core of the psyche and controversy is this:
All of the men on this site are extremely jealous of GL, the fact that he's 62 and all of the women still adore him!!

Welcome to the Church of Lightfoot!! Don't worry guys, if you look at it that way, there's still hope for you when you reach 62!!
