Well, I'm at school today and the music store is just off campus...I have only enough money to get one Lightfoot album. My other 3 albums I have I listened WAYY too much to and I think that I need a change FAST LOL. Anyway, unfortunately I am going to have to order Don Quixote and Cold on the Shoulder, but I think that the store contained some of his albums anyway like:
If You Could Read My Mind
Shadows
Salute
East of Midnight
some greatest hits collection
Summertime Dream (already have)
Sundown (already have)
Old Dan's Records (already have)
I don't want to get Salute or East of Midnight (not yet, anyway), and I'm not the biggest fan of greatest hits collections (I prefer buying individual albums). Right now, I'm torn between Shadows and IYCRMM. For some reason though I am leaning toward Shadows although I do make it a future plan to look into IYCRMM. It's just that at this moment I like the sound clips of Shadows better, but it doesn't mean I won't like IYCRMM less.
So...go for Shadows or IYCRMM first? (Disclaimer: I don't care which one has more "hits." That is not my priority)
However, if the store has Dream Street Rose, I might get THAT one over both of those 2 for the time being.

I like Shadows better than IYCRMM but, I also like the greatest hits selections they have songs from various years not only the most commercials sucesses.
Or you might want to save your money for the new one coming out in May.

Thanks Brink...well, I kind of consider myself a collector when I start liking an artist's work, I start wanting to have their whole collection, so even if I did get Shadows I still might want to get the one coming in May, you know what I mean?
Anyway, I am trying to get the albums in which his voice still has that "sound" to it before it starts to change, that's why.

In my opinion, SHADOWS has eight truly great tracks, DREAM STREET has six, and IYCRMM has four. So based on that...

Hi Restless...well, it turns out the store DID have DSR. I got that one today, but it was BEFORE you replied to me with this info! I like a lot of it but I gotta listen to it again to formulate a better opinion. It seems promising though!
But Shadows is next, I promise LOL

Great Shazia How we all envy you who has so much great music yet to be savoured
You said you wanted him before his voice changed. In my book that is more than enough justification to immediately acquire the first five "United Artists" albums.
That way you start with the first 5 of his 19 original albums (soon to be 20 of course)
I used to think this was best done by buying the handsome Canadian-issue black three CD box set "Original Lightfoot"
of which there seems to be an inexhaustable supply being offerred on ebay currently item:- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...3&category=307
has a "buy it now" fixed price of only US$24.93 plus $5.99 shipping
Alternatively on sale at Amazon is the equivalent US 2-CD "United Artists collection" set
which covers just the first 4 U.A.albums
you can then add Eitherthe basic GL Live CD
This fabulous album was the only official (non-bootleg) live recording until the 2000 Reno concert for a PBS special and its
subsequent issue as a video in both VHS and DVD formats another "must-have" item
Or the German Bear Family issue of the same Sunday Concert but with 5 Bonus tracks added
I have just received that CD as a birthday present:-
this is a scan of the back cover so you can readily see the track listing
If you shop around you can also on the Bear family label get the first four albums as a pair of cds each containing two complete albums:-
The two "Plus" CDs also sport very worthwhile booklets indeed the Sunday Concert plus booklet includes all the text and photos that were a feature of the original gatefold LP sleeve.
There is a German Bear Family home page in English at:- http://www.bear-family.de/index_english.htm
click on artist listing "L" all 3 cds are listed with track lists and reviews
Note rather quaintly the English and German reviews are all in a single paragraph
Also note that the two different (Nashville/New York) versions of the very first of Gord's songs that I myself ever heard "Spin Spin" are included as "bonuses"
I have taken some trouble to research this response because this matter has been regularly cropping up recently due to a number of posters building up their collections and I feel very strongly that these 5 albums which were such a solid foundation for the success that followed with IYCRMM in 1971 are a must to really appreciate all that Gordon has to offer
In addition Shazia I think you were earlier advised to get the simply magnificant box set "songbook" which is so much more than a "greatest hits" package, especially the brilliant booklet
This has some 72 remastered tracks from previously issued albums plus a great collection of 16 new tracks many of which are
so good that it is amazing to realise that they were outtakes from earlier albums.
I hope this gives you a little food for thought

whoa whoa WHOA JohnFowles you did a TREMENDOUS job researching this. OMG you did such a great job helping me out that it isn't even funny. You seem like a wizard on Lightfoot. Unfortunately I am a little confused on all this stuff but at the same time I find it informative. I'm going to email this topic to me so that I can keep it on hand.
thank you!

By the way, Shazia, Songbook doesn't come with all those autographs, just in case you were wondering.
I agree with John, though. You should start out with his United Artist material, then buy the Warner Brothers/Reprise stuff. If you are anything like the rest of us, you'll have all of them and then some within a year.

Doug: She said somewhere up in this string that she ended up getting Dream Street Rose but promised to do Shadows next. I think we're placing bets on Shazia's 4th or 5th by now!

East Of Midnight is an awesome album, I used to listen to that even more after I got Songbook. It sat in my collection for almost 2 years because of the adult contemporary sound. Then I took a second listen and its probably one of my favorite of GL's albums, much more then Shadows.

you took a speed reading course? LOL
I'm irrevocable as far as reading fast enough is concerned. I'm a slow reader by nature, it's just the way I am and always was!
