Tom posted a url of Elvis singing Early Morning Rain just a couple of months before he died.(small talk)
If Elvis had lived what other songs of Gord's do you think he could have performed and done justice to.?

I'm thinkin' of the following:
1. The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
2. If You Could Read My Mind
3. All The Lovely Ladies
4. Cold On The Shoulder
5. The Circle Is Small
6. Bend In The Water
7. Sweet Guinivere
8. Somewhere USA
9. High and Dry
10. Beautiful
Just a few that came to mind. Good topic C. I can actually hear The King doing these songs in my mind as I type.

Char,
Thanks for the topic. I agree with some of classicmixdj's picks, however, I don't think anyone could justice to the "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" except the Painter. I would have loved to hear EP sing Gordon's "If You Could Read My Mind" "Circle Is Small" "Somewhere USA" or "She's Not The Same".
Elvis did a nice studio version of "Early Morning Rain" on March 15, 1971 included on the "Elvis Now" album. At the same session he cut Gord's "(Thats What You Get)For Lovin' Me" made available on the "Fool" album. According to Ernst Jorgensen's book ELVIS PRESLEY:A LIFE IN MUSIC in March of 1972 Elvis was "champing to record Gordon Lightfoot's 'The Last Time I Saw Her Face'" around the time of his marriage breakup. He wasn't able to record it due to royalty issues. He cut another version of "Early Morning Rain" on January 14, 1973 that was used in the American broadcast of the ELVIS:ALOHA FROM HAWAII TV-Special on April 4, 1973. He did not cut the song "live" during the show, but recorded it after the live transmition was over & the crowd had left the H.I.C. Arena in Honolulu. It was available on the "Mahalo From Elvis" album. You can also see it on the new DVD version of that Special. Then again for his final CBS-TV Special in 1977, "Early Morning Rain" was a last minute inclusion into the final hour-long Special. I remember it got alot of radio airplay around the Detroit area. You can access a video stream of the 1977 "Early Morning Rain" version at the following link:
www.elvisboard.de
Then find & click "Elvis Multimedia" and then "Elvis Real Video & Real Audio" and find "CBS 'Elvis in Concert' Outtakes" where after you are connected, you can scroll down to "Early Morning Rain" directly.

Good topic, Char,
My favorite Elvis song is Kentucky Rain, so in that same respect, I think he could have done justice to either Cherokee Bend or 10 Degrees and Colder. Come to think of it . . . I'd like to hear Gord give a shot at Kentucky Rain. Hmmm?!?!?!

Mary Ann,
I have never been able to compare Elvis and Gordon but I think it would be interesting to hear Gordon do "Kentucky Rain."
It is a beautiful song and one that Gordon would beable to relate to.

Supaiblue,
Elvis songs I'd like to hear Gordon sing:
"Always On My Mind"
"Anything Thats Part Of You"
"Can't Help Falling In Love" (Bob Dylan did a version)
"Funny How Time Slips Away"
"Gentle On My Mind"
"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"
"Sand Castles"
"The Last Farewell"
"Why Me Lord"(More like Kris Kristofferson than Elvis' version)

"...If YoU fEeL iT yOu BeTtEr BeLiEvE iT, yOu'Re GoNnA sEe It, YoU nEeD tO kNoW/iT iS rIsInG lIkE a FeAtHeR, dIpPiNg & DaNcInG fRoM bElOw/ThErE's A nEw WaVe ThAt Is BrEaKiNg In ThE wAkE oF a PaSsInG sHiP/eVeRy NaTiOn'S gOnNa Be ShAkEn, PuT iT tOgEtHeR, dOn'T lEt It SlIp..."
