That would be interesting to hear Gord sing, though, with a folky twinge.

Stevo,by the way,Harry Chapin who did,"Cat's In The Cradle",was taken in a car crash on Thursday:July 16th,1981. Age 39.

This fall (Sept./Oct.) marks the 30th anniversary of the song... and the week of Dec. 21st will be the anniversary of it's one week stay at #1.

The song was remade in 1993 by 2 hit rock group Ugly Kid Joe. They did a fair job of it and got to #6. Despite how old the song is,it's theme is a timeless one and something between some parents and kids that still goes on./ ...end.

And most of these guys knew and/or worked with each other (not sure about Cat Stevens, though.) Gord did at least one hunger benefit with Harry Chapin, and knew Jim and his wife Ingrid. Those singer-songwriters are all superb storytellers.

Harry was my husband's favorite - we were to see him in concert at the local community college in August of the year he died. Somewhere or other we still have the poster from that never held concert framed for hanging (it was in the upstairs hallway for a while.)

Still makes me sad to think what wonderful songs we'll never hear because of losing Jim and Harry too soon.

I guess I can answer my own question...

Q: DID CAT STEVENS SING/WRITE "CAT'S IN THE CRADLE?":
No. "Cat's In The Cradle" was written and recorded by Harry Chapin. This is a VERY common misconception. Recently there have been a number of Cat's In The Cradle MP3 files on file sharing services that claim to be either Cat Stevens (Bio), or Harry Chapin and Cat Stevens. They are not, it's just Harry. Or in some cases some other artist who recorded the song. Cat not only didn't write the song but never performed it. Not live, not in the studio, and not even privately.

Hello Steve!

Johnny Cash does a version of it too. You'll find it on the "Boom Chica Boom" album and "The Mercury Years" album. It's quite good.

Harry's brother, Tom Chapin, is terrific also. I think he's mainly been doing children's music a la Raffi for some time, but I have an old record of his I really enjoy.

I think people confuse "Cat's In The Cradle" with Cat Stevens's "Oh,Very Young". Either that or "Wild World"

In some minor ways,Cat & Harry (sounds like a 70s buddy-cop film! ) sing in the same manner. I can't really describe the pitch except to say it runs between a somewhat deep voice to a near Arlo Guthrie kind of singing. Anyone know what I mean? I hope so,'cause I almost don't get it!

Speaking of the former Cat Stevens, now Yusuf Islam, he's in the news this morning:

And you can check Jim Croce's recordings at www.jimcroce.com (I think that's the website - if not, Google Jim Croce+ discography.)

I am a huge Croce fan and I also doubt he ever recorded "Cat's in the Cradle."

However, if anyone knows where I can get a full version of Jim and Ingrid singing SFAWN, that would be fantastic. The first few lines that were heard on the Croce DVD was a real tease.
