Found this on the Blockbuster internet site (note the last line <g> ):
Hail, Hero! stars Michael Douglas in his screen debut as long-haired college student Carl Dixon. Reversing the usual procedure in late-1960s films, Dixon decides to quit school and enlist in the Army, even though he's already run afoul of the law as a Vietnam protestor. It is our hero's intention to use love, rather than bullets, to combat the Viet Cong. Needless to say, his idealism is no match for the harsher realities of war, but this doesn't stop him from endlessly spouting the sort of agit-prop rhetoric so beloved of filmmakers of the era. In addition to Michael Douglas, co-star Peter Strauss likewise makes his first film appearance in Hail, Hero! Dated in the extreme, the film is saved by the musical score by Gordon Lightfoot. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Here's the link toWayne Francis' piece on the movie and soundtrack:

I agree,Gord's music really fit in well with that movie. As I may have said before,I saw the movie nearly 3 years ago on late night TV. Had I known it was Mr. Douglases 1st movie,I'd have taped it. I wasn't into Gord when I saw it but now I wish I had been. I could've taped the song from the movie. I just wish this was on Video or DVD! Been me,Later!

You can also find it on ebay sometimes, usually fairly cheap ($7.00 or less).

Did Gord write more than one song for this movie? If he did, what are they?

Gordon once stated that,"Sit Down Young Stranger" was once going to be used for the movie. It was not indicated wheather the song was in fact written for it or wheather Gord wrote it and the studio wanted it for the movie. The song and film follow a similar plot line so it would have been great to hear it when I saw the movie. Been me,Later!

On a different GL website simply called "LIGHTFOOT",I discoverd that in fact SDYS was indeed written for this movie but I was also surprisd to see that Don Quixote was written for it as well. Both songs were (stupidly) passed on. By the wa y,speaking of movies..."Harry Tracy" has come out on DVD! Apparently back in May! I'm finding that! If you want to see this website,I got to it by typing in,Lightfoot alphabetical song list" and it goes to that and from there you can hit the HOME icon. It's been me,later! (I can't wait to see that Pulitzer Prize winning film! )
