Kim, the Bobby Sands, I know was a member of the IRA who died in Prison in Northern Ireland in 1981 after a 66 day hunger strike,he was 27 years of age at the time.
He was a noted poet, but it is unlikely he would have written Back Home in Derry before Gordon wrote "the wreck" in 1975.
Back Home in Derry is about Irish Convicts being transported to Australia in 1803.
They were bound for Botany Bay which is an inlet just south of Sydney Harbour. But later in the song they are in Van Diemen's Land which is now Tasmania, this is where the most hardened convicts were sent to Port Arthur.

I have a book..."The Fatal Shore", by Robert Hughes that I read nearly 15 years ago. Its sub-title is 'The epic of Australia's founding'. It was fascinating to me when I read it then and I think I'll pull it out and read it again. Very interesting account of the birth of a nation...Australia...from England's jail to a flourishing nation. Something we Americans don't get in our history classes.

Sheila Ann, the Fatal Shore is a great book and an Australian Classic. Its a pity that North American History teachers don't see fit to worry very much about the rest of the world ( maybe apart from Europe ), neither does Hollywood... lol.
The Irish have had a great influence on the development of Australia ( not only the bushrangers ), as they have had with North America.

Canadian history and Geography always includes Australia! My daughter Lisa did an extensive project on Australia in Grade 7. The Canadian kids learn about many countries over the course of their schooling and I always enjoy it when she brings her text books home. Seeing as I forgot so much of what I learned way beack in the day it's a nice refresher course!

I'm so pleased to read this Char.
For we are brothers, shoulder to shoulder, arm in arm, from the Western Front, to Kabul we will always stand by each other. ( unless we are talking about international wheat sales )
Remember the old school wall atlas, we were the two big red bits.. lol.
