I remember being told about 2 years ago (in this forum) that Drink Yer Glasses Empty was written during the Gulf War.

Can anyone shed any more light on this song? In particular, what is the meaning and significance of the line "there's one less cause in the world to be leavin' for"?

I'd like to hear peoples' speculations as well as information that is actually known about the lyrics.

I always thought that Gord was refering to the fact that youth has to do the real fighting in any war. When he sings about "back in '39 when I was one year old",
'39 was when Hitler was rising to the pinnacle of his power, the world had turned so cold because of it. Of course, at 1, Gord had no idea of who Hitler was or what war was, but he and "it" co-existed.
I always took "drink yer glasses empty" as a
military commander telling his very youthful charges that it's time to go out and fight, dont forget what we taught you, etc. Almost like he has to tell "kids" to finish their milk, then go out and fight.
I kind of thought Gord saw all the things in the world that might be worth fighting for as one big list of "bad" things...and each war crosses another bad thing off the list.
Hitler was a bad thing in WWII, maybe Gord would think that Saddam is a bad thing to cross off now. That's how I see the phrase "one less cause in the world to be fighting for". I doubt any of us will live long enough to see the entire list crossed off.....

Rob, Good analogy and I think right on target. You really do think about these songs a lot... that's good. Thanks, it sure helped me with a song I often wondered about. I knew it was something to this effect with the Commander, etc, but, you very succinctly put it together. Bravo! Could you see the list if we all put down what we think are "bad things" in the world.
