I am a new person here, and this looks like a friendly, fun place to chat and discuss one of my all time favourite musicians! How can one choose a favourite song from the thousands of near perfect ones so many have heard?

But if I were to narrow it down to one, The Ballad of The Edmund Fitz. would definately be it. I remember that night, that storm, and hearing about The Fitz sinking. That song still sends chills down my spine.

Hi Canadienne,

I must admit that when I first heard this song (waaay back when I was very young), I wasn't very fond of it. It was a song that didn't had that instant appeal to me as songs like "Bitter Green" or "Summertime Dream".

But my appreciation for the "Wreck" grew as I learned more about the context of the song. Living here in Austria, I did not know about this tragedy before I listened to Gordon Lightfoot's song.

Ever since, I've read a lot of articles, critics, fan postings and I have come to like this song more and more.

I can only imagine what it must be like to listen to this song, depicting the tragedy in perfect detail, when you have been a witness of the actual tragedy.

From all of the comments I've read so far, this song has managed to define Ccc (Canada's common conscience )

And on a sidenote, I think Gordon Lightfoot and the Band perform this song even better live than the versions on record.

Thank you, Florian! Yes, Gord is definately a national treasure!'Railroad Trilogy' is also a wonderful tribute to Canadian history. Thank you for the nice compliment to my homeland! I am a Canadienne errant, now living in Minnesota, and that story, and Gordon's true ballad honouring the 29 men who died, and forever preserving in haunting song that awful night, is very cathartic, and invaluable to local, and national remembrance of those men, and all the men who have lost their lives on Gitchigumi. I have been on the lake in a canoe, solo, when she decides to change moods. I get off the lake - FAST!!! My father likes to kayak on the big breakers! The power of that inland sea is mind boggling. She has the highest of respect of those who know her.

Charlene, Mais malheuresement, je suis une Canadienne errant, qui parle un petit peu de Francais. My heritage is Canadian-Francais, but I live in Minnesota now, in the Twin Cities. I am orginally from North Vancouver, BC.(I am a half-breed, Canadienne & Anglais )I am really glad I found this site, AND other 'nucks to chat with! I would LOVE to see Gord in person, especially back in the old country! But my finances won't permit such adventures at the moment.

Thank you for the warm welcome and invitation, though! I have been reading all the song lyrics on this site. What a catalogue you have! It is really enjoyable-I can't get enough of Gord's prose! No other songwriter can touch him with a six foot canoe paddle!
